I will say, howeveWHAT. A. BOOK.

I will say, however, that I had expected to really struggle with the writing, and that I instead found myself having an easy time of it. I also would like to point out I wasn't a huge fan of The Night Circus, and still adored this, so if TNC wasn't your thing, please don't let that put you off of trying The Starless Sea!...more

This was my very first read of Little Women (at least I think so. After some thinking I may have read it as a kid, but all I remember from it is the hideous red cover from the library and that it started off really boring, which matches my thoughts now! So who knows?! The more I think of it, the more I think I did indeed read Little Women (in Dutch) then!), and I was scared I'd dislike it due to the hype that exists even 152 years later, especially when a new movie adaptation comes out (which I cannot wait to see!). Luckily for me, and a lot of my friends, I really enjoyed it!
It took quite some time for me to get into. I wasn't bored, but it wasn't until Part 2 that I got properly invested. Perhaps that was this book's downfall, because that investment is what had me disappointed at the end. The ending wraps it all up very nicely, but just not in the way I had hoped. It really ruined the final 1,5hours for me, where I lost real interest. Such a shame!
Jo is my favorite by far (and would be a transman/enby in modern times just saying) and Meg my least favorite. Meg really got on my nerves all the time. But all in all I loved all characters (got a major soft spot for Laurie!), I just disliked the ending. The fact that such a book as wholesome as this (everyone is good, there is no 'villain') is something I liked is a surprise in itself, so I suppose it makes sense I found faults in it.
Will probably reread in physical one day! (and see if I can find that red cover again to make sure!)...more

Wow. I absolutely loved this! I could have read this in 4 days, 4 sittings, if I hadn't had appointments to go to, taking up time. The characters are all so real and multidimensional and I truly cared about certain storylines. The small lesbian side plot was definitely one of my favorites! If you missed that, you may have gotten a translation in which they edited that out.
I cannot wait to get myself a physical copy, because that's how I want to reread it and I will reread it one day.
Also very excited now for The Three Musketeers!...more
