My husband and I used to take turns reading aloud from this book every year we went on week long canoe camping voyageur trips in the heart of the Adirondack region of upstate NY....more

Have you ever stared at an empty cellar hole hidden deep in the forest and wondered whose lives began and ended there? What if you owned the land in question and just had to find out what happened there? This author felt this way and was successful in uncovering even the smallest facts from actual historical records from the 1790s to 1850s. Steeped in facts as researched by Doris Townshend for decades (from Wales to Rhode Island and CT, including recent archeological digs on the site.)
The authors highly original way of enabling her main character (from present day) to travel back in time to become the main character (girl from 1800s) is captivating. Inspiring read that makes me want to research more local history....more
