5/12/20: I requested Emily Wilson’s translation from the library and I plan on reading while the story and lectures are still fresh in my mind! I’m very excited.
6/15/20: it was definitely a good choice to read Wilson’s translation now, only a few weeks after I read Fagles’ because I was able to read with the lectures fresh in my mind and remembering enough to recognize how the language is different from Fagles’. She mentions in her Translator’s Note that she decided to use today’s language because a translation from a few decades ago is no closer to the original Ancient Greek than it would be and it makes a desired effect. Not only was this edition an engaging read for me but I also think it would benefit first time readers who are unfamiliar with the story. I also appreciated her introduction as she brings up academics’ viewpoints on different portions of The Odyssey (xenophobia, sexism etc.) that I hadn’t known about before. I recommend! ...more
