Crulden is all morally grey sexiness and Mina is all fierceness and they protect each other the best they can. I loved seeing them fall in love again in their horrific circumstances. I’m a bit of a sucker for a captivity romance, so it’s 0% surprising this one hits just right for me.

Steph is so patient, analytical, and the ultimate people pleaser. She sucks at setting boundaries and communicating her own needs. Juth has had a shitty life, but is devoted to his adoptive son and does whatever he can to keep him safe. They were so precious together, especially because they were able to see and meet one another’s needs.

Both of these MCs are well fleshed out and feel like outcasts. Devi is autistic coded and info dumps nonstop, which I adore. N’dek is an amputee in a world where he’s never seen a prosthetic (that he recognizes as one), Devi’s blunt sunshine-y energy is everything he needs and he grounds her while still supporting her passions. They are absolutely perfect for each other.

OG review: Devi is manic pixie dream girl 2.0. She has such a passion for science and is unashamed of it. N’Dek went through so much healing and accepted her completely for who she was. I loved that the author addressed depression without shying away from lack of hygiene being a common issue. It is painfully difficult to do basic things when your brain is sick....more

I really like Lauren and her way of dealing with the trauma of waking up on an ice planet. She’s compassionate but not perfect and a genuinely kind person. K’thar is also a well written character and the language barrier trope is on point. They are so sweet together. I still get confused about the a couple logic chains with the history of Vektal’s and K’thar’s peoples, but someone told me to just enjoy it lol.

Poor Alice and Kaspar have forced proximity for weeks in a tiny escape pod. Alice was fierce and a master of using her appearance to manipulate others, which was 100% necessary in a universe that is cruel for humans. Kaspar frustrated me because he seemed to hold onto that manipulation for a lot longer than made sense. They had a sweet love story though and I enjoy this book.

He was possessive, but in a sweet “you are a strong independent woman” way. Adorable AF. Iris had embraced dissociating and masking to cope with her trauma, which Alyvos, the most hot tempered Corsair, hated. They have their grow together as a couple and individually, letting go of some of their unhealthy coping mechanisms. They are a cute couple, but I get pissed with Alyvos’ impatience with Iris’ masking. Like bro, you are still coping with your trauma by getting in fist fights years after your PTSD started and you’re frustrated with Iris’ coping mechanisms after the first day?

He has all this never ending patience and the most awful self image and she has all the fierce self protectiveness. He gives her the time to heal and is her friend first and foremost. She is his champion and defender. Their balance is just so on point. The terrible condition her finds her in is utterly heartbreaking though, and the rescue aspect of it was awesome.

Rachel is an amputee and I love that she isn’t the “inspirational” type of disabled heroine. She isn’t sweet and meek. She’s a survivor in all ways. She’s brave in her own way, while still having that softness that makes her different than Claudia. Her dragon is a different kind of insane than Kael, this book has a lot more dubcon than any of the other books. Some of the wording in this book gets a bit repetitive and the dragon’s consent stuff didn’t make much sense. But still a good book.
