Now, this book isn't by any means perfect, but it was as interesting as I remember. I first heard about this series through the tv show and got the whole series for Christmas. I read that entire series in one weekend lmao. I was hooked on this series when I was young. It was very much mean girl vibes and was hooking me in similar to Gossip Girl.
The contrast between the two sisters is probably the most interesting thing about the book as it really forces you to see two different perspectives and two different actions. Emma being more sympathetic and meek, and Sutton being more confident and unapologetic.
As I said, this book wasn't perfect and read very much as a YA book. Nevertheless, it was a fun read....more

I was expecting it to be a bit darker since I've heard it was a dark romance but I'm not mad about it... Both characters were amazing and I really liked how Sloane and Rowan interacted with each other. The banter was something I never thought I needed till reading it and the audiobook was absolute topppp tierrrrr audiobook. This is a book where I would definitely recommend the audiobook over the physical one.
Going back to the characters, I like how their trauma didn't defy them. we see Sloane suffer from it a bit in the beginning as she seems to be overly dependent on her friend Lark, but I loved how much she grew during her friendship and eventual romance with Rowan. As for Rowan, it seems like he was already pretty well developed from the beginning, but there was once lapse on where he got super violent.... I kinda wish we got more of that throughout the story as I know overcoming abuse and trying to control emotions like anger is a challenge. But I loved him anyway, and I assume why he was more stable was because unlike Sloane, Rowan had the support of his brothers... also, he was like Dexter by putting those negative emotions into killing people ig lol.
I really enjoyed this book and I'm glad my friend recommended it to me.. I can't wait to start the sequel!!
Edit: After really sitting on it, imma lower my rating to 4.5 because idk what it is, but there was something that really nagged me when it came to this book... it was a bit draggy and times, and the more I sit on it, the more I let it fester so..... now...
This story was wild... it reminds me of an episode of Criminal Minds, I loved it.

I usually don't care for thrillers as I'm a world building fantasy girly but even I can't resist a good true crime podcast do when I picked this book up so many years ago I was instantly hooked on the story. Coming back to it now, I understand why I was so hooked. The main characters have such fascinating backgrounds and I loved how their backgrounds influenced their thought process and the relationship they had with each other.
Bell was such a sweetheart, and you can tell he is a neutral good kinda character. I felt like having him in the story really balanced out the other serial killers lol.
Then there was Emma. That girl is a survivor and I'm not sure what to make of her character... I feel like she's kinda a chaotic good but her internal struggle with being the sole survivor of a mass kidnapping and murder group then having to work with the minds that made her into a sole survivor is tough. But I feel like her uncertainty and struggle is what makes her real. Nobody who goes through that is put though it again should feel like they need to be 100% ok. They should be feeling uncertain, insecure, sad, etc because they're no longer the person they were before the tragedy occurred. But what I liked about Emma is that she did her best to not make that the determining factor in who she was going to become, uncertainty be damned. I also really liked her relationship with Simon as that reminded me of Silence of the Lambs.
And Simon... who df knows what up with him..... that bitch is psycho.. but his scenes were by far the most entertaining! The only thing that sucked is that the author didn't delve more into Simon's mental state or character... all throughout the story, he was like a mystery... since there's a 2nd book, I'm assuming that's why, but I hope the author shows us more of his characteristics and motivations.
Overall, it was a fantastic story that kept me engaged and that ending WAS FUCKING WILDDDDD like I was scared for Bell and Emma. ...more
I don't know if this even classifies as a dark romance but this was..... sigh.... perfection in its own twisted way.
Now, some moments did come off as I don't know if this even classifies as a dark romance but this was..... sigh.... perfection in its own twisted way.
Now, some moments did come off as a bit outlandish, but I don't think that took away from the story overall. The story is brutal, and I love how the author chose to tell the story in a badass revenge kind of way because not many people know how to write revenge stories.
Like fr... people on this earth make them fall in love with the person who ruins, and it lowkey puts me off from the story altogether. The only GOOD revenge stories I've seen so far are this story and Revenge the ABC TV show...
BUT BACK TO THE BOOK! Lana and Logan were my absolute favorite characters, Lana especially. She was so strong but so vulnerable at the same time. The author did a perfect job imo by balancing out the hurt and anger of the character after what happened and how those emotions drove her to execute her plan. Then there's Logan. I feel like in a way, he was this naive character who only saw the black and white, but through learning Lana's story he could see just how gray the world could be in terms of behavior, ethics, and morals. Because the world isn't 100% good or evil, and the author did a fantastic job at really trying to get Logan and the readers to understand that.
And tbh.... I wouldn't need much convincing, tbh considering I see myself as a chaotic good or chaotic neutral kind of person.
I support a woman's rights BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY I SUPPORT THEIR WRONGS (even tho in my eyes she did no wrongs)!...more

I now know why the people of Booktok recommend this series so much! It was amazing and definitely reminded me of the tv show Criminal Minds. I never felt bored while listening to this book and the main character was great, even if she was angsty at times.
What I mean by that is how it seems like the FMC only really cared about her mother... respectfully, after spending so many years with a tight-knit family there's no reason why the FMC couldn't love them... that shit didn't make sense and only seemed to come to light to make the FMC more "edgy" Like girl BSFFR....
I will say I did like the criminal justice and forensics that went into this as our rag-tag team of FBI wannabes (don't ask me if its meant to be an insult or not..... cuz honestly the whole team are a bunch of nerds) was made up of a murder victims child, a human lie-detector, Hannibals son (ig), a human encyclopedia and statics machine, and the prodigal son of a conman. What a pair they were.... they were depressing and if I was a teenager I probably would've loved them even more but as an adult... lowkey a was a bit over their BS. However... I will say I enjoyed the banter between the entire lot... It's especially funny whenever Dean gets mad as that guy kinda reminds me of a robot... Ik he's traumatized but guy needs to learn how to chill and be a kid. DX
I won't speak on the love triangle as I have a feeling Dean will win but.... Michael is who I'm rooting for rn...
Nevertheless I really enjoyed the group of nerds and the plot twists that went on through the end of the book had me GAGGED. Like ya girl was speechless.... I never felt so damn DUMB then when I was reading this book ONG. I never cared much for thrillers and am not a thriller person so I usually save my noggin for fantasy world building... not for mind games.... but I'm not mad about it and enjoyed the twists the story gave.
I hope to start the second book soon (Libby... when I catch you Libby... Gimme that damn book off of my holds) I'll definitely start it ASAP.
Also... this is a spoiler so I'll cover it (view spoiler)[ Lowkey justice for Lacey.... she was delt a shit life card and Lorelai should've taken her as there's no way she was ignorant as to what would've happened after she escaped that house... as a fellow elder sister.. I'm ashamed of her. (hide spoiler)] ------- Predictions for future books: Cassie's mom was killed by 1. Cassie's dad 2. Dean's dad...more

Yeah... no. If I give this a rating for only 33% I'm going to be harsher than I will now so....
Reasons I dropped this:
● "Not like other girls" cringe Yeah... no. If I give this a rating for only 33% I'm going to be harsher than I will now so....
Reasons I dropped this:
● "Not like other girls" cringe troupe ● blonde hair, blue-blue eyes Mary Sue (she may not be but I couldn't gaf to stick around) ● Food comparison to women... like why df would anyone like to be compared to an onion? AN ONION ● negatively compares other women to FMC even tho she's not much to read about herself. ● BORING! LIKE THIS IS A THRILLER.... THILL ME

I was really into part one since the two characters were working through their "hatred" and coming together as a survival instinct but.... I didn't like how the author kinda glazed over Dean's trauma in the second part... not to mention that weird spice scene towards the end of part 1.... I don't mind dark romance but idk if this one is for me... I'll probably come back to it one day... if I have nothing else to read ...more

My enjoyment: I got through this book pretty quickly. The mystery behind the grandmas death, the thrilling elements of Addy being targeted for human trafficking and stalked, Zade going into the monsters den while being a creep himself. I won't lie, I was entertained.
The spice: ngl the spice in this one was subpar... like, the dude had a big weiner, and that's it... idk what the spice was in this, but... I've read better ...more
