Trying to wrap my head around a near future where they smear bacteria on walls to help populate children's guts with good bacteria ... Why... would we not just do a supplement, like... probiotic vitamin gummies at breakfast, or I dunno, blow it in from the HVAC or something? The character says (I'm not sure if joking or serious) that kids lick walls... That's common enough in this civilization that spreading bacteria on the walls is going to be an effective way to treat all the kids? You've got bigger problems than gut bacteria, maybe.
Some of the stories felt heavy handed and trying too hard to meet progressive world views. It's not that I disagree with a progressive world view, it's just kind of awkward in a "trying too hard" kind of way.

At a certain point, it became weird for Ian to be so close mouthed... I kept thinking, "Ok, it would be A Good Idea to share some of your experiences from the last go round..." but, he does not deliver other than "yes, that's how I remember it" here and there (Is it the REAL Ian Malcom? Or was the "left for dead" Ian in book 1 cloned and speed-grown in a lab?). It seems he plays dumb through most of the book. To be fair, his previous experience was: went for a car ride, got chucked into the bushes by a T-Rex, then lay around injured, slowly dying, and staring up at the sky philosophizing... so I guess he got a bit more on-the-ground experience in Lost World (before being chucked off a cliff by a T-Rex and laid up for the rest of the book, high and STILL lecturing).
Anytime my partner tells me I talk too much, I can now say, "Yeah, but Ian Malcom." Soooo much output. So much. Say, did I ever tell you about chaos theory? Yes, god, shut UP Ian. I get you are the carrier for information, but so far you have not produced *relevant* information to getting us the f@#$ off this island alive... it's actually making me depressed enough to feel like death-by-dino is not a bad option... so... shhhhhh now....
Also: "I have no idea why it would be a bad idea to take a wounded fledgling T-Rex back to home base... why? why?" (cue the confused faces)
I did love that the females in the book were capable problem solvers and equal players... technically they got dumped with a bunch of emotional labor in the emergency situations: "No idea what to do!" says the brilliant mathematician hanging in a trailer as it's getting pushed off a cliff. "Oh well..."
"What do we do? We have to do something!" flaps the adult paleontologist/dinosaur expert to the 13 year old girl (who then saves the day).
"UGH, she's so BOSSY" thinks the adult paleontologist/dinosaur expert to the women who tells him to flip a light switch. (would it have been easier for you if it'd been a thermostat? just curious).
So that was kind of funny. Also sad. But I liked that the girls were strong, intelligent, capable, and - clearly - patient.
He may have oversold Sarah's capability when he had her pile stoned Malcom and a tween on an eMotorcycle (that could NOT have been a light bike) and ride for their lives ... or when he had her doing a off track rally race next to a running raptor (hey what happened to those other 5 darts??) while having her inexperienced passenger try to shoot the beast from the back.
There are a lot of "this would not actually work out in an emergency, 400 things would go wrong first" sort of situations in the book, but I also watched John Wick, so...no room to complain there.
I was mystified that when all the Raptors were stunned, there was no attempt to thin the herd a bit. You've got 12.... 2 capable people... I think 2 people could stab 6 dinosaurs in the eyeball in a few minutes, right? I just wondered if shrinking their numbers would have made for a less stressful tropical vacation... They seem inclined to default to a "you're on your own" behavior, so maybe even killing one would have kept them busy for a bit. Leave us alone Stripes... just eat James, he's dead...
Not sure what was going on with that computer, that network, or the need for a trap door into a tunnel system under the shed... That was interesting, but so were the e-vehicles...but it was 1995, so I can make a whole lot of room for visions of technology that don't quite make sense (but were fairly visionary for the time period...eDirtbike, etc.).

We recently suffered a cyber attack at work - I was listening to the book during this time, and got to the part where they're trying to get into the computer system to get everything back on line. It was funny to think," Well, at least we don't have dinosaurs to deal with..." in the moment.
I'm generally sympathetic to kids, but Lex was a nightmare. I'm sure she was annoying in text, but she was unbearable in audio....more

A work friend mentioned the Darkover series was one of her favorites when she was growing up, and since we were both Anne McCaffrey fans, I gave it a A work friend mentioned the Darkover series was one of her favorites when she was growing up, and since we were both Anne McCaffrey fans, I gave it a try. I enjoyed it - I seem to love shipwreck/adventure/survival stories, and as she'd mentioned, the writing has a similar vibe to McCaffrey's. I'm just now looking at publication dates and MZB did the same as McCaffrey with the "write the series (started in 1958), add the backstory later (1972)" - so I am interested to see what the "real" Darkover ends up being like compared to the origin story.
I also kind of wonder if there's a little inspiration from this book for the Na'vi from Avatar - Spielberg says he got the inspiration from an alien race he wrote about in a 1970's screenplay so... why not Darkover, right?
As with McCaffrey, there's a mix of attitudes about gender and sex that are reflective of the time period's evolution of gender roles and sexual liberation while still lingering on some dated limitations. Women are space explorers, scientists, leaders (to a point) and professionals in (almost) full control of their sexuality...but it's doubted whether or not they are physically up to the task to climb Alien Mt. Everest as easily as a man (one who has been living in space for many years) could. Romance in the book falls flat because most - if not all - development of any mutual respect and rapport is left out or acquired with the help of "flora ex-machina." This is not much of a criticism, since most don't really look to "traumatized survivors trying to figure it out on a new planet" books for romantic thrills. It's more, "What is going to pop up out of the trees and kill all the redshirts?" thrills. This book has that. And also a bit of exciting "Who is going to eat the first mushroom and trip balls?" suspense.
Both McCaffrey and MZB seem to (as of this book, at any rate) also need an "event" to liberate characters' sexuality. In McCaffrey's case, the mating of the dragons takes over the riders' consciousnesses and they're unable to control themselves (and mate whether they like or hate the person) and in this case, a similar device comes into play. McCaffrey maintains the more puritanical society side by side with the liberated dragonmen, which leads to some interesting conflict. Not sure yet about MZB.
I think what I enjoyed most (other than the exploration/discovery elements), was the ethical dilemma of information/technology/"progress" vs. "look at where it brought us." It's a hallmark of science fiction writing that I appreciate - how each writer visualizes the future and where we are headed, generally framed around the consequences of relentless innovation and mindless "forward progress." How do the characters tackle it? Do they resolve it? Can they? And, reading older Sci-Fi writing now and again (as limited as my reading is lately) is often chilling in how prophetic it is.
For a minor example: at one point, a character points out there is no real challenge to climbing mountain peaks on Earth. Lifts have been built up Everest so that people can go up to the top of the peak with ease. I thought of Jungfrau, crowded with tourists and selfie-sticks and ...well, there we were. Getting up Everest is a now a tourist industry, and where there is industry, innovation to make it easier to make money follows. This is how we "do" humanity - we're careless of humanity in favor of money. Sci-Fi writers often tackle this, and it makes me really wonder why Sci-Fi does not seem to be a stronger part of reading curriculums.

I was really looking forward to the Gene Wolfe story at the end and I enjoyed it ...until... it wrapped up. And then it became a, "Wait, what?" ending... and not the 'oo that was a good plot twist' variety. The suspense was great up to a point.
It's cataloged as a Young Adult novel, but I'd put it more towards 10-13 years than 13+. Sometimes I feel this is muddy, and I'm too liberal with the rating. In this case, it is well earned, and 2/3 of my criteria apply.
It could be a 3/3, but I do enjoy science fiction. I do think, though, that this is a great entry point to the genre. The only "science fiction" about it is that it is set in an eerily real post-disaster America. I'd say it is a poetic and eloquent counterpart to Peter Heller's book, The Dog Stars.
The book is about a society in the time period between disaster and rebirth, where it has been long enough for modern conveniences to fall away, but not long enough for people to forget them and where they where when "it" happened. It is a reminder of all that we take for granted. It is thoughtfully written, well balanced, and for me, brought about some much-craved introspection.
I enjoyed the characters and the way their stories intertwined; I loved the setting (a good portion is set in Toronto); I loved the language and the storytelling. It was well paced - never dry, but not too quick.
I feel like it's a great read for relaxing and speculating "what if this happened...," as well as a reminder to enjoy the modern conveniences we have while we can have them. ...more

Cyberpunkish and geeky, with plenty of gory violence offset by dark, snarky humor and a main character that I absolutely loved. It's kind of like Tucker & Dale vs. Evil + The Matrix + Pretty in Pink.
Well, maybe less Molly Ringwald and more... Ellen Page. So...Juno?
The main character, Zoey, is like a Rainbow Rowell character yanked out of her genre and thrown bewilderingly into a Neal Stephenson/Neil Gaiman/John Scalzi/Christopher Moore/Roald Dahl (ala Willy Wonka) mashup (See? I can't help myself...). She's heavily abused from start to finish, but not a victim of her circumstances, and while bewildered by events, she's smart and tougher-than-she-realizes. She gets a number of great one liners and her character is fantastic.
It made what didn't work for me in the book more or less trivial. It gets a bit "Kill Bill/Pulp Fiction" violent and the villain is over the top dramatic (and his name...good lord...), but not enough to really make much of a dent in my enjoyment reading it.
I loved the setting, the main character, some of the great, dark humor and lines in here. I liked "the Suits" and the ridiculous Casa de Zoey and her stinky cat.
Most bewildering of all, is that in all the chaos and explosions and bloodshed and strange underwear are some great tidbits of...sense. And philosophy. Not too heavy handed. Didn't expect that.
The audiobook has a good narrator, from the clip I've heard, but I think someone like Fisher Stevens might have been a better pick for this one.

It's dark and atmospheric with vivid descriptions.
There's a few twists - some pretty predictable, some a little less so. The ending, I didn't expect...and it irked me, though I didn't see really that there was any other way TO end the story.
I feel like I have a lot to say about this book...but when I start to write it, I end up a little turned around and subsequently deleting my thoughts.
In a nutshell, it's a good story for those who enjoy horror writing without getting too deeply horrific. The main character is a bit... Salander-ish....more

It had the feel of (very much) Brave New World meets The Little Mermaid (my boss mentioned Wall-E and the self-contained spaceships) and it started out very interesting, but in the second half of the book it seemed to derail. Instead of focusing on Sal, the scope was broadened to the people of the raft and the overall experience of the raft itself. I actually didn't mind this; however, so much build up went into Sal and this change from being an air breathing human to gill breathing human salamander that I assumed there'd be some complications on a more intimate, personal level for her as she adjusted to her new life. It felt like something was missing. Largely any real connection to human emotion. There's fear, but I'm never convinced of it. There's love, but I'm even less convinced of that. The Little Mermaid metaphor didn't really pan out, as well (lucky for Sal).
It *really* felt like something was missing, when, as other reviewers have said, the pirates mentioned in the teaser never appeared. I was really looking forward to some pirates. Really, wouldn't it have been cool? Ultra modern floating city with no pollution and robots all over it, raided by pirates (ok presumably not classic pirates in this case, but still).
(Though classic pirates...that'd be just awesome.)
A sidenote: pre-gills, she kept talking about being "friends with the fish"...we had some thoughtful reflection and questions, and then... "I will be friends with the fish!" No you won't - they're fish. Not only are they not likely to be better friends than the humans you already live with, but since your kind makes a habit of eating them, they probably won't like you as much as you like them. What kind of plants are they growing in those hydroponic towers, anyway? (my kindle note, actually, says "what is this chick smoking?" so I suppose I made an assumption about just what was growing there). Those few lines about her desire to curl up with a flounder and cuddle could probably be removed without any dent in the storytelling.
I do feel that the rafts themselves are where the best story is - they're a better developed character than the people in the book. I liked the rafts. I liked that we got a lot of information about them. I was rooting for their little raft to survive.
The people, though, were very much "Brave New World." Sestus does at least remark (paraphrase), "We were becoming robots! We were moving away from humanity." Yes! I agree! But that needed more...more angst, more reflection, more emotion!
Brave New World was successful in portraying the mental breakdown in the characters as they went from "the Utopia I've always known" to "ugly reality" and couldn't handle it. These characters don't seem to really truly struggle with being cut off from humanity as they know it (someone singing me a song when I'm panicking and afraid for my future is not going to soothe me!), or with massive physical changes, or with monogamy and child rearing after centuries of outsourcing reproduction, or with exile, etc. etc.
Overall the concept is a neat idea, without the most compelling characters in the world. It was, however, a little less wooden than some other science fiction tales I've read, so I'm still giving it 3 stars for the entertainment.

I found myself tuning out a bit, whereas early on I was fixated on "What will happen next??" "How will X problem be solved?"
I enjoyed the narrator - especially his portrayal of different characters. That was really well done. I also enjoyed the idea of the story, the character and most of the humor. Near the end it also got a bit repetitive.
Solid B+, here. A good road trip listen for people who love those "out of the frying pan, into the fire...and not just any fire, but a REALLY bad one" sort of stories, with a strong - but not too heavy - emphasis on "space geek stuff."

Up to that point, it was a given in my mind that he somehow survives all this crap despite all the odds, and it kept my interest seeing how he was going to get from point A. to point B.
The foreshadowing threw in an element of doubt, which made me immediately detach myself from the story and start thinking about: does he die?
I mean, flip a coin, really, but I could see how this could be all kinds of build up for a ridiculous tragedy at the end.
I decided that he would obviously not die...since everyone keeps raving about the book...and we know how people get when their main characters get the axe (literally).
So I felt a little annoyed that Weir even attempted to jerk strings this way. I think this yanked me out of the narrative all together and made me start asking questions other than "oh wow, how is he going to get through THIS situation?"
My second beef, here, is that - like another reviewer mentioned - the crises start to lose their oomph after a while. Ok, I know, it's dangerous and anything can happen, but does EVERYTHING have to happen?
There's a whole segment where he's getting ready for his road trip where I felt like he'd NEVER get going. This may have been a product of my own desire to just get where I was going. I don't know.
And, lastly, I think it'd be lovely for Mark Watney to return to Earth and live into old age, that guy who survived that thing on Mars... but at the end, a dark side of me thought: can you imagine if this guy gets all the way back to earth and gets killed by something REALLY stupid on his way home from the airport? Because it'd be a guy who got through all of this crap with his intelligence and instinct for survival that gets killed by something ridiculous and stupid.
But of course not. I'm sure he gets back to earth, meets that gal who had to spy on him all the darn time, they fall in love and get married and have kids and grandkids who he incessantly and forgetfully pesters with his "boring Mars story again" years down the road. "Granddad's talking about Mars..." "Oh boy, did he tell you about the time he rolled the Mars Rover?"

I did get a bit confused as to who was who. I think this would be more clear in text vs. audio. I restarted the book after I finished, as I realized 2 characters were actually 1 character in 2 different times. Confusing!

I've got Grateful Dead singing "What a long strange trip it's been..." stuck in my head as I think about how to describe it.
And good lord is it ever a strange trip - 780 pages with multiple storylines, nearly all of them switching between VR and Reality, and across multiple continents and settings... this book is an exercise in patience - but! it rewards with vivid imagery, compelling characters, some fantastic pieces of writing (now and then a sentence or paragraph would jump out and just seem *perfect*) and spooky foresight for 1996 when the book was written. There are news snippets at the beginning of each chapter that often felt relevant in the present.
Within the sci-fi VR setting, the book has the freedom to include fantasy elements and settings, which I particularly appreciated.
I fully enjoyed the adventure, but caught myself starting to skim-read as I got towards the end - not because it was bad, but because I started to get caught in the "get to the destination" trap. I have been out of the habit of reading epic fantasy, so I'll have to work on that as I continue. I felt it was good enough to seek out the other 3 books and buy them from thriftbooks.

A friend has been recommending Octavia Butler for years; forgetting which book she'd recommended, I managed to pick up one that doesn't fit her usual style. She's considered a science fiction writer, and this is really not. The character time travels, but without any scientific connection whatsoever. This is more like Gabaldon's Claire Randall walking through the standing stones, than H.G. Well's Time Machine or Connie Willis's time traveling anthropologists.
I liked the writing style - the author is not overly wordy or descriptive, but she's not spare or "stark." Characterization rules over setting and plot and relationships are conflicting and complex.

(view spoiler)[ I loved that I didn't get one, but two, steps into history and perspective. First, the story is set in 1976, the main character, Dana, is a black woman married to a white man. This was not quite a decade past Loving v. Virginia (a white man married a black woman, moved back to their home state of Virginia and they ended up jailed. The resulting legal battle resulted in a ruling that it was unconstitutional to make inter-racial marriage illegal.) and while the character's home of L.A. might have been more accepting of such a match, at one point when the characters visit modern day Maryland, they receive double takes and stares. While even today people still take issue with inter-racial marriage, in the time period the book is set, this is especially significant and unusual.
Second, Dana gets yanked back in time to the 1800's, evidently connected in some way to a child who will one day be her ancestor. The child, Rufus, is an only child and the white son of a slaveholder. Every time Rufus's life is threatened, Dana is pulled back in time, and time is - to quote the doctor "wibbly wobbly timey wimey...stuff."
I think what was especially significant about this to me, other than her conflicting feelings towards Rufus, her husband, and others, was the character's wake up call about her perception of slavery as history vs. the reality of living it. The things she thought would give her an edge and advantage ultimately caused her more suffering. Several times, people tell her that despite talking "like a white person," she's being stupid. She's not one of those characters who is impossibly frustrating in her lack of common sense, thank god. The character is sensible and intelligent, but she doesn't have the coping and survival skills that those who have grown up in a life of slavery have developed. (hide spoiler)]

Throughout the book there were no reactions or emotions expressed by characters that didn't feel authentic and real vs. overly dramatic, concocted or thrown in. This is what made me love the book.
Also, a big part of Kindred felt centered on situation and environment and how we are easily shaped by circumstance vs. our morals and ideals. Dana was not less ruthless than Rufus, though her ruthlessness translates as necessity rather than opportunity. She was willing to let horrible things continue on in favor of her own survival. Everything for her rested on Hagar's existence and so she tolerated and waited and advocated and saved him. In the end, every other person in the group of characters: Sarah, Nigel, Carrie, their children - didn't matter. Her survival was more important to her than theirs'. It's human, of course, but then, so was Rufus's behavior - the product of a doting woman and an abusive, distant father. Dana's influence did shape him and make him better than he might have otherwise been, but it was not the majority of his life experience and so it was not enough. After a short time in that setting, Dana, who was less powerless than those around her, was looking out for herself at the expense of others. This is not a judgmental statement, but an observational one. Kevin's experience and life in the past changed and shaped him dramatically as well - while the aging is obvious, it's the hardness/coldness and his reluctance to adapt back to modern life that struck me most. I could dissect this element of the book for a while and ramble too long, so I'll just say "it was thought provoking" and let it rest there.
Oh, it was also interesting that she showed up again after Kevin had a tantrum and stormed off when she wouldn't write for him. What the heck, buddy... that gave away a childish "Rufus"ish side to him from early on (and perhaps an overly tolerant side to her nature, as well). (hide spoiler)]

It's reasonable to say this'd be a cyberpunk classic, but I would not read it before or after a William Gibson novel, the jarring shift in styles might give you whiplash. Try before/after Snow Crash.
Probably all 3 novels, if they're the same length, could have been combined into an omnibus. ...more
