That's when I saw a ton of people slamming her for it, but I was wondering.. don't they know how ghostwriting works? Katherine McGurl was most likely paid substantially for the job and accepted the conditions of having Millie's name on her work, so I don't really see the issue ...more

Where do I start with this book? The Nightingale is one of the most engrossing and masterfully written stories I have read in a long time. It's the story of two sisters and the circumstances they find themselves in during Word War II, as the Germans invade France.
Vianne and Isabelle couldn't be more different from one another, but they find one thing in common in these most difficult times - courage. Each woman makes a stand against the invaders of their homeland: Vianne has to protect her family at all costs, while Isabelle fights on a much larger scale against their invaders. (what I find most fascinating is the fact that Isabelle and her actions are inspired by a real historical figure, a Belgian woman who aided many airmen and helped them escape)
This book covers the span of the German invasion and depicts the hardships and atrocities that were part of it. I learned in school about the WWII, but no one ever talked about anything else other than the political and military side of it. I never truly knew the effects it had on the population, or about the role women played in a war. I can only applaud the people who gave so much to help their families, friends and even strangers during such a horrendous time in history!
The Nightingale is a wonderful reading experience that evokes so many emotions from hopefulness and admiration to joy and grief. A story about redemption and the power of love in its many forms. I don't remember when I have last been so moved!...more
