Uma caixa que contém o livro e um conjunto de reproduções de gravuras botânicas históricas das orquídeas descritas na obra literária. O único aspeto que lamento é que as 40 gravuras sejam impressas em 20 folhas, duas por cada folha. No caso que querermos emoldurar ou colocar numa outra forma de apresentação, temos sempre uma gravura que se perde, pois, cada folha tem uma frente e um verso. Esta é, primeiro que tudo, uma obra histórica que celebra a grande diversidade botânica da família Orchidaceae e principalmente a história e eventos que caracterizam 40 espécies escolhidas de entre as cerca de 30.000 existentes. Sem critério aparente a não ser a grande variedade, o livro revela gravuras, cartas, descrições e personagens envolvidas em 40 das mais icónicas espécies. Relatos de descobridores, caçadores de orquídeas, botânicos e cultivadores fazem a história de cada espécie apresentada. Uma obra com uma edição cuidada e de muita qualidade. As gravuras e documentos reproduzidos fazem parte do enorme arquivo botânico, um dos maiores do mundo, dos Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Um caderno de viagem que o autor fez acompanhando um grupo de botânicos e zoólogos nas florestas da ilha de Madagáscar! Uma maravilha. Gravuras lindíssimas e que representam tanto do que também presenciei na minha viagem a Madagáscar (15 Set. - 1 Out. 2018). Uma viagem que nunca esquecerei e que, felizmente, tenho também este livro para avivar alguma memória que se queira desvanecer... O autor tem também outros livros de viagens semelhantes, que ainda não conheço, mas que irei certamente procurar.

Que desperdício. Vou com certeza voltar a este livro pelas memórias que me traz.

A sad story about the gardeners that went away to fight the 1st World War. A homage. And the garden would never be the same. Life would never be the same. What a waste. Não só pelas magníficas gravuras de John Day mas também pelo que representa para a botânica e para a história da orquidofilia. John Day foi um aristocrata inglês que viveu no séc. XIX, a norte de Londres, onde reuniu uma das melhores colecções de orquídeas da época. Quando muitas novidades botânicas chegavam pela primeira vez à Europa e eram vendidas em leilões a preços só ao alcance dos mais ricos, as orquídeas eram cobiçadas pelos poucos coleccionadores que rivalizavam com os principais jardins botânicos europeus. Tudo era novidade, as plantas e o seu cultivo, diferente de todas as plantas que conheciam. Cada nova floração era um acontecimento na sociedade britânica vitoriana apaixonada pela botânica. Como ainda não existiam as fotografias, eram importantes os herbários e as gravuras botânicas. John Day, para além de um coleccionador de orquídeas e cultivador de sucesso, teve aulas de pintura e registou em fantásticas aguarelas as florações que ia obtendo. O sucesso destas gravuras foi tanto que outros cultivadores lhe forneciam as suas orquídeas floridas para serem retratadas pelos seus pincéis. No final da sua vida, John Day deixou um legado de 53 cadernos de gravuras executadas num período de 25 anos. Esses cadernos registam e documentam as primeiras florações de orquídeas da sua colecção e das maiores colecções inglesas, incluindo a colecção dos Jardins Botânicos de Kew. Dessa importante herança botânica, hoje pertencente aos Kew Gardens, foram reunidas as melhores gravuras e textos, aos quais os autores acrescentaram notas biográficas e muitas informações úteis sobre a história e a sociedade da época resultando neste fabuloso livro que tem tanto de belo como de importante para qualquer orquidófilo que queira avançar um pouco mais na sua aprendizagem sobre as orquídeas e a sua história. ...more

Termino sem tristeza por ter terminado, o que é raro quando leio um livro assim, mas termino muito mais rico pelo que este livro me deu. Que pena que não foi baseado numa história veridica... Assim teríamos mais para ler e pesquisar sobre a obra e vida de Alma Whittaker. Que se desengane quem leu e gostou de "Comer, Orar, Amar", esta é um romance de ficção que não terá muito a ver com a outra obra que eu não consegui ler e que, agora por causa deste livro, tenho vontade de dar uma segunda hipótese. Talvez. Não sei se este livro será amado pelo grande público, mas felizes os que conseguem compreende-lo, esses vão adora-lo. Um gosto por plantas ou botânica talvez ajude. Há só algumas linhas que eu não colocava neste romance. Não têm grande relevância para a história da maneira crua como estão escritas. São os prazeres sexuais da personagem. Eles estão lá. Fazem parte da vida. Mas não havia necessidade de os escrever tão pormenorizados. Talvez um rasgo de modernidade da autora que eu, pessoalmente, não gostei. Dou-lhe só por isso 4,9 estrelas....more
