They started out with 10 men but one man did leave early in the journey. The men were all excited, rowdy and hollering, and ineperienced boatmen. None knew what they were getting into. The boats were well made but not for the ferocity of the river. They did lose one boat and more than half of their food by the end of the 99 days that it took to get through the Grand Canyon starting at Green River Station to the mouth of the Virgin River. By the time they reached that river, there was only 6 men. Three had left earlier never to be heard from again.
They were glad to come to the end of the trail-after experiencing horrible white water, fire, feuding thirst and hunger....more

She lived on the outskirts of town and met Nasim, an elderly lady who taught her much about the land and the winds that inhabited the area.
I seem to resonate with the author, having grown up in Casper WY and living there most of my life. I knew the wind but unlike Ms Marwitz, I did not name the winds. It was interesting how she came across each name but each was fitting for the season in which she named it. And in doing so, she wove tales of her life with Nasim and her adult life as well....more

Even today farmland is disappearing, the economy is not good so farmers are having to sell out only to have housing developments taking over....more

I have always been interested in geology and this book is about how the Florida Keys came to be.
Not only does it talk about the Keys themselves but also the surrounding reefs and what is happening to them. It starts off with the Pleistocene era and that topography that shapes the coral reefs, the weather that helped and now the rise in the sea level due to global warming.
It is a very technical book and at times hard to read but it does have good pictures and maps to help the reader....more

It explains the rock history from the Precambrian period to the present time. It starts with the Grand Canyon since the rocks nearest the river are probably the oldest and starts progressing through time that Utah, New Mexico and part of Arizona and Colorado were deserts, oceans and mountain building time. The author describes the various rock layers found and where to see them. He writes in eary to understand language and has numerous maps and charts.

I wanted to learn more about the Everglades and the Florida Keys and this book had a lot of the answers to what was there to see in the Keys and the Everglades.
It broke it down into parts and even gave a brief history of how the area was formed. There were a couple of sections on the Everglades north and south of the park, and then the ark itself. The Keys were broken in the the upper, middle and lower keys, with Key West and the Dry Tortugas National Park, a chapter by itself.

This is not just for the hiker, but for the hunter, fisherman, and outdoor enthusiast as well. It speaks of the danger of the big corporations destroying what we have gained through the years, by presidents who saved lands for future generations and those who destroy what was done just to please those corporations (such as the mining and oil industry) wanting to make the big buck, the almaighty dollar.
For those that have been to Yellowstone Park or the Grand Canyon, would you want to see a nasty hole in the ground or an unsightly oil well to mar the beauty? It's all up to us to save what we have....more
