Verity Hawkes has a landscaping business in the nice weather but refused to have a snow plow business in the winter to tide her over, so her best friend Em who runs the bakery on one side and a vegan bakery on the adjoining store tells Verity she should run a private investigating business looking for small items and solving small cases. But when a million dollar crossword puzzle contest unexplainably shows up in town, she is asked by one of the residents, who is advertising his art gallery opening to check on a wallet connected to the strange puzzle contest. Verity, ever the realist, believes the contest itself is a scam which sets the whole town against her. And when there is what seems to be an accidental death of a recluse seemingly crushed by his hoard of stuff, she is skeptical, she believes it could be murder. Then she is approached by a shady dog walking character asking her to sell pictures he stole from the hoarder's home. We are then treated to a second murder. So many things happening at the same time - so many threads are woven into a fun, laugh out loud mystery wrapped with a little romance from her hunky detective boyfriend, Jeff. As they were walking, Etta heard Dora scream near the large tree folklore having it be a witches tree where they do their charms. Etta coming up to Dora saw the naked dead body of Sebilla who some considered a witch. Dora being the nervous nelly type froze and Etta grabbed Dora's phone and called the police. With what they considered a bit of police bumbling, Etta told Dora they should look into things themselves. And so they get themselves deep in trouble. Add to that, Etta's daughter is keeping at her to sell her large house since her husband had died and with her pension she couldn't really afford to keep it up. The real estate agent she chose was the husband of Sebilla, coincidence? I think not. I love the life in these ladies.
