The title is a biSolid and compassionate, this book has a tone that I think would read well to both people dealing with ADHD and to their loved ones. The title is a bit misleading- there really is not a ton of new or cutting edge treatment information, unless the balance work turns out to be the answer they hope it might be down the road. It's still a good place to come for consolidated information and a great place to learn how to be a loving, kind, helpful presence to your child, yourself or your partner....more

It's an interesting concept to organize recipesAll the recipes I tried were good, the chamomile orange blondies made from chickpeas were outstanding. It's an interesting concept to organize recipes around needs such as lowering cholesterol or calming anxiety, but ultimately it makes this a less useful tool, since certain foods are good for many things, and if you're just trying to get ideas for what to make for dinner, this isn't a handy format. ...more

ThDr. Neal Barnard is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, which is apparently given to all second year med students in the US. This may be why this book is so well organized and easy to read. It's also interesting because he is promoting a vegan diet and I'm wondering if this will become mainstream advice in a few years. He doesn't actually say to go vegan, but his answers to each hormonal problem he discusses are based on vegan diets. It doesn't make any sense, but for some reason being told to avoid dairy to help specific problems, and that those problems will also be helped by avoiding animal protein and eating a lot of vegetables is easier for me to get interested in than being told to go vegan, so his word-smithery works for me. ...more

The fact that her biggest I loved the retelling of Dr Low Dog's life - from high school droup out, to herbalist to black belt, single mom and doctor. The fact that her biggest step forward came from a Native American discipline of sitting alone for 3 days in the desert with no food or water, is completely fascinating. As a seaker of self knowledge, her story shows she's the real deal. I almost gave this three stars though, because although book has good information, it was not that interesting to me. For someone who has not had the opportunity or interest before now to read up on herbs, the value of nature, massage, good food and healthy relationships this would be a great place to start. Her abvice is a nice combination of cutting-edge and sensible and her book is easy to read....more

Of use to me is the observation that what makes the Mediterranean diet so healthful are the colorful veggies and fruits, the olive oil and yes the red wine. Dr. Sears pulls out all grain carbs- claiming that although they are found in Mediterranean countries, they are not what helps people. So,in a nutshell, every plate would ideally be 1/3 protein to 2/3 veg, with some olive oil added. This is not a very sustainable plan for most people and goes against a lot of current thinking about limiting animal protein. Vegeterians would need to make substitutions that have carbs and it would through off his whole perfectly balanced plate. My goal is to eat healthfully, to feel that I eat respectful of our resources, and to enjoy life-including a variety of food. If I had diabetes, this book might fit me better because I would truly be managing unstable blood sugar levels, but otherwise I think it is possible to achieve my goals with beans and grains in the picture....more

First was her section on upgrading food choices. It's such a positive non-judgmental way to encourage eating better quality foods . Second is the section on the top foods to fight cancer in general and then researched-based top foods for specific cancers. She even suggests quantities for if you have cancer or if you are just trying to avoid cancer. Her recipes look intriguing and possibly a gold mine for anyone undergoing chemo or who doesn't have a source for recipes that include these beneficial foods . The good information makes this a very valuable read....more

The title seems aThis book is a brick, but it is broken down by categories of concern such as infectious diseases, various cancers, diabetes, etc.... The title seems a bit fear mongering, and also unrealistic. How Not to Die Of doesn't sound as compelling or grammatically correct, but would reflect the more proactive and positive tone of his work. It's a positive read. For my health concerns I got to read about how mushrooms and broccoli sprouts kill what I don't want dead, and, even better, this news comes from reputable journals and well designed studies. This books is definitely worth a look for anyone with better health on their mind....more

Does Gwyneth Paltrow really cook as often as this imMostly straightforward recipes, large photos, although some of the pics themselves are a bit odd. Does Gwyneth Paltrow really cook as often as this implies? While very healthful, Italian chicken salad with grilled asparagus or garden salad with aquafaba ranch dressing are not exactly as "packable" and "quick" as Gwyneth touts. More aspirational then perhaps practical....more

I liked the Mediterranean tuna salad, and the baked garlic shrimp was delicious. Tonight I'm trying the quinoa and kale stuffed sweet potatoes and the garlic thyme mushrooms, kind of like a turkey-less Thanksgiving. If the men in my life like the sweet potatoes, I will change this to 5 stars for a major vegetarian win! Otherwise, this is still a pretty and fresh cookbook....more

My rating is a bit low, because I don't think the tone of the book is helpful to those picking it up because of the title. The set up is not unique: intro and scientific explanation for why this food plan is vital, followed by recipes. One interesting bit of formatting is the way the 100 facts for why one should avoid processed foods are sprinkled in boxes through the text. Basically, we are being poisoned. That is what I got from this book. The first half of the book is information dense, but overloads explanations and makes it not helpful as a checklist. I would have preferred a book that clearly, easily highlighted the positive steps I could take followed by what to avoid so that I could feel up for some positive changes instead of fearful and overwhelmed....more
Very attractive women in expensive yoga gear are a pretty common sight that might impress but could repel anyone curious about giving yoga a try. JesVery attractive women in expensive yoga gear are a pretty common sight that might impress but could repel anyone curious about giving yoga a try. Jessamyn Stanley's brave and stunning photographs clearly send the message that yoga is about something else. The pictures of her fascinate me. Because she is so big, the athleticism of her inverted poses is riveting. Her personal story is easy to relate with. She's direct. She swears. She answers good beginner questions. Most useful to me was her explanation of the eight limbed path. I really liked how she tied her life lessons to the spiritual discipline of yoga-especially truthfulness. My one criticism is a serious one. In her tutorial of poses, she includes a couple that I think could get someone seriously hurt: headstand, bow pose and splits don't belong in this collection. ...more

I new nothing about her, except she was Alec Baldwin's much younger wife. I must say, she seems very legit. I liked how she came across, I like that she thinks it's important to have an attitude approach to life. It's cool that she makes the mind body connection to yoga. As with most of these kind of books, I'm not sure how much change will sink into me, but I am glad of the time I spent here and liked the yoga routines I tried....more
