I LOVED this book. It was so clever, and funny. Also sad and depressing. It hits on a lot of topics including grief, depression, pharmaceuticals, friendship, relationships and naps ... long, long, naps. I know this isn't a book for everybody, but it was 100% a book for me.
It reminded me of Chuck Palahniuk (when he was still good) and Bret Easton Ellis, but a more feminine version. The cynicism was more manageable.
I was completely blown away and now wish I had read Eileen when it was on the Booker list. I'll definitely be looking forward to more from this author....more

Would have gotten 5-stars but there was an absolutely unnecessary romance added (probably to appeal to Wingate's readers) which cheapened the story to me. So annoying.
Historical fiction told about Georgia Tann who kidnapped poor children and sold them to rich people from the 1920's to the 1950's. I knew nothing of this, and it was insanely fascinating though obviously horribly tragic.
There are two timelines going on and both stories were interesting, one being sort of a mystery unravelling the other. I thought it was really well told.
Despite the unnecessary romance, my first 2018 favorite. ...more

Less that 200 pages, I was drawn immediately in. A scholarly setting, which I always enjoy despite the fact that I am not scholarly and never been in that setting, often grabs me right away. The topic of mental illness always fascinates, and the story is about reading and writing and love.
This book had the potential to be pretentious and it wasn't. The characters were magnificent. I don't know how you do that in 174 pages.
