Not offically a Lost Lit book, but it really should be. It's a pretty cool concept. Scientists try to rebuild the same situations that took place to create the Big Bang, and when they push the button to start the experiment, everyone in the world loses consciousness and jumps into their future selves for almost two minutes. The visions, or lack of, that they experience shape their actions and thoughts for the next twenty years.
Two complaints...
The author uses the word "doubtless" an amazingly annoying amount of times. I counted at least ONCE per page. So we are talking a minium of 320 times. Somebody get Sawyer a thesaurus.... for the love of all things literature!
The ending was ... meh. For me, it certainly didn't end the way I wanted it to.
For those reasons, it recvd 4 stars. And it may have even gotten a 5th star from me had the author not overused Doubtless... "Doubtless she thought...." "He doubtless spent time..."
over and over and over and over and over and over.... ...more
It reads quite quickly. And is very reminiscent of "Hope For the Flowers", in that it works very well as a childrens story, but holds a much deeper story for adults. It's the tale of a little prince who came to the African Desert from a star, or little planet. He meets up with a man who has crashed his plane there, and shares his tales of adventure.
Quite a few Lost goodies to be found here. A plane crash, a well in the middle of nowhere, and the fact that both the narrator and little prince land in the African Desert (almost as if it has pulled them there)........more

This is a quiet southern story about a single father and his two kids. It's about growing up. Learning how the world works. Standing up for yourself, and your friends, and your neighbors. It's about believing in what's right, and not following the crowd.

I did not like all the lost trains of thought. The narrator would lead you towards an answer, or explanation and then veer off for pages and pages, almost seeming to have lost his orginal point.
I did not like the ending at all. Perhaps my copy is missing the last few pages?? (sadly, i know this is not the case....)...more

I hadnt thought about it again until I became a fan of Lost, and was made aware of its connection to the show.
I strongly believe this is a novel that everyone should read at some point in their lives. Its not just a novel about talking rabbits who have adventures. Its a novel about a group of individuals, each with his own strengths and weaknesses, who are determined to survive.
Amazingly well written, Adams is cleverly able to combine humanlike traits with the natural essense of a wild animal and leave us turning page after page after page.......more

But I really didnt get it. I was confused most of the time, and had to force myself to finish it in two days, as there was no way I would allow myself to drag out such a short novel for much longer than that.
Am I the only person who wasnt impressed with it? I understood the premise. Marlow lands himself on a steamer and heads into dark territory to find and rescue Mr. Kurtz. He encounters some angry natives, hires cannibals as his crew, and even watches a man die, bleeding into his shoes. But wow. What a tough read. I felt lost at times, and couldnt really locate a connection to the show Lost.. so it was a double whammy for me.
I think I am just relieved that I have read it and can add it to my bookshelf....more

Speaking ouAlices Adventures in Wonderland: While reading the this book, I caught myself thinking multiple times that Alice is quite a spoiled child. Speaking out of turn, sarcastic and snippy at times. It makes me wonder about Carroll's daughter, who the character of Alice was said to have been based on. Though the books is written as a dream, it's more lucid and trippy than that. The placement of "drinks", "mushrooms", mood altering "pepper", and the catapillars "pipe/smoking" has always leaned, for me, more towards a drug induced trip. Perhaps I am the only one that sees this?
Through the Looking Glass: Yup. A total flashback! I did like the question at the end... was it her dream or the red kings dream?????
For Lost fans, I found a connection between the Looking Glass and the show. It's been a long running theory for Lost that time traveling/ flashbacks occur around or in contact with water. Last season, Desmond mental trips through time appeared to interact with water, and highly supported this theory. In the rain when he was on the military base, in the bathroom after talking to widmore while the sink water was running..... In the Looking Glass, every time Alice crossed over water, she found herself transported into a different place, with no knowledge of how she got there or what she was doing. Not to mention the fact that the characters in the book failed to use water, or liquid of any kind, to counteract Alice's thirst!!

I really enjoyed this one. I was able to read it in 2 days without feeling like I rushed through it. His writing just flows off the page, and into your head.

Before I begin, let me warn you. ***DO NOT READ THE INTRODUCTION UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE READ THE NOVEL** I made the mistake of reading the intro first, Before I begin, let me warn you. ***DO NOT READ THE INTRODUCTION UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE READ THE NOVEL** I made the mistake of reading the intro first, and that intro contains a spoiler. It gave away the entire premise of the novel. So I feel like I was gyped a bit here.
That being said, even tho I read the novel knowing the outcome, it didnt ruin the story for me at all.
TTP is hung up on de Selby (who is this dude?) some of his theories. Here are a few that really interested me: He felt that roads have a distinct direction they travel in. And you can feel if you are traveling them in the correct direction. Also, he believes that when you look in a mirror, you see a younger version of yourself. and if you take two mirrors and face them into themselves, where they reflect endless reflections, you will be able to see youself grow younger and younger thru each reflection. These are not touched very much in the novel, but were unique enough in and of themselves that I felt I would mention them.
And then there is the whole sharing atoms thing. This is a point of focus throughout the novel: If you ride a bicycle too often, pcs of the bike get passed into you, and you into it. Thus making a bike act humanish and a human act bikeish, until there is no way to tell the difference between the two. Same goes for the road. If you walk too much, you loose pcs of yourself to the road, and the road comes into you..... Still with me?
Overall, the book grips the reader and refuses to let go. It is creepy, confusing, and a touch haunting. I may have to pick up more from this author if they are written anything like this one!...more

I am so glad I read this one. Took me about 11 days, it's a little slow, and very technically detailed, but totally worth the hard work! If I knew I were going to be stranded on a deserted Island, I would make sure this book came with me! Its almost like a survivalists guide.....
One question tho, Verne covered every single aspect of how they lived day in and day out, what they did every second of every day, and never once touched on this topic... Where were the colonists bathrooms?!!

It was just ok for me. I am not sure what i was expecting, but this novel just didnt even come close. Basically, I feel like I read an essay by Huxley on what he felt the perfect society was. The only reason it is a 'novel' is becuase he created characters to explain it all to us.
There was no meat in this storyline, no real action or emotions to really build on, or to get you involved with the characters. It was hard to pick up once it was put down.
I will say I am glad Ive read it. And I thought the ending was interesting.
And thats really all i can say. Not for the light reader!...more

Joined Sawyers Book Club, and they chose this as thier first group read, so I went out, grabbed a copy, and started reading.
I really should learn my lesson with YA novels, and rereads. Yas are just not my cup of tea anymore. And rereading a novel, even one that I dont remember a thing about, seems to ruin the original opinion i had of it :(
Overall, its not a bad concept, and was probably quite unique in its time. A couple kids run into a couple weird old ladies who can tesser (time travel) them to thier father, who is currently fighting, and losing, a battle against an Evil alien entity.
The link I see here to the show Lost that was most glaring is the fact that two of the kids are sort of 'special' (aka Walt) and that the whole idea of time and playing with it is one that is coming in to the bigger picture of the show.
This should definetly be read by the younger generation, while they are still young enough to appreciate it!...more

I found myself turning page after page follwing the de-evolution of the boys on the island. The only thing that threw me for a loop is that we really have no idea how long those boys were stranded there on the island for. Long enough for the clothes to tatter, and the hair to get into thier eyes.... But I would have liked a better time frame. It seemed that the 'bad'kids became savages quite quickly.
I dont own a copy of this, but i know i had to read it for school back in the day. Not a bad book, just something i wouldnt have read otherwise.

This series was really really good. I didnt know how i was going to like it, not being a practicing catholic and all, but even if it doesnt keep to scripture 100%, it gives you enough of an eye-opener....
I remember thinking, wow. If this really happened, i would be one of the ones suffering through all this. And what would it take for me turn and accept god....how many plauges and tribuations would i suffer through....
You get to see how the whole world gets affected by this transition period, where the antichrist fights for his throne and god is ever angry.... a war between good and bad....
Its long, theres so many books to this series, but if you are the least bit interested in what life would be like once god takes his chosen ones, and the rest of the world is left to fight off the devil/ antichrist.... give it a whirl.
