I didn't really pick it back up except for fits and starts until the middle of April but I'm finally done with it. I'm glad I finished it because ended differently than I expected but man what a slog through science I just couldn't wrap my head around. This just wasn't for me. I probably shouldn't give it such a low rating because I can see why it would be some people's cup if tea, but I rate mostly on enjoyment and it just wasn't enjoyable for me. Added to P's TBR on his Goodreads....more

I didn't love Rowley's first book, the Octopus really through me for a loop and while I understood it, I didn't love it so much. This one, being firmly in the contemporary world was just so filled with humor, heartache, and love that it just captivated me from the start. I really loved all the characters in this story. Patrick aka "Guncle" or "GUP" was in some ways hilarious and in other ways just downright sad. I really felt for him. The niblings were spectacular and Grant was just so cute and funny. While this is a funny book, I laughed out loud in several places, it has depth to it too with a big dollop of grief for everyone. The way Patrick helps his niblings and the way they help him is fantastic. I also loved JED (you'll have to read it to find out who that might be). This book just was so so good and I highly recommend. It makes me that much more eager to go back and read Rowley's The Editor which I haven't read because I wasn't sure I would like it after Lily and the Octopus. Loved this one so much!...more

This is a much more visceral, gut-check of a novel all about Anthony Ray Hinton's thoughts and feelings as he goes through the almost 30 years of being on death row for a crime he didn't commit, all because he is poor and black. I would have added and living in the South but I begin to question that. Yes, maybe because he was in the South the courts were more likely to be stubborn in the face of his unquestionable innocence and not want to admit they were not only wrong, but knew it and purposely convicted him anyway. But really, as our more recent history has played out all across this country, there isn't a city anywhere where just being black and poor is a sentence of guilt. It is appalling. I am very glad I ended up reading this one in addition to Just Mercy. Both are excellent books that everyone should read, especially those living in the United States....more

I understand that most myths are like this from all over the world, however, I'm not sure it is super appropriate for a picture book. I don't think I would want my grandchild to read this book. At least not until they could very clearly discuss it and the feelings it brings up with them. Again, beautiful book wonderfully illustrated but super dark in tone....more

It finally caught my attention sometime in early October and was able to finish it. I did like the story, and when I think back on it, it was a good story. I don't really know why this didn't grab my attention. ...more

I thought Poppy was a Another Henry book I enjoyed, maybe not as much as the other two, maybe a 4.5 rather than a full 5, but still really enjoyable. I thought Poppy was a little annoying at times and I couldn't figure out what was going on with her sometimes but I really liked Alex. I felt so bad for him at times because Poppy was just so clueless and just saying something in the moment would have cleared up so much of their angst, but that is what a rom com is tbh. I enjoyed reading it, was very summery since they took so many summer vacations and I will continue to read the books she puts out. Fun....more

Looking forward to the end of this series in the next book. As far as characters go, we love Penelope and the Incorrigible Children. They are just such precious little beans. The addition of the Babushkinovs was unexpected and interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing how that plays out in the next book. The difference in Fredrick was nice to see, and of course, the utter obliviousness of Lady Constance is at a max in this one. And of course we still love to hate the scheming Edward Ashton. The whole scene at Left Foot Inn was hilarious. These books are really funny. I hope my granddaughter loves this series as much as I do when she gets a bit older. ...more
