Oooooooookay then
I can honestly, 100% say that I have never read anything like this before
Shoot the Messenger takes place in the future (kind of), with a fantasy aspect (kind of). It actually felt like if The Cruel Prince and Star Trek had a baby, it would be this book.
I never realized how many plot twists could happen in 285 pages. I started to feel whipped around by what all was happening, and I had to go back and reread some portions in order to understand what was going on. The plot twists did make sense to the story, and for the most part I didn't feel like they were put in there just to have something there. However, I could have done with one or two less OMG WHAT IS HAPPENING moments...my poor little heart can't take all that stress.
The romance wasn't entirely there either, and the parts that were there were confusing. I wasn't sure what was happening with Kesh and her boys, or if anything was supposed to be happening with them. There were a lot of hot feelings for several characters, and I wasn't certain who I should have been shipping, if anyone.
So yeah....I have confusing feelings for this book, but I'm still going to be reading the next book in the series because I hate cliff-hangers (which this one has), and my insatiable need to know what happens next needs to be, well, satiated. ...more
Red Rising is the story of a revolution. The Reds are oppressed by the rest of society, living at the bottom of civili4 stars
Oh wow.
Okay let's begin.
Red Rising is the story of a revolution. The Reds are oppressed by the rest of society, living at the bottom of civiliation. They are basically slaves, working day and night for the betterment of the other color classes. We have the Golds, who are at the top of society, then the Bronze, Silvers, Blues, Greens, and Pinks. Each color serves their own purpose.
Our hero, Darrow, has faced a tragic loss in his life. He is chosen by the people of the revolution, the group Ares, to be the start and face of said revolution. His intelligence is why Darrow is the Chosen One. He solves crazy hard puzzles in minutes, and is able to think in a certain, intelligent way to solve certain, intelligent problems.

Darrow is transformed from a Red to a Gold, undergoing a series of extremely painful procedures to make the transformation.

Afterwards, he then takes a test, and is admitted to a school for the most elite Golds....the Academy. It is here that he learns what it means to be a leader, and also makes some new friends and new enemies and learns that not all is what it seems.
Basically, this Academy is a grown-up version of The Hunger Games. We have children/young adults who are put into a world where they are to conquer each other. The theme is not death, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.....

Overall, I did enjoy the story. I had a really hard time connecting with the characters, especially Darrow, and wasn't able to fully enjoy it until about 70% of the way into the book. Why 4 stars? Because of how it ends. I wasn't sure I would be able to take more of everything that makes Red Rising, Red Rising....but the changes in Darrow and other key characters make me want to come back for more. Now if the library could get me the next book soon that would be great. ...more
