If you enjoy spicy historical romances and you haven't read the League of A spicy, slow-burn historical romance infused with humor and woman's rights.
If you enjoy spicy historical romances and you haven't read the League of Extraordinary Women series by Evie Dunmore - what are you waiting for? The Gentleman's Gambit is the fourth and final book of the series and I'm sad to see the series end. I've loved these books, these heroines and their dashing heroes.
Catriona is an introvert after my own heart. She was intelligent, neurodivergent and felt she wasn't wife material. From, the hilarious moment of their meeting, I wanted to swoon over Catriona and Elias. Alas, I never fully did. It might be because as the final book in this series, there was a lot going on here aside from Catriona and Elias' romance, to tie up the series overall. While, I enjoyed seeing the couples from previous books and their work on women's rights, I felt like it detracted a little from the current romance. I wasn't as invested as I was with Annabelle & Sebastian from Bringing Down the Duke and Lucie and Tristan from A Rogue of One's Own who were my series faves.
I loved, loved, loved the epilogue though, showing me where everyone ended up! Overall, this was a fun read but if I'm rating all the books - this was definitely my least favorite. Still, I'm excited to see what Evie Dunmore writes next! ...more

A historical Victorian era murder mystery involving mediums, spirits, seances, secrets and even a little romance.
I don't read much historical fiction A historical Victorian era murder mystery involving mediums, spirits, seances, secrets and even a little romance.
I don't read much historical fiction but I dabble in the genre now and then. I read and loved The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner in 2021 so I knew I had to give this book a read and I wasn't disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed the spiritual, otherworldly premise of this book. I have always been fascinated by mediums. The idea that a medium/spiritualist invokes spirits of murder victims in the hopes of learning the truth surrounding their death is so intriguing.
I loved the two main female characters - Lenna Wickes and Vaudeline D'Allaire and their contrasting beliefs (science versus spiritualism). Lenna was trying to figure out what happened to her sister, who was killed. She teams up with Vaudeline and the two women find themselves in the middle of the secrets, schemes and misdoings of the all male London Seance Society.
I am a fan of Penner's style and how she embraces a suspenseful, gothic vibe while focusing on strong female characters who don't conform to the time's norm. I listened to this on audio and loved the narration by Lauren Irwin and Alex Wyndham....more

This series is so much fun. I loved Bixby in the previous book and this story did not disappoint. Also, this book was chock full of cameos that made my heart happy! Give me all the Ned, Cecilia, Alex, & Charlotte moments. Honestly, the entire supporting cast of feuding pirates and witches are amazing. So many funny moments!
The witty banter between Bixby and Alice, their sizzling chemistry, and the many angsty moments between them had me hooked. I loved that Alice was neurodiverse and Bixby was so in tune with her needs. I adored their back story and was genuinely rooting for their happiness, away from the Agency. It was so sweet to watch them battle their emotionless upbringing and embrace feelings/emotions.
This one is filled with over the top moments that will have you laughing, emotional moments that will make you swoon and some steamy moments too. If you enjoy quirky romances - I highly recommend this delightful series.

Be whisked away to Bright Leaf - a community of powerful tobacco executives, beautiful socialites, extravagant parties and opulent dresses where underBe whisked away to Bright Leaf - a community of powerful tobacco executives, beautiful socialites, extravagant parties and opulent dresses where underneath the facade of glamour and glitz lies corporate greed, lies and callous cover-ups. Wow, Adele Myers had me hooked with this book! I was engrossed by Maddie’s story and the life of the Big Tobacco executives and their families. We have seen a lot come to light over the years regarding the blatant lies and cover-ups that Big Tobacco companies employed to sell cigarettes and make money, including hiding the truth regarding how harmful cigarettes are for our health. I love how Adele spun this tale which was part coming of age story about Maddie, a down on her luck young girl who is working as a dressmaker, to the strong women working in the factories and fighting for their rights post-war and the medical professionals and executives who ignore health issues and instead market their products as having health benefits to make a profit. This is a work of fiction, rooted in truth, and at times it was haunting and disturbing to read the effects tobacco had on the factory workers, the members of the community living near the factories and of course the customers who used the product. Yet, you also can’t help being taken in by the opulence and beauty of the lives the Tobacco Wives led. If you enjoy historical fiction with glitz, intrigue and a touch of romance don’t miss this debut novel. I’ll definitely be looking forward to more from this author in the future....more
A historical novel focused on racism, social justice, interracial relationships, secrets, love, family and grief. I love Diane Chamberlain and The LA historical novel focused on racism, social justice, interracial relationships, secrets, love, family and grief. I love Diane Chamberlain and The Last House On the Street did not disappoint! Historical fiction, dual timelines (1965 & 2010), racial prejudice, interracial relationships, and so much emotion - the two women’s stories will grip you. I found the storyline a bit predictable but so heartfelt. I loved the 1965 storyline (Ellie) more than the one centered on 2010 (Kayla). It definitely felt more emotional. Overall, I love how Chamberlain wove together elements of history, love, mystery and social justice. ...more

I am not a huge historical fiction reader but I enjoy it from time to time, especially if it features strong female characters like in The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba. This was told via multiple perspectives, all adding to the overall story. And what a story it was!
Evangelina Cisneros is thrown in jail as a rebel during the Cuban War on Independence. She is dubbed "The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba" by the press. Telling the tale of her imprisonment helps raise awareness of the truth of what is happening in Cuba.
Grace Harrington is a young female reporter who lands a job at William Randolph Hearst's newspaper in 1896. She becomes more and more aware of the realities of the war in Cuba and wants to write about the women who often go unseen and unheard.
Maria Perez is a young Cuban woman who gave up her life of privilege and was renounced by her family when she married a poor man for love. Trying to make ends meet while she cares for her daughter and mother-in-law, she becomes a secret courier for the Cuban Revolutionaries in Havana.
We follow these three women's stories, each showing bravery, strength, love and compassion in her own way. I love that this was based on the real Cuban heroine. What an extraordinary woman and life! I thoroughly appreciate reading a work of historical fiction like this that can not only entertain but educate. Cleeton has a gift for story-telling that simply sweeps you away. I listened to this one audio and easily lost myself in the tumultuous time period for hours on end. I must read her previous works soon.
