The writing is excellent and this short tell-all can be read in one sitting .
My concerns are this: (1) there is no index for students to access information like salary, college degree, etc. or a glossary (2) there are not enough photos and/or only having photos in the center of the book defers the excitement of seeing the final product being explained elsewhere in the book and (3) this really is not written for middle schoolers. High school, maybe.
I'm glad to have these titles but they may prove less enticing and useful to students than I originally thought. ...more

Unfortunately this wasn't that kind of book but it was fascinating to listen to....more

While there isn’t enough detail to truly honor these women, the hope is that readers will be inspired to learn more through further research. A good addition to middle school nonfiction collections. The other books in the series seem interesting too.

Both have me thinking about the past...and why we are HERE right now. Jason Reynolds' "not history" YA version of Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America is simply brilliant. As someone who does not often read nonfiction, this was a book I devoured. Reynolds used sarcasm perfectly to explain (again and again) how racism was and is a political and economic tool in policy making.
I hope I can convince every one of my students to read this. As much as I loved Long Way Down and think it is Reynolds' best fictional work, Stamped is far and away one of the best books I have ever read....more

The book has black and white illustrations throughout and has the appearance of a nonfiction text designed for middle schoolers in mind. However there is prolific profanity throughout the book, some within the quotations, and others used simply to add sensationalism. While thought-provoking and informative, this is a complicated and terrifying era of American history that many high school students will struggle to make sense of. ...more
Heartwarming and interesting, this slim nonfiction book gives a wonderful look into the lives of elephants and killer whales to explain how smart and Heartwarming and interesting, this slim nonfiction book gives a wonderful look into the lives of elephants and killer whales to explain how smart and compassionate they are. Author Carl Safina embedded himself with researchers at Amboseli National Park in Kenya to simply learn to observe without judgement how elephants interact within their family groups, how they protect one another and how they teach their young. While poaching remains a true horror for the elephants in the region, the herds are making some comebacks due to years of drought-free weather and better protections by conservancy groups. Elephants have distinct personalities and can often be seen as silly, joyful, irritated, tense or sad. While it is easy to use our human emotions to understand their behaviors, researchers point out that it is important to respect these animals in their own magnificent way. Though an unlikely pairing for a book, the author next heads to the Pacific Northwest to view killer whales, members of the dolphin group, who also live in pods, train their young and work together in a highly intelligent way. Threatened due to live capture by Sea World and other tourist centers in the 1960s and 70s and now facing inhospitable waters to fish and thrive, killer whales remain an ancient presence in the ocean. All the more fascinating is that killer whales are playful and tender when encountering humans. They have been known to save stranded boats and kayakers by encircling them and guiding them back to safe waters. While a truly fascinating addition to nonfiction animal collections, this is a book for inquisitive and deep thinkers. ...more
