It is, of course, masterfully written, and, as far as form is concerned, probably closer to my tastes than the older prose of Somerset Maugham, but I confess that I found myself also a bit disappointed. I have pretty strong opinions regarding the fact that artists should still be held accountable for their actions and not put on a pedestal and judged by different moral standards than the rest of humans. Such a societal attitude creates monsters, as we have seen time and time again.
That's why I am a bit disappointed that Llosa - an author closer to our times than Maugham and who therefore should have been more in-tune with contemporary sensibilities - seems to be even more dismissive of any criticism of Gaugain's doings while in Tahiti and his callous disregard for the subjects he used and abused for his art. I really think we can do better as a society than excuse the abuses of people in the name of art and idealize them for it.
Other than that, as I said, the book is really beautiful and Llosa is a writing rockstar. :)...more

If you're sensitive to being triggered by depictions of rape, torture, and murder, maybe it's best to stay away from it, I think maybe 70% of the book consists of those.
At the same time, it's not just gore delivered masterfully so you can feel its full horror. The book also manages to describe the motivations of women involved in the Shining Path insurrection movement, and how, in their naivety, they thought the communist ideals they were signing up for meant they could conquer the elusive gender equality once and for all. Of course, it turned out to be out of their grasp even after the movement asked so much sacrifice on their behalf. It was still women who got the raw deal out of it.

I got this as a gift in my freshman year of college and had never heard of Isabel Allende before. As soon as I started reading it I loved it, and developed a taste for Latin American literature, beyond the go-to Garcia Marquez :).
This book also helped me overcome my dubious then bias against female authors (which, in my experience up till then, were a little lacking behind their male counterparts). It proposed a relatable female heroine without placing her on a pedestal which only thinly veils attempts at self-promotion. This was something new and I loved it.
Also, the magical realism is a candid, natural one, without much emphasis on the strangeness of events. This makes the entire story refreshing and lovely. ...more
