I haven't read any of the previous novels from this series so I didn't care much for some of the background details about the characters. Even so, I felt like this could definitely be read as a standalone mystery.
A Bitter Feast is the kind of mystery that you'd want to read on a cold autumn day while snuggled up indoors by the fireplace (a light mystery without too much suspense or twists). This book is set in the fall and starts with Detective Superintendent Kincaid getting into a car accident on his way to a relaxing weekend in the Cotswold villages. He and his family gets pulled into a mystery when they find out that one of the passengers in the wreck was already dead before the crash. How did it happen? Who is this mysterious dead passenger and why is he dead?
Overall, I really enjoyed this mystery and thought many of the characters were interesting. Also, one of the detectives is called Booth so I couldn't help but picture: [image]
Congratulations, winner for the 2019 Goodreads Choice Awards for Graphic Novels & Comics!
I'm honestly a bit bummed that They Called Us Enemy didn't win but out of all the other comics that made it to the finals, this definitely would have been my second choice.
First of all, I absolutely loved the illustrations.Faith Erin Hicks did a wonderful job portraying the characters' expressive facial expressions. The pacing of the panels were perfect, and the fall tones in the colour palette that the illustrator used was fantastic.
The chemistry and dialogue between the two characters, Deja and Josiah was also great (view spoiler)[I felt that their chemistry worked really well as friends and kind of wished this book focused more on their friendship rather than turning it into something more... (hide spoiler)]. It's their last day working at the Pumpkin Patch before going to college and they want to make their last day memorable. So they abandon their posts at the Succotash Hut while Deja goes above and beyond to help Josiah gain the courage to speak to his seasonal crush.
This is definitely a great book to read in the fall and a book that I would love to add to my collection!...more
