I still absolutely adore this series and I don’t think I can wait for the next book to come out! I need it and I need it now!
I’m intrigued to see how Mo Xi is going to deal with the fact that he now knows more of the context around Gu Mang’s defection to their enemy, and how he’s going to go about trying to get to the bottom of the whole story. But at the same time I’m intrigued to see how their relationship is going to change and be affected by what happened in the Time Mirror.
I genuinely still think about these characters at least once a week so I think it’s only going to get worse now that I’ve finished this one as well! I need the next book!...more

I also don’t really know what I thought of this one. I don’t know whether it was the steampunk elements of it, or the pseudo father/son relationship between the two main characters or what but I don’t think I actually enjoyed this one as much as I have enjoyed others in the same genre.
I think the integration of the steampunk elements with the traditional Chinese world is a really interesting concept but I don’t know whether it is one for me. I will probably read the others in the series just so that I can form a proper opinion of it, but I’m not holding out a great deal of hope at this stage. ...more

But seriously, I need Oh god, how does a book with such a pretty cover manage to absolutely destroy me with every new chapter?! What is this sorcery!?
But seriously, I need volume three like right now because why did it end there?! Mo Xi you say sike right now or I swear I will riot! I’m glad that Gu Mang is starting to get his memories back but hoo boy is this going to be a painful journey back for him and Mo Xi.
I’m intrigued to see where this is going to go, going forward as well. I imagine the threats to Chonghua haven’t just disappeared overnight but what is coming next?! And why did Gu Mang suddenly appear in the capital all of a sudden? I need answers people and I cannot believe that we have to wait until March to get them! I’m getting a preorder in, I don’t even care!
But definitely this is tied for first place in my favourite danmei series so far, tied with MDZS for sure! ...more

I’m always going to have a soft spot for MDZS as it was the first series that I read and introduced me to the genre, but oh I’m already obsessed with these characters and this world.
I’m so intrigued by the relationship between Mo Xi and Gu Mang and I wish I could tell what had happened to Gu Mang during the time that he had defected but I assume all of that will be answered in the later books in the series.
I wish I’d had more time to actually devour this book like I wanted to but unfortunately I had to be a responsible adult and actually log on for work but now I’ve got the weekend so I can probably devour the second one! Bring it on!...more

I kind of want to go back to the beginning and start all over again, but at the same time I want to see what the other series that MXTX has written are like!
I loved the political intrigue that this brings to a close, how the different sects try and one up each other, the betrayals and the heartbreaks are just delectable! Who would have thought that Nie Huaisang would be the mastermind behind it all? But what a revenge plot though!
I’m kind of not surprised that Jiang Cheng has ended up as a favourite character of mine from this series, but I do kind of wish that MXTX had written a scene where Wei Wuxian finds out exactly why Jiang Cheng lost his golden core. That broke me when I read that part! How Wei Wuxian saw it as repaying a debt, but Jiang Cheng did it to protect his remaining family?! Yeah, tears were shed.
And those extra scenes that were included! Aw, so cute! I’m kind of sad to leave it behind but at least I can come back to it in the future! ...more

I am just so surprised that I’m enjoying it as much as I actually am! Although, I don’t know why I’m so surprised by that, it’s got loads of things that I love; fantasy elements, moral dilemmas, complex characters and an absolute disaster human being as a main character.
I’m even really enjoying the way the flashback sequences are handled and how even though they can take up large portions of the story, it’s still easy to follow the general gist that MXTX is setting up. The world is such a fascinating one that I really wish there were more books in this series.
Also, can we take a minute to appreciate that the last 25% of this volume is Wei Wuxian essentially pulling a Nick Nelson and having “a full on gay crisis”! Fellas, is it gay to fall in love with the one person you’ve been utterly obsessed with over the course of two lifetimes? Probably, but we forgive him!...more

Anyway! I’m always amazed by how much I am actually enjoying this series, like I always expect it to get to a point that I stop liking it but I don’t actually think that is going to happen. There’s been moments that have actually made me laugh out loud which I absolutely was not expecting but there we have it. And the whole world of cultivation is so interesting, that I actually like reading about the history that has been created for this series.
One of my friends asked me who my favourite character is so far and I don’t think I can answer her honestly. I love them all for different reasons but I think if I absolutely had to choose it would be Wei Wuxian or Wen Ning. My babies. ...more

The books are so funny and I’m still really enjoying the writing style, it’s casual enough that you don’t feel bogged down by the genre but it’s got enough of the formality that you can easily place it as a fantasy piece.
I’m also really enjoying how the flashback sequences are laid out. It’s interesting to show the audience what happens at the same time as showing Wei Wuxian and moving the plot along in that way, but it also it heightening suspense as you are now moving towards understanding why he has to keep his identity a secret.
Also, no one told me that Lan Zhan is so funny in the books?! He’s hysterical! Don’t get me wrong, I’m very much enjoying him in “The Untamed” but he’s so much funnier in the books so far!

But, I’m actually obsessed. LMAO.
Like genuinely, I am obsessed with this world and these characters and I did not expect that at all? It’s such a nice feeling to be utterly obsessed with something like this again and I’m actually grateful to my friends that they made me sit and watch those first few episodes of the show that’s based on these books.
I really like the writing style so far, it’s quite informal so it reads almost like a fanfic but there’s definitely enough to keep you entertained aside from the slightly informal writing style.

This one sees us following Cleric Chih as they return to the Singing Hills Abbey following their journeys and the nights that follow as they try to come to terms with the changes that have taken place since they left.

But, I did find it quite easy to follow on and soon got right back into the swing of the story and the characters.
It was quite nice coming back to these characters again and seeing how they have all been coping since the end of the second book, with all of the various escapades that they got themselves in to. But it does beg the question, where exactly is the adult supervision in these books because how are these kids getting involved in so many murder investigations?!
It does feel like the series has come to an end now, and I feel that if McManus was to come back to these characters then it would be a little too overblown so hopefully she will go on to other stories and characters. ...more

And actually found myself enjoying it.
This is essentially a guide that new Shadowhunters would be given to help them navigate the new and interesting world they find themselves in. It breaks down the history of the Nephilim, the Downworlders, the different types of demons and everything you could ever possibly need to know when fighting the forces of evil all the live long day.
And it was fun seeing it being treated like an actual textbook by Clary and Simon. That’s how a textbook should be treated. A very fun addition to the Shadowhunter Chronicles, if potentially a little redundant. ...more

That’s not to say that I hated the moments with J&E but I did not engage with them as much as say with Mark or Kieran or Helen.
I did very much enjoy the return of Brother Snackariah aka Jem Carstairs aka the love of my life. He should appear in every Shadowhunter book just because I want him there. And seeing Tessa again as incredible.
There was a moment, I think when I started the second part of this book, where I thought that it seemed a little bit like the plot had wandered away. Seeing J&E in Thule would have been really interesting, if it had lasted for more than two or three chapters. It could have led to some really interesting conflict later on down the line.
I do want to know what Cassie has planned for Kit though. I think out of the new characters, he was my favourite even if he spent most of this book trying to stop Ty from doing the most ridiculous thing ever. These Blackthorns and necromancy. It needs to end.
There are a number of characters that I would love to see in future books, but I am not including Julian and Emma on that list. Emma on her own is ok, Emma with anyone other than Julian is great, Julian has about as much personality as a bag of flour and he irritated me. I get that a lot was dumped on him after the Dark War but that does nothing to make me like him sadly. ...more

The plot of this one was a little weird in all honesty. It felt a little disjointed but it was nice to be back in the London Institute for a little while, especially with a little Jessamine cameo which we love to see. While there was definitely plot there, it just felt a little bit off in places? Like we should have been further along in the story than we actually were, if you get what I mean.
I’m also not entirely convinced with all the pairing off that happened in this book. Give me some happy, independent Shadowhunters please and thank you! But I did appreciate the way that Diana’s story was handled and it does help to explain some of the secrets that she has been keeping from the Blackthorns.
I kind of want to keep going with the next book now but seeing as it’s already gone midnight here and I have work in the morning, I don’t think that’s a great idea. I’ll have to come back to the Blackthorn’s in the morning. ...more

It might have something to do with the fact that I couldn’t really vibe with the story like I did with the first one, but I did genuinely think that if I pushed through with it I would be able to push through to the end.
Which I did, because Mama didn’t raise a quitter, but oh boy sometimes I wish she had!
I did not enjoy this as much as the first book, and I am pretty glad that it is just a duology. But to be fair, you could have taken the last third of this book, tacked it on to the end of the first one and you’d have a pretty solid standalone story. The first two thirds felt like you weren’t getting anywhere with the plot and then suddenly you had plot being shoved down your throat. Which is not the best reader experience to be having.
I also didn’t really vibe with Amora in this one either. I get that she’s dealing with grief and the fact that she’s now the queen and the fact that her soul has been split in half, but I just couldn’t bring myself to feel any sympathy for her at all.
I don’t know why, but I thought I wouldn’t enjoy this one as much as I have enjoyed some of the otherUm, hello?! Miss Clare??!! What is that ending?!
I don’t know why, but I thought I wouldn’t enjoy this one as much as I have enjoyed some of the other books in the Shadowhunters universe, but once I actually got into the story it was just as entertaining as the previous stories.
Im intrigued to see how Kit is going to factor in to the other books of this trilogy. There’s been such a focus on the “Lost Herondale” in the short stories that I thought he would be a much bigger focus in this story but to bring him in at the end does mean that I will be carrying on with the series just to see what happens to him.
Also Malcolm?! Did I see that coming? I mean kind of but it was still a bit of a shock to actually see it all spelled out. And to be considering sacrificing Octavian?! Not cool Malcolm.

I don’t exactly know what it was about this book that drew me to it, whether it was the atmospheric cover design or the promise of a nice, spooky read but I am quite glad that I picked it up. Its definitely not my most favourite book but it was a good time and I appreciate that about it.
Pearl and Mabel are really nice characters to read about and I enjoyed how the House itself ended up taking a huge role in creating the creepy atmosphere throughout the book. The isolated location of the House would surely help with that as well.
The pacing of the story made it start out a bit slow, which I didn’t mind too much and it definitely picked up the pace as you got into it but I did find the big climax to be a bit predictable but there were a fair amount of clues in the text so potentially the author meant it that way. ...more

But luckily I was able to get my hands on it and continue my deep and abiding love for Miss Miller.
It is only a short story, about 10 pages long I believe, but it’s another example of the lyrical quality of Miller’s work. Of how beautifully she writes these characters and how well she understands the original works that these characters originate from.
The abruptness of the ending really points out how alone Philocetes really is at the end of the story. Odysseus is gone, so are the troops and they have left him to die. Maybe they thought he was dead already. But imagine how abruptly that realisation would take you out at the knees.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually gasped out loud whilst reading a book before, and this book had me doing it so many times I lost count! It was actually a great way to say goodbye to Kady, Ezra, Hanna, Nik & Ella, and even got to throw a couple of new guys in to the mix as well.
This series is a really great introduction to sci-fi, especially if your looking at the genre and trying to decide whether it is the genre for you and if you haven’t read anything in that genre before it can be quite difficult to know where to start. But this was a good place to start. I don’t think I’d make the jump to reading purely sci-fi or anything, but at least I’ve got more of a sense of the genre that I didn’t have before.
But at the same time it feels very socialist? I don’t know whether that makes any sense to anyone but me, but it’s a very socialist text despite it being all about space warfare and planetary colonialism and the like.
And it’s another classic series finally ticked off of my tbr! Now I get to delete the files from my kindle and maybe watch my poor kindle take a breath as the memory space becomes available again. (Or I just need to get myself a new kindle, who knows).
