Possibly because they’re too short.
Why was Octavia’s sister hardly in this book? Especially after the marriage? Why was it presented to the reader as a marriage of convenience but was really a manipulations/forced marriage? That kind of turned me off of Jasper. The girls needs to be more present in the book as they’re part of the central storyline. It often seems Scott is more focused on sex scenes than flushing out her book/characters. Which is too bad since the stories are compelling. Why not keep the long detailed sex scenes but also round the story out? It would elevate her as a historical romance author.
I was not a fan of the magical penis that seems to fix everything when there are major issues with the marriage.
Will give Jasper points for straightening things out about the cheating and realizing how he was wrong and how he needed to change and grow now that he was a father and husband. Could have done without the attack on Octavia, it really didn’t add to the story, and I would have preferred for Jasper to mature and grow and be vulnerable without her nearly dying. Also why didn’t Mirabelle come around during this?...more

I hate slut shaming in books and in real life, this kind of stuff just pisses me off. This is one of the worst heroines. She's also a doormat when she's with the cheating hero.
I guess I'd say they deserve each other since they're both awful.

I can’t really call this a romance. He was with his girlfriend for about the 65%-70% of this book. Just not good vibes. He’s a bad boyfriend to his girlfriend even outside of the emotional cheating amp kissing. It seems to run in the family, his brother Nate is a horrible boyfriend too. He’s so bad that Blaine tells him so. It was laughing hysterical.
I feel for Rosie at the beginning, and probably through the first 50% of the book. Life after high school doesn’t always work out the way we plan. We make mistakes. Rosie’s seems to be jumping in too fast with the wrong type of guys. But she has more and more TSTL moment as the book nears its conclusion.
In the end I didn’t really like either of the MCs. They didn’t have enough redeeming qualities individually or together.
Some large plot holes as well and nonsensical plot points.

The writing is so immature it feels like a high school creative writing piece and not a professionally written/edited/published book.
I mean seriously this has to be the most immature dense “hero” ever. He thinks an awful lot in his head about how he “took care of things” but yeah, nope, he didn’t.
And why the he££ did the heroine stay married to him for 4 years? Pay the $500 and file for divorce and child support. She’s a bit dense in that sense.
Then the author... I can’t even. Over exaggeration. It actually reminds me of when I see/read boys/men writing/talking about women with unrealistic descriptors.
Only reason it’s 2 stars instead of 1 Star is because there were complete sentences even if there were grammatical issues.

She one minute they hate him for what he did then the next it’s not really that big of a deal because he can’t remember and didn’t mean to.
It gets rounded up to 2 stars because it has okay sentence structure even if there are tons of editing mistakes. ...more

I enjoy finding new authors especially independent ones that I can support but there is so much crap out there in the ebook world and I hate wading through it.
I just don’t understand the all the hype around books like this one that play into such horrible stereotypes and add to the constant rape culture we already live in. Where are the strong heroines who’ll stand up for themselves? Why does every hero have to be a manwhore billionaire? (To each their own when it comes to who and how many people they sleep with, I’m totally against slut-shamming.) Where are the supportive best friends? (Note: telling your friend they need to get laid then seeking out a random dude is not being a good friend and more like setting your best friend up to be hurt.)
I don’t recommend this book.
There are tons of amazing contemporary romances out there. Read one of those instead....more

I loved Juliana from the get go. Her family in general have been fun and entertaining to read. I loved in this book how we saw characters from the first two books who weren’t just her direct blood relatives. Her sister-in-law’s younger sister is Juliana’s best friend by this book and we see the Earl, their older brother. Whom I’d love to see get his own book. I’d even love to see Mari’s story as a novella to this series.
We see the return of the St. John/Fiori siblings’ mother but I don’t feel like that story line was wrapped up. It had no true resolution. Even at almost the very end Juliana is questioning if she is like her mother.
I’ve read a lot of reviews for this book who think Leighton is an a$$hole for how he treats his sister but I found in this book he very much redeems himself for hot he treated her in the previous book. His reconciliation with his sister is actually where we see the turning point in him as a character, as a man, as a human. He learns much from both his sister and Juliana and I actually did like him by the end even if he was not my favorite hero.
I’ve enjoyed the series and I could see myself rereading it sometime. I’m on to the next series which starts 10 years down the road with Leighton’s ex fiancée, Penelope, Finding her own true love. ...more

This book has a much different style than the rest in the series, it does not have the same history heavy focus that the others do. I don’t know if the author didn’t have a story that revolved around to write so she changed it up, if her publisher told her she needed to make it lighter, or if her fans were asking for something lighter. While I still enjoyed this book do really did miss that aspect of it and felt like I was reading a stand alone or a completely different series with a few similar character names.
I LOVED the heroine Cate, she was strong and vibrant from the get go and never let up yet she still had true human faults that you’d find in any twenty year old female who’d been bullied and felt insecure about certain things. She readily admits to her faults and is quick to apologize for her wrong doing and never does anything maliciously.
However the same can’t be said for our hero, Gregor, the most handsome man in Scotland. Sometimes he seems to abhor the title and other times he likes to use it when it works in his favor. He unlike some of the past heroes of the series seems to fall into love (or like) fairly quickly and he seems like a good guy once he gets past a few hurdles but then in the last third of the book things just go down hill for him. Instead of character growth it’s like character regression. The things he does and says...(view spoiler)[ I’m not one for cheating heroes/characters especially after a relationship has been established and a blow job counts a cheating in my book even if you “can’t finish” because you’re too drunk. (hide spoiler)].
He does try to win Cate back and we learn right at the end a few more “behind the scenes” things he does but to me that just made those things feel cheap and insincere and were I her I would have felt even more crushed. There are some major red flags at the end too like beat up guys who dance with her at her birthday celebration etc though she and Gregor are no longer together. If this were real life we’d call him a stalker and advise her to get a restraining order. Not too romantic. This is why I had to take another star off. ...more

Way more years than I expected. I don’t cry too often in books but this one had them welling in my eyes a few times. Such heartbreak and loneliness.
And the grief/depression, though mostly in the past, was so hard to read knowing how things like mental health and mental illness were treated back then.
I think this was my first Julia London book, though I’ve known about her for decades. It won’t be my last....more
