I got this recommendation from a friend who loves dark and monster romances. The closest thing I've ever got to a monster romance were Vampires and Werewolves but.... here I am reading about Dustwalkers...
When I first read about orbs I thought this story was going to be.... well... badly written... but the author did that intentionally which made sense later on but still.... its ingrained in me to cringe every time I hear or read the word "orbs." Unfortunately for my own conscious and sanity... that's why this book is at a 4 stars and not a 5... i just.... I couldn't... But nonetheless this was a great story!
Rhea was a wonderfully strong character and I loved her in every moment. The hesitation to be with a humanoid being, the loneliness she felt but got used to, the guilt from surviving all her passed loved ones. UGHHHHH she was such a great character.
And Orpheus was a great character as well. The author did a great job at making us he his inner human thoughts despite being a "monster" and even when he lost himself to his animal or... beastly (?) hunger he did his best to make it seem like that there was so much more depth to him.
AND THE ROMANCE AND SMUT???? Bro I couldn't tell you HOW LONG it's been since I've read some smut like what was in this book. It wasn't overdoing the dirty talk to the point where it became cringe worthy and the descriptions and writing.... omg it was top tier... I had to stop for a while lol. Moving to the romance, it was so genuinely sweet as we see two characters who were desperately lonely find companions with the other and see that blossom into so much more.
Ughhhh this was so good and I'm so glad I bought the first four books in this series... I'll definitely be reading more from this author within the coming years.

This is a pretty good book for beginners, but you can tell the author has never written fantasy before. The world building is elementary/surface level, and it's not very good considering there's dragons. The romance was ok, but it's very cookie cutter bad boy who's misunderstood meets good girl who's trying to be rebellious. I originally rated this 4 stars because I did enjoy it but after talking with my buddy read I could really see the flaws of this book.
Usually for 3.5 I would round up to 4 stars but.... I don't want to be nice ...more

To be honest my brain isn't working well at the moment so idk how cohesive my review will be but I'll try my best. The story was amazing. I loved the relationship between Khalid and Shahrzad and how it was enemies to lovers but it almost felt like instant love at times. The reason could be because it was a duology but idk... I felt like Shazi didn't even make an attempt on the mans life despite hating him for murdering his bff...
Like even I would've tried poisoning him or something.... but whatever, nevetheless I thought they were pretty balanced. Shazi was outspoken and bold while Khalid was observant and pretty quiet.. but man was never timid and his character was better than Shazi's imo.
Khalid had so much character and I'm sad we didn't see things from his POV as much as we saw them from Shazi's... I get it was intentional since he's supposed to come off as mysterious but the fact that he's so young and comes off as a tyrant despite not having much power in his own court due to uh... reasons... was actually really interesting and I wanted to know so much more about him. His backstory was especially chef's kiss ngl... I'm going to sound a bit mean for saying this lol but his trauma... ONG that made me like his character even more.
Tariq can kiss my toes because how's this man gonna start a whole rebellion without confirming the woman he still loves, loves him back.... how embarrassing for him.... he's loyal and a overall good guy but omg at times he came off as arrogant, prideful, and impulsive and no offense but impulsive people do not make good leaders.... they just don't...
Shazi was great as well but I don't have much to say about her. I love how much empathy she has with everyone despite coming off as a bit mean and I could really feel the internal struggle she had with falling in love with the dude who killed her bff but.... idk it felt like she did a wholeeee lot of nothing when it came to revenge so...
I knocked off half a star for that and the fact that it took a bit for me to engage with the story... the beginning honestly felt the author was info dumping and I saw lost for several paragraphs... I probably didn't know who was who until like 10% in.
Either way I'm excited to read the sequel. ...more

I remember loving it in high school, and now I know why! All of the characters, the overall cult plot points, the glamous vibes of the roaring 1920s.. UGHHH, WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE!
Evie and Theta are probably my favorite characters because of how brave they both are in going against the standard quo but I also relate to Mabel so much ...more

Like no offense but there was barely any plot in this book and I felt like this could've been 250 pages if so many unnecessary things were cut out.
I really did like Auren's character development tho. It seems like that was the whole point of this book, to further Auren's development and to help her get out of the cage she was groomed into.
