Pretty strange book and odd choice for not only a Newbery, but a Caldecott Honor. I'm not familiar with Blake's poetry, so this ode to Blake doesn't make a lot of sense and was difficult to get in to. Illustrations were ok....more

I still can't understand why Louise hated her sister so much, and I felt sick reading about her crush on a man nearly 60 years older than her. I also didn't understand why Louise was just so angry in general when she herself acknowledged how sad it was that Call didn't have a father or how sad she felt about Pearl Harbor; but she grew up with 2 parents and while they were poor, they weren't starving or suffering any major problems (such as the Captain entirely losing his home during a storm). The only thing I enjoyed was the descriptions of the island and catching oysters and crabs....more

Very subtle, slow and hard to get into. The characters weren't very appealing, and the story didn't grab me at all. I probably wouldn't have finished Very subtle, slow and hard to get into. I'm having a hard time thinking young adults would enjoy this book very much. Also, strange mix of weird photos and (decent) drawings. They mostly didn't add much to the story except turn me off of it even more....more
