This book reminded me of Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, and I felt like it belonged on Wattpad. It was so cliche that it was funny, keeping me from rating it as 1 star. I got a good laugh out of some scenes but the "romance" and the diction used like FML, AF, and WTF made me want to keep pausing the audio because absolutely nobody talks or thinks in text language. The only characters I liked were Flint and Macy. They weren't as cringy-worthy as the rest of the characters and I really liked their characterization. The rest? Burn. It. Burn it.

I may give book 2 a chance only because of Flint and nobody else.
I'm surprised this series even got a special edition.......more

You're telling me this books starts and ends with When I first started this book I knew almost nothing about it but man did it start off with a bang. You're telling me this books starts and ends with a war? AND IT HAS TWO FMCS?! Count me in! While the dual POVs could be somewhat confusing as the worlds they lived in were completely different it meant that I wasn't bored for too long. Some dual POVs really struggle to keep me interested as being set in the same world more often than not means I'm being fed the same info twice but seeing as our two FMCs are in different millenniums that means different characters, different scenarios, and different worlds so I loved the dual POVs.
I will say that Rielle's POV is a lot better than Eliana as its a bit more action packed but knowing where she'll end up makes me sad. Seeing a few reviews I came to know just how morally grey both FMCs will be and seeing Rielle getting turned into a villain makes me wonder just what happens to her to make her turn from the man and kingdom she desperately hoped to gain love from. Seeing her backstory it's not hard to see why she could turn out to be a villain but throughout the story you could see her trying so hard to be good and she's often very scared. Not of her powers, but of the people around her as she seems to be very insecure about peoples feeling (which is understandable considering her backstory again) and seems to think that people who love her could one day change their minds and completely hate her. And I don't think she's wrong in that fear as it could be applied to todays modern world in comparison to cancel culture... now while most public figures wouldn't cause a harm to the general public (I hope), people can go from loving them one day to absolutely despising them the next.
Then theirs Eliana's character. I kinda found her to be annoying at times... It felt like she was super inconsistent, killing people one minute then trying to save others in the next but I think thats the point. Not much went on in her POV (at least imo) at least in terms of getting stuff done but her POV was more of a self-discovery journey as we saw how often she had to fight against what she wanted to do with what she was trained to do. Towards the end of the book the author shows us how much shes grown by loss and the introduction of new characters as she begins to accept herself and finally get to the point of wanting to do something for the people and the country.
I loved this book and it was a whirlwind of emotions. Not to mention that spice scene was CRAZY... author is mad bold for putting that in. ...more

Auren spends half her life living sheltered and only after she is away from King Midas realizes just how isolated he kept her from the world. She comes to realize his manipulation and hypocrisy as she has to deal with the outside world. She finally starts to realize her own worth and gets angry at the men who treat her like a saddle and I'm so excited to see where she'll go with her newfound courage and powers.

Sigh.... I had so many hopes for this book; it had so much potential but didn't deliver. The magic was cool and the plot seemed pretty decent but what really made me lower the stars were the characters and their development.
I'll talk about what I liked so far. I really liked the overall dark themes in the book surrounding Saoirse as her magic was deadly and the author didn't sugar-coat it. The magic behind being a siren was so cool! I'll always love a little manipulation girl boss moment and how the water can essentially influence it. Like how the water controls the person and not the other way around. I've seen it in quite a few mermaid and siren media but it never gets old. Saoirse's powers are probably the biggest reason as to why I'll continue the series.
Another reason is Hayes. He felt like one of the only characters to genuinely want to do better. He starts as a naive and spoiled prince but underneath he is scared and needs motivation to want to do better. By the end of the book, I felt as if Hayes could make a good leader but since there wasn't too much politics involved in this story I'm not 100% sure. I also love how empathic he is because SPOILER ALERT the FMC is high-key insufferable so I was really surprised by how genuine he was with her.
Now moving on to things I didn't like. Saoirse. I really didn't like her character. And it's mainly stemming from her inability to follow her convictions and to think things through. Listen... girly is a little bit slow because at the beginning of the book she starts off as an assassin but has no idea who she's killing or who she works for.... like huh? HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW UR EMPLOYER??? Make it make sense. Then there's the fact that her character is very hypocritical.. which is probably the point but it was still very annoying to read. Especially when it came to her sister. I couldn't give two flying fucks about that lil human and I think that's where the main problem lies as I didn't see why Saoirse's obsession with her sister mattered... Like I read about it from Saoirse but I couldn't see it. From the books, she seemed like a very over-controlling sibling for no reason as they didn't even hang out that much to be considered close.... but whatever....
Overall this book was meh and I'm sad because I expected more....more
