This was chosen for House Salt Book Club, and we chose to read the duology in its entirety to talk about it as one story, and it very obviously feels that it should be discussed that way. I think that was a good choice on our part. I was really excited to further explore the sci-fi elements in this sequel. While we definitely dove more into that aspect, it wasn't in the way that I was expecting and excited for. I was really looking for more sci-fi and more aliens and more outside Earth content than we ended up getting. I still enjoyed this duology as a whole. I definitely think it should be read as one complete story, rather and in parts.
I find this really hard to rate as an individual novel because it is obviously a part of one larger story. It didn't feel fake or forced or inauthentic in any way, like some other novels I've read have encountered. Furthermore, this first contact story reminds me deeply of one of my favorite series of all time, the Themis Files. Had I heard this compared to that series at any point since it's release, I would have immediately added it to my TBR. I'm excited to explore the sci-fi elements further in the sequel....more

I can’t even begin to write the ways in which I was disappointed by this read because it would be forever long. I did post a video to my YouTube channel chronically my reading. I would direct you there to hear my in-depth thoughts because, man, I hated this.
What a powerful examination and exploration of what it means to be human.
I didn’t find this installment to be as action packed and fast paced as the What a powerful examination and exploration of what it means to be human.
I didn’t find this installment to be as action packed and fast paced as the first two installments. However, I was almost brought to tears while listening to the audiobook driving to work. I was so moved and touched by the father/daughter relationship in this novel. It just pulled at my heartstrings in such a raw and authentic way.
I highly highly recommend this series on audiobook. It was just made to be performed and digested via a narrative performance. The full cast did such a phenomenal job.
I cannot wait to see what other kind of science fiction stories this author comes out with in the future. ...more

We definitely took a turn in this book plot wise that I wasn’t expecting. We actually took a lot of turns I wasn’t expecting. There was so much that surprised and had me 😱 while listening, which again, these audiobooks are just downright incredible. There was actually a scene that had me on the verge of tears because the voice actors were just conveying the emotion so well. I felt like I was in the moment with these characters experiencing the same emotions that they were feeling.
I will say that there were a lot of info dumps along the way in this installment. A pretty heavy science component comes into play and a lot of jargon and explanation were thrown in there. I wasn’t bothered by it though because it felt natural to the chain of events. Like, if you were documenting a research mission or trying to pitch a plan to the military, all of this information would be exchanged in real life.
I did have two very little gripes. Number one, the ten year old character did not sound ten. Her voice actor was obviously not ten, and she was obviously written by an adult. Nothing about her felt natural or authentic. Number two, there is a torture scene that was a little too much, a little too well acted, in the audiobook. So, be warned.
In the end, I cannot wait to listen to book 3, and I shall be doing so immediately. ...more

I was absolutely enthralled with this This audiobook was incredible. Definitely one of my favorite audiobook performances that I’ve ever listened to.
I was absolutely enthralled with this story. I was so engrossed that all the sudden we were at the epilogue, and I couldn’t believe how fast the story flew by. I loved the case file/dossier style of the narrative. Somewhat similar to that of the Illuminae Files by Kaufman and Kristoff, which I absolutely loved. I feel like there is still so much secrecy and unsolved mysteries. I can’t wait to unravel the story more. Once the epilogue ended, I was shooketh in my boots. I cannot wait to jump into the next book.
I also think this is a great way to dip your toes into science fiction, if you’re not a frequent sci-fi reader. It definitely had space and aliens and futuristic technology, but not so out of this world to not be fathomable. ...more

ItAll the reviews I’m seeing seem to be genuinely upset with Adam’s behavior. It seems this is work that truly pushed Adam into the dirtbag category. It was the point Mafi gave up and actively tried to sabotage the relationship, as well.
However, I’ve always though Adam was a little turd. He’s never been a character I’ve rooted for or liked or trusted. So, nothing in here surprised me. I’ve always thought it was a doodoo bird.
I’m also not entirely sure the point of this novella. It seems like Mafi had to write this scene to make the next book make sense, but this couldn’t be included in Unravel Me because it’s not from Juliette’s perspective. But, it seems like really crucial and pertinent information to the story.
So basically it’s a necessary sequence to understand the arc of the series, but from the perspective of a turdhole; thus couldn’t be included in the actual novel.

I don't know how many people compare this book to A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas by way of the feels it invokes with the love triangle. It doesn't even come close. Not even a fraction. I still just do not understand the love and obsession and feelings Warner has for Juliette. I feel like they were built on straw, not bricks. The whole basis of their relationship is show, show, show, and I need some tell. That is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to relationship building in books. I need to shown with actions and decisions, not just told with descriptions.
I think I enjoyed this one more than the first book. It was harder for me to get through and took longer to read, but I did appreciate the characters more. I felt like they were more grounded and flushed out. They didn't feel as much like props to Juliette's internal monologue.
I do plan to continue on with Ignite Me. I can't say if I'll continue with the series beyond the initial three books, but I do intend to finish out the trilogy. I'm still very much interested in the Warnette storyline, which was the whole reason I picked up this series in the first place. So, I'm excited to see how that continues to play out in the next book....more

Wow, well. I have some very complicated feelings about this book.
First of all, I love the concept. It’s this very cool mashup of Indiana Jones, Temple Run, and Lara Croft. We have two teens, on an alien planet, trying to navigate temples, looking for treasure. It 100% should have facilitated action-movie level suspense and adventure. Unfortunately, I really was bored for the first half of this book. It took me 2 months to read the first 150 pages, but less than a week to read the second 150. I kept putting it down in favor of other things. Maybe, I was just too distracted to really get into it. But that second half man, that was good.
I am so stumped and confused by the ending, in a good way. A revelation is made that makes no sense with what we know about this world, and our main characters are just as flabbergasted by what they learn. I am dying (haha that’s a pun) to find out the secrets of the Undying in book 2 because it just doesn’t seem to make sense. That was such a mighty impressive cliffhanger.
I would have liked to see more of the trials and boobytraps in the temple. We all know I love a good clue, scavenger hunt, puzzle to figure out. I felt like we could spent a little more time there. But the whole vibe of those scenes reminded me so much of final scenes of National Treasure, and I was living for it.
Which brings me to my final point, this would make a fantastic movie. If this adaptation is done right, this would be an EPIC action-adventure movie. It would be Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft, and how can you not want that?
Thus, my biggest complaint was the pacing. I felt the beginning portion moved just too slowly for something that hinged on so much action. I wanted to be held in suspense more and longer than I was. I still CANNOT wait for the sequel/conclusion though. ...more

I really don't know how to rate this.
I found a majority of the book very slow. I was uninspired to pick it up. I fell asleep often while reading it. However, the last 10% or so was amazing. I was hooked. I needed to know how this story was going to end. Upon finishing it, I also found myself very glad that a potential sequel was in the works. So, a majority of the book I found to be too slow; but, I loved the end and want more.... I felt very similarly about This Savage Song, another of this author's works.
As I sit here typing, I think I realized what my problem is with Schwab's writing. She writes very character heavy novels. It's more about the characters and there struggles and relationships with one another than the plot. So, I end up struggling with a majority of the book because I prefer plot to characters. But when she finally drops the plot in, it's like a whole new experience and I love what she does with the story. Again comparing this to TSS, I had the same issue. I just had a reader revelation, and you witnessed it here first.
So with that being said, I really enjoyed Victor as a character and his motley crew. I loved their dynamic, and their interactions with the members of the opposite "team." A lot of this didn't come into play though until later in the novel. I wasn't completely invested in them until their lives and wellbeing were at stake (aka, hello plot). I also thought there was some fantastic conversation about what it means to be a hero and a villain, or a monster and a human, or on the side of right or wrong. Schwab plays with our expectations of what it means to be each of these things. She makes you root for an unconventional hero. I felt the same way about TSS. I love the way she challenges stereotypes and literary tropes. Again though, a lot of this isn't necessarily fully flushed out until later in the story.
I guess that means that I will have to resign myself to struggling through most of the book for the last part that I really love. I can acknowledge the craft and the talent of Schwab's writing; but for me, I need a little bit more plot to come in a little bit earlier to really grab my attention. I've never read a work by her that has a published sequel, so I am curious to see how the balance between plot and character develops in subsequent novels in the same world.
I cannot wait to have another novel about Victor Vale though. I find him to be such a complex and rich character....more

Much like the first volume, I loved seeing the repercussions of Levana's rule on the people of Earth and Luna. It just creates the most epic resolution to this series. It is so much more conclusion than you normally get for a series, and I have just appreciated every minute of it. Iko is a fantastic character to follow. Her wit and sass and humor are perfectly captured on the page, feeling very authentic to the original novels. In fact, all the characters felt authentic to the original works, and all the humor was immensely well done. I was constantly snickering to myself. I have loved spending more time with the Rampion crew throughout the two graphic novels as well.
I would say that if you are a diehard fan and love this series and haven't yet read these graphic novels, then you are missing out on valuable content and a good time.
I will say that I wasn't entirely thrilled with the artistic rendering of many of the characters. I don't think they fit well with what I had in my head, and that was a little disappointing from time to time. That definitely bothered me more than the monochromic art style of the novel. I wish they looked more authentic to the descriptions in the books. They felt authentic, but did not look it in my opinion. ...more

I listened to this via audiobook while following along in the physical book. I found that there were some sketchbook/drawing entries that were (obviously) excluded from the audio in the other books, and this made sure I did not miss anything. I also really enjoyed seeing how the audiobook translated all the various plays on text and word placing that Amie and Jay did within the novel.
As a conclusion, this was one of my favorites. I really enjoyed the final two main perspectives that were added in this installment. Each book follows a newly introduced "couple;" and this time around, we meet Asha and Rhys. I absolutely loved the new storyline with these two. We finally got a look into the Kerenza colony that we had been hearing so much about for the past two books. They also had the amazing dynamic of being ex-lovers with criminal pasts. They were such an amazing addition to the crew. I have really enjoyed all the perspectives and characters. Amie and Jay did a great job of creating six distinct, well-rounded characters that were all lovable.
I would highly recommend this trilogy. I cannot wait to see what these two co-author next. They have teased a future book together in the next few years, and you bet I'll be picking that sucker up immediately....more

You always wonder, or at least I do, what happens after the big battle, the big revolution. Sometimes you get a nice resolution and epilogue, sometimes you don't. I felt Winter gave a very satisfying resolution to the story, but this was even better! I love that we're following Iko's perspective. She was always one of my favorites. I also thought the humor and dialogue were spot on, very true and authentic to the novels. I've never had good luck with graphic novels, but this is what is feels like to enjoy a graphic novel.
