I do find the story line a bit hectic, and something I think the TV series did a bit better. While I don't like filler episodes, this rushed ahead so quickly that I'm surprised in the first printings of these books, people could make sense of all the characters. The fight against Metalia and Beryl could have easily made for one more chapter.
And then we're right into the Dark Moon arc! Back into the action again, with first Rei being kidnapped and then Ami. Why not a bit of breathing space?

The comic isn't that bad- it's actually quite good- but the movie captured the essence more. It reminded me a lot of Scott Pilgrim, actually.
But it's always good to see the original, in my opinion. It tells a story all of its own. Here, we get a more realistic approach to Dave's approach to women, and we get a different take on Big Daddy's backstory. But overall, I did prefer the movie. Still, I hear the sequel is good....more
Of the tales that were told, I think the one about the sleeping cities is what I enjoyed the most. Also the story of Prez, the youngest president, was interesting with Boss Smiley. And then there was the story of the young woman on the Sea Witch... and the idea that the fruit of life was eaten by the Indian man aboard the ship.
This story is slightly askew of the main Sandman plot, but it's still part of the lore. ...more

It is disappointing that Naomi was written out, though. That would have been something to hang on to and follow. I'm not the type of person to go and presume, though, that this is due to misogyny or what have you.

A very touching story of a young girl on September 11. I think this is a good way of opening up the topic of what happened on the day with young children, particularly those whose loved ones were killed due to the events. Although this happened over ten years ago now, I'm sure there are some children- especially those who were still babies (or perhaps not even born yet!)- who are still wondering about what happened....more

But I flicked through it a couple of times, and although at first it confused me, as I got to reading it I realised it's actually very good- and, in some ways, scarily real.
The animals on this cover remind me of Easter eggs. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
The comic is incredibly touching and heart-wrenching. Yes, there are lots of explosions and blood and gore, yes, the animals have been horribly abused. But the three animals (and, to an extent, Dr Rosemary) have an incredibly bond and they love each other so much. 1, 2 and 3 (or Bandit, Tinker and Pirate, respectively) look after each other, and they all have their own distinct personalities. I loved their varied speech, too.
I really recommend this comic. Apparently a movie is in the works, which I'm hmmmmmmm about, but this comic is brilliant and wonderful....more

Anyway, my love for Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn grows with this volume, although I do feel it's not quite up to par with Arkham Asylum: Madness. But it's great to finally see the ladies of Gotham City get some real screen time for once, so to speak.
Anyway, I'm going to need to hunt down the first volume of this set, I think. Need to support these lovely female villians!...more

I believe this book should definitely be read with the art- on its own, it may lack the punch it may otherwise have.
The voice Gaiman uses is wry and I liked the general humour, wordplay and perhaps gentle sarcasm he uses throughout. It pokes fun at itself, which I do like in books. But the art brings it together, and allows the work to grow, develop. I loved the sketches at the end....more

Damn you, poorly Here I was, thinking I was reading the first book in the series when really it's the third volume and only the first part of an arc. Damn you, poorly labeled cover! If it were actually the first book I'd probably be a touch less confused. As it was, I wound up Googling the series and reading it from there because I kept confusing all the characters. I'm still confused, needless to say. I'll probably wind up just watching the anime as it seems to be a bit difficult for me to find the whole manga series (especially if they're all poorly labeled as this one is). It was a bit all over the place, and it took a while for the real plot to go into motion. But when it did- wow! I really love it. It's a very gritty novel, but it reflects society in that way. Society isn't nice or friendly, and while day-to-day life may not be as sordid and bleak as it is in Transmetropolitan, but there are circles that are similar. And society is reflected in this piece.
I can't exactly pinpoint what it is about this edition of Transmetropolitan that grabbed me. Maybe it was the city's view of Spider- cute, cuddly, 'defanged' as he said it. Or the way previous characters emerged once again. I do like that- Ellis has good continuity going on here. Or the final few pages, as the world starts to react to Spider's huge revelation.
Now I just need to poke my partner to go and buy #7.

A mysterious diary that tells the future and a group of twelve participants in a battle to the death. Sounds just a touch familiar, mm? But it's a good manga all the same, and against my better judgement, I do really like Yuno, Yuki's obsessed stalker. And then there's Minene, her fabulous dress, despite being a job that would probably lend itself better to simple slacks. But hey, a Lolita has to do what a Lolita has to do, right?
