In a multiple POV Dracula meets Interview with the Vampire narrative, we are slowly reintroduced to Lucy as we knew her from Bram Stoker's classic work and catch up with her until modern day. Our eyes to much of this world is Iris, a woman trying to escape her family who stumbles across Lucy's journals while looking for things of value in the London home she inherited from her mother.
I'm a sucker for a good epistolary novel. It makes me feel like I'm living in a character's head. Lucy's journals were a great addition to her modern day narrative, making her feel that much more real. Admittedly, I did have to check now and again to see which version of Lucy I was currently reading about.
If you're looking for a fast paced read, this is not that. It is slow, perhaps to its detriment very early on, but once you settle in, it's a beautiful and haunting study of a young woman who has only ever wanted to love and be loved. I think if you're a fan of Striker's seminal work and, like me, wanted more for Mina's friend than she was given, you're going to love getting to know Lucy.

What that actually means in Book Dragon terms is that this series has my heart and the author has my attention.
Finding herself stuck in an elevator with an extremely attractive neighbor, Josie Scott does what anyone would do and has a conversation with him since they're forced in very close proximity. She very quickly realizes that she is stuck with Wyatt Boone, captain of the NHL team in Toronto.
I'll be honest and admit that I was a teensy concerned that these characters were going to be insta-lovey because when I say they have chemistry, I mean it. It was completely unfounded though as both of these characters were well developed and had very believable backgrounds that made the promised hesitation about a relationship pay off in an organic way that absolutely makes you root for these two. This was an enthusiastic 4 ...more

Every single Why Choose I have read this year has one male character I want to throttle (and I don’t mean the spicy way). For this round, it’s Aiden. That is fairly unimportant though.
What is important is how much I enjoyed this book. Once the action started, it didn't stop and very easily kept my attention. Raegan is an amazingly written FMC with a balance of power and trauma that makes her an easy foothold into a world where Gifted people exist. Other than Aiden (but really, probably him too) the MMCs are flawed in forgivable ways and show so much growth, making the romance work.
Check trigger warnings because here there be darkness. This is the first in the Raegan of Ruin series, and I, for one, have buckled in to enjoy this ride until the end. I will probably even forgive Aiden. Maybe.

I know how unhinged that sounds, but friends, I will ride at dawn for Avery. The MMCs are so well done. Even the one we start out hating is chef’s kiss. All of the relationships feel so natural which is a big thing. They make sense and the author does an amazing job of explaining how their pasts color their reactions.

Leera is so freaking adorable and just has characteristics that make not only the MMC want to protect her, but me as well. She reminds me of a young friend of mine.
Roman is grumpy perfection. When he's caught off guard by Leera, he does not react well, but he does everything in his power to make it up to her. It's a little insta-love, but there's an explanation as to why that I can accept.

As a big fan of meta horror, I appreciated the homage to slasher classics of the 1980s, both subtle and overt. The main characters are really loveable and I quickly found myself growing attached to even the most annoying amongst them. The antagonist is truly the weakest part for me. The backstory feels slightly rushed, especially in comparison to Ander and Liam. The teen characters are much more dynamic than the adults. While they are side characters, I wanted to see more dimension from them.
Being the beginning of a series, there were a few loose ends that are left at the end. I appreciate that the author managed to leave you wanting more without leaving the reader completely confused. The unanswered questions I have are enough to keep me holding on for Slasherverse #2 so I can find those answers.
This is a quick, fun read with enough gore to make most horror fans pretty happy. Its quick pace kept my attention even through the slower parts of the narrative, but I do wish some of the fakeouts were either focused on more or just taken out completely. I would recommend this for newer horror reads and can comfortably say this is a 4 star read.

In this novella, we are introduced to Michaela Valdis Bronwen, a fiery girl with a deep need for revenge, and the daemon she summons to get that revenge, Morax. Taking place during the same time as Retaliation (Michaela’s sister Seraphina’s story), it’s interesting to see how those events impact what happens with this book’s main characters.
I would recommend reading Retaliation before A Daemon’s Alliance to get the full scope of the plot, but in a pinch, ADA ...more

Marietta, or as she prefers to be known, Helga, just wants to be loved and accepted for who she is. It's not her fault that she was only born a few days ago. With the help of her father's lab assistant, Penny, she tries to figure out the turbulent life of a teen, boys (girls), friends, and belonging.
Helga is a wonderfully deep character that encompasses all of the existentialism that Adam does in Shelley's Frankenstein and teenage angst one would expect from a coming of age young adult story. My one complaint is that the love interest felt a little like an afterthought with very little build up, but that didn't affect my enjoyment of the book overall.

Making this into a graphic novel was a stroke of genius. The slightly messy illustrations work well with my concept of MrBallen's content. I do wish there were either longer stories or more of a selection.
