Reading any Oshimi Shuzo work is asking for the ordinary to be taken to an extreme 11. Shino is shy and has a terrible stuttering problem. I feel for her since I've always had speech problems (not to this extreme) so I can understand her desire for friendship. But man, Oshimi simply cannot just give a heartwarming story of a girl finding friendship. The ending had me all f-ed up, but man. I was so happy for Shino to finally get all that out.
Also, I did not know this book was based on the mangaka's actual experiences. The author's note got me pretty emotional, almost as much as the story. Definitely recommend. ...more

I'll A book that shows how a family lives with a love one under the spell of dementia and work to bring a bit of them back through the power of food.
I'll admit I teared up so much reading this. As someone that has dealt with a love one slowly loosing her memories, this hit hard. I love seeing An work with her grandfather to recreate a Vietnamese dish called xôi gâo, and the promise of a hundred years of happiness. Even for a brief moment, as her grandmother regains her memories, An shows disappointment that the spell didn't hold on longer. But, as disappointed as she is, her grandfather just says, let's soak some more seeds.
Gorgeous illustrations and heartfelt story from both writer and artist. ...more

CW for depression, alcoholism, using alcohol has a coping mechanism
I never thought I would cry over a book that clearly shows how tough it is to admit having a problem. As Mickey is battling with his ever-numbing depression, I couldn't help but shed tears as he clearly wants to be with Jayson, but also, struggling to acknowledge that something his wrong with his brain.
The hockey team was a great, bright spot in Mickey's story. While I may not know much about the sport itself, Graziadei does a great job at patiently leading the reader through the experiences of the team. Each member have their own ambitions and goals, and the story clearly shows them without telling us.
While opening endings are fun, this time I did feel kinda disappointed with the one in this book. Reminds me of the popular open endings from teen movies of the mid-2010s. I really wanted to see Mickey and Jayson grow more as a couple and Mickey connecting more with Dorion. Well, I guess I could just re-read the book. ...more

I love this series for how freaking heartbreaking and real it is. To see them decide on increasing their family, but suffer loss at the same time? I was tearing up constantly in this volume. I also, for some reason, thought this was the end of the series. I'm glad we get another volume!...more

This volume had me in tears. Charlie, suffering with his multiple mental illnesses, and Nick, trying to 'save' Charlie but also coming to terms that him and Charlie are only teenagers and can't heal Charlie's illness alone.
So many great moments in this volume, but be wary that it is incredibly heavy with topics of eating disorders, homophobic family members, and self harm.

Jennette's story is twisted, dark, and even the most tiny joys are blown over by how freaking terrible the adults in Jennette McCurdy's childhood were. I found the 'after' chapters even more dark and depressing than the before. I will never truly understand her experiences, as many of the things she is constantly fighting are things I will most likely never experience.
Reading Jennette's writing, I can only say the feelings, besides absolute rage over how her mother, grandmother, and Hollywood treated her, are also sad, but joyous. I'm glad she is here, sharing her story with thousands of us, and finding that writing can provide a relief from her emotions. I wish her mother didn't shut out Jennette's joy of writing a screen play when she was a child. But, sometimes reality is even worst than anything fiction has ever written. ...more

I enjoyed Kiss & Tell so very much. I was in love with the band, and Hunter especially. Even though he is completely focused on his issues, I still was rooting for him to overcome them. I also like that his band mates and fake-actual boyfriend weren't afraid to let him know he's being an asshat.
What really made this book for me was the realness of Hunter's experiences and how harsh being in the spotlight can be for gay boys. I especially cried by the climax of the story, my heart was killing itself over Hunter and Kaivin. I do wish Khorram went into a bit more about the diversity problems, casual racism and homophobia, and the projected image of virginity on boy bands, but since this is Hunter's story, we didn't really get to see that outside of the casual mentions.

LeUyen Pham does a great job handling this scary and trivial topic for young kids. Told through the perspective of a cat, the reader gets the feeling of unease that everyone is hunkered down in their homes due to something they cannot see.

**This thriller is incredibly heavy and deals with a tremendous amount of triggering content. Please take caution on what happens in this book and look out for your own mental health.**
Initially, I picked this book up after seeing it as a blind-date book on tiktok. I thought it would be a casual thriller about a young adult that gets sucked into a sex cult of the rich and famous (i.e. similar to Epstein or Weinstein). What I got instead was a terrible, twisted journey of self-sabotage, death, abuse, conversion therapy, and mental illnesses.

I freaking loved this romance! Happy EndContent Warnings for Breast Cancer, Cancer, Death of a Parent, Break-ups, Anxiety, fires, Illness of a parent.
I freaking loved this romance! Happy Endings first got me hooked by the premise of a young Vietnamese woman proudly educating other women about their sexual health and also promoting sex-toys and working toward a dream of owning a sex toy shop. And the love interest also caught me as the owner of his recently-passed mother's soul food restaurant.
I have never read a second-chance romance before, but I really dig it. The new rules and laws that the two have to learn with one to build up trust again after their break-up, I loved reading about it.
And let's not forget to mention the amazing sex scenes and masturbation scenes that Trixie and Andre gave were *muwah*. I have never read scenes that involved using sex toys to the pleasure of both parties, and I'm on board. ...more

I was surprised at how much I was cheering for Adam and Olive to succeed in their pairings. I wish we could have had more moments of Olive and her friends, but I love Olive feeling welcomed into Adam's friendships. There's also a fair amount of sexism in this book because of the STEM academic setting. I'm thankful for these moments of the book, because it really shows how much Olive has to deal with in her daily life outside of her romance. ...more

ThI've really enjoyed reading Shannon Hale's graphic novels about the trials she faced growing up, making friends, and battling her own insecurities.
This volume takes place in Shannon's eight grade year, so over a year since the last one left off. I did not expect this one to grow so dark towards the end when Shannon is dealing with depression and struggling with her own spiraling thoughts.
Definitely recommend to all middle school and young readers....more
