It's a dystopian fantasy romance. The romance is pretty quick, but I liked their relationship and I found the set up of the world really interesting. I'm definitely looking forward to picking up the physical copy of this and the sequel when they come out. ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I think it has quite a few flaws hence the four stars. Some things happened a little too easily, some parts were a bit corny and some lines were repeated a little too often. Plus the timeline is pretty short so it can be seen to be a bit insta lovey and the relationship does hinge quite a bit on the concept of fate and destiny. Disregarding all of that, I absolutely loved reading this. I'm not familiar with the story of the white snake so I can't comment on how it compares to the original story. I did like the author's note explaining her inspirations and I may check it out at some point since it's a classic Chinese folktale.
Anyway, this made me pretty emotional. I laughed, I cried, I got mad. It was an overall fun read for me. I just really enjoyed the ride and I will for sure get my hands on a physical copy when this releases....more

This book follows Antsy, Cora's redheaded roommate from the previous book, in her world of lost things.
This book hit me kind of hard. There's a trigger warning at the beginning of the book and nothing *really* happens. Just the idea of it happening and the way it was written kind of shook me to my core. I've never been triggered by a book. There are books that have made me uncomfortable and books that have made me sob, but I've never felt so scared and small after reading something. When Tyler approaches Antsy and the things he says to her and her thought process. It hit me so personally. It was so unsettling to feel that way. Seanan's writing is so good and powerful and it was probably more so because she was writing from experience.
Getting past that though and into the actual world, it wasn't my favorite of the series. I didn't like the world of lost things too much and I spent most of it waiting to see how she was going to end up at Eleanor's. Really this book is more of a 3 to me, but the beginning was so powerful I can't give it lower than a four. I just love Seanan McGuire's writing so much. Now I wait to see what book 9 will bring. ...more

I had convinced myself when reading Across the Green Grass Fields that Regan was a character that had been previously introduced, only to find out in this book that she wasn't. It's been while since I've read the other books so that's why I was confused, but I was really trying to make her fit somewhere in my hazy memory of what I had already read.
Anyway, this book follows Cora and although I'm a little disappointed we didn't get to see her world (I mean mermaids?? Hello?), I still really enjoyed this one. This story is set back in Eleanor's school, but then it isn't. Cora packs up her bags and leaves to go to a different school for Wayward children that tries to "fix" the children that come back, because she thinks it'll help her.
This one felt a little like the first book, Every Heart a Doorway. There's this mystery aspect to it and as it goes on more and more is revealed about the school and the people. Seanan Mcguire just has this way of writing that makes the story seems so much larger and more than the few pages you're given. She is able to pack so much into so little without making it rushed or like you're missing something.
I'll definitely need to go back and reread the other books at some point especially the ones I rated on the lower side. I think I would definitely appreciate them more now. Maybe when all the books are out I'll do it. I really love spin offs for some reason and these are like spin offs, but with a connecting story and it's so exciting to piece together the who's and what's and where's. It's great. ...more

Kind of insane to end this book with a threesome LOL.
This took me way too long to read, but despite that I thoroughly enjoyed every second of the experience. I liked the way this was written and enjoyed the atmosphere and the slow build up of the story to the end where she finally kills him. I liked the characters and the relationships and how the abusive relationship was depicted. The whole vibe of this book was just so delicious. It was dark and sexy and infuriating. I had a good time and I'm happy to have finally read it. ...more

I flew through this one. I mean it's short, but also Seanan Mcguire just has this way with words that really draws me in. I didn't think I would care too much about Regan and her horses, but I really liked this one. I can't even pinpoint what exactly I liked about this except that it was just so well told? I felt compelled to read more, the world was interesting, you don't get to know the characters beyond Regan too too well, because it's so short, but you learn just enough to carry the story. I was getting nervous towards the end because I felt there were too little pages left for what Regan was sent to accomplish, but I liked the ending. It was so abrupt? But it fit, because it was what Regan was probably experiencing too. It had an impact. This series is great....more
