Too bad because the Empire in space/religious faith vs. technology revival side of the story, coupled with GoT-like politics, could've been really interesting otherwise....more

This is the story of an island on which, every generation, three potential queens are born: one with the power to poison and resist toxins, the other to command elements, the third to befriend animals and make plants grow. On the 16th birthday, then begins the year during which they have to fight, and only one of them will survive. ‘Fight’ meaning, of course, that the winner can only become so by killing the other queens, a.k.a as her own sisters.
Sounds like a gruesome premise, and obviously this got my attention, especially since two of the queens are complete underdogs, and presented as such from the start (the poisoner isn’t very good at resisting poisons in general, and the naturalist one can’t even make a bud flower, least of all call her own familiar). It’d be too easy for them to just get offed quickly, though, so I expected political manoeuvers and other intrigue moves. Which I got, at least partially, as the poisoners aim at discreetly making their queen look more seducing in order to garner support (get people to like you best, and they’re more likely to try and protect you from the other queens), and the elementalists hatch a plan of their own, with the poisoners in turn trying to divert it...
Too bad the story developed so slowly, and in a way that didn’t even allow to develop the queens’ characters that much. Well, to be fair—it’s not uninteresting, it’s just that, all things considered, the setting was ripe for much, much more intrigue (or to get more quickly to the beginning of the Ascension Year). So 80% of the book read like a prologue. On top of this, a couple of things rubbed me the wrong way; unfortunately, they were things that took up quite some space:
- The style. Sometimes I can do with third person present tense; other times, it just feels weird, and keeps throwing me out of the story. This was one of those times. (I’m really not convinced by that narrative style in anything longer than 20-30 pages, to be honest. Still waiting for a story to fully convince me.)
- The romance: Katharine’s... all right, there was a political edge to her getting lessons in seduction, and once you can seduce, I’m not surprised to see romance ensue with someone at some point. But Jules’s took too much from ‘Arsinoe time’. Not that I didn’t like Jules herself, only the guy takes up screen time instead of letting us see the Jules/Arsinoe relationship, which could’ve really shone as a strong friendship, and... let’s be honest, he’s nothing special, the triangle (of course there’s a triangle) is nothing special, and all the fuss didn’t make much sense to me. Colour me callous. Get out, Joseph. You’re an appalling boor.
This said, I was expecting a twist at the end, and there was one, and for once it wasn’t the one I was expecting. So there’s that, and I still want to read the next book to see how the actual Ascension Year is going to unfold (hopefully with more intrigue and less half-baked romance).
On the positive side:
- The characters weren’t too clever nor developed, but I quite appreciated that they weren’t all black-hearted, and certainly not from the beginning. As much as I bemoan the lack of intrigue-action, this kind of story wouldn’t be interesting at all if the characters supposed to kill each other could do so with a flick of a hand without even arching an eyebrow. Mirabella is sweet, and the one who’s least blinded by hate. Arsinoe is very much no-nonsense, knowing she’s very likely to be the first to die, yet not spending her time woe-is-me’ing herself. Katharine is scrawny and weakened by her training, but she doesn’t cry over it, and keeps doing her best and putting her willpower into it. They’re not perfect, oh no; nevertheless, they each have a likeable side.
- Surprisingly, I liked Billy, too. You’d think ‘obvious love interest’, but he was definitely more the good, loyal friend than the charming suitor, and this worked much, much better for me. Also, his (kind of) ballsy move at the Disembarking.
Conclusion: 2 stars. I really liked the last 20%, but I wish more time had been spent on the actual intrigue, with more blood and twists there, and less on the romance....more

I'm usually not much into "high school drama" (it's often too over the top for me, or perhaps my high school years were just too quiet and boringly normal, who knows), but this novel was quite pleasant to read, and what could've been total cliché characters were surprisingly fleshed out and interesting, in spite of fitting tropes.
Alexandra Miles is the expected Queen Bee, the one who'll no doubt become Homecoming Queen, like she has planned. Everything is planned, for her to get out of Spencer with a bang, not a whimper, become Miss America, and then... What else? What's more? Lexi doesn't know, and it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter too much either that she's living what used to be her mother's dream, the latter her having pushed her on the pageants road since she was a toddler. In short: Lexi is a queen, she knows it, she's smart and cunning on top of being pretty, and she won't settle down for anything less. And she's ready to go to quite a few lengths for that. Enters Erin, the transfer student, Erin the cutie who's so adorable her mere presence soon starts to turn tables. She's a viable candidate for Homecoming Queen... a -very- viable candidate. This puts several things into motion, Lexi's plans not the least.
I liked Alexandra in general. She's the villain, she's cold and calculating, and overall all that's "nice" about her is just on the surface, acting, ploys to get what she wants and twirl people around her finger. She's good at that, really good, and she has the connections to boot, including her best friend Sam and her brother. She's despicable, too, the way she uses Sam and Wyatt's love for her to make them do her bidding. Yet once she comes home, once she has to face her drunken mother who forces her through the motions, you can't help but wonder if she's not just a kid who never received enough love—not an excuse, but an explanation. And when she believes in something, she pours her heart in it, for instance the way she stood up for Sam when the latter made her coming out. So, yes, she's selfish, self-centered, and not a likeable person... yet I still found myself rooting for her sometimes. Not necessarily in a "I want to see her crush the others" way; instead, in a "I don't want her to win but I also don't want her to be completely crushed at the end".
The story in general revolves around the girls. Male characters are present, but they're not the main focus, they're not the end to attain. These girls fend for themselves: Lexi aiming to be queen; Sam who sometimes questions her fierce loyalty; Erin the newcomer whose plans are a mystery; Sloane whom Alexandra humiliated and who's determined to act instead of remaining passive; Ivy who gets dragged along the way yet turns out to be stronger than she thinks. The narrative makes use of four POVs (Lexi, Sam, Sloane and Ivy), and manages to play on their unreliability: is this or that person a real schemer, or do they just seem they are because Lexi perceives them that way?
Bonus points as well for the lesbian characters, and for the subplot that makes them strong people on their own, without going for the "villain / victim / casualty" tropes. They're not 100% understood, but they're not complete pariahs either, and stand their ground: no victimisation here. The romantic undertones would work exactly the same if they were about a boy and a girl; it's all about understanding one's feelings, deciding who's the most important person after all, discovering love in an unexpected place, basically being human, with needs and feelings like everybody else.
Where I found the book wanting was in some of the plotting and decisions. Lexi's plot was a bit... strange and convoluted, and I kept wondering if the scheme she had hatched would be very efficient anyway. It seemed it was more cruel than anything else, and that it rested on a somewhat "naive" vision. Granted, this fits, in that she's brilliant but still 17, not a mastermind with decades of manipulations behind her; nevertheless, it also reminded me that this was, well, high school drama, and in that, it came too close to the usual clichés (such as "let's make X drunk so that she looks bad in front of the whole school" -- I guess Lexi had made me expect something more sophisticated, all in all). In the end, I suppose the plot was too simple to my liking, without as many twists and devious plans as I would've hoped. It would definitely have benefitted from more than the basic Homecoming thing....more

Mixed bag of feelings and opinions regarding this novel: it has the making of a great epic, with battles and politics and court intrigue and betrayals... but more than once, it read more like a history book, which didn't make the characters really three-dimensional.
This is the story of Mata Zyndu, “the Chrysanthemum”, scion of a noble though destroyed family, a powerful warrior destined to do great things and convinced everything and everyone has their rightful place in the world; and Kuni Garu, “the Dandelion”, a good-to-nothing son turned gangster for want of fidning a goal in life first, but who's gradually proving himself very resourceful. As Emperor Mapidéré's reign of terror plunges more and more people into poverty and forced building works, these two men, each for their own reasons, find themselves taking arms in the hopes of making the isles of Dara a peaceful set of kingdoms again... But can thisbe achieved, or will the empowered kings go back to petty squabbling of old?
As a lot of stories go, it is ripe with strife, brothers turning against each other, allies found where nobody ever expected them, faithful families and love interests turned traitors, and... ell, you name it, it probably has it. The pacing was usually fast, covering several weeks or months at times, the novel spanning a few years of fights and rebellion and of trying to build a new world. It never wants for events, for the tide turning suddenly for this or that character, for another character managing to come up with a new deal, and so on.
The setting is reminiscent of feudal Chinese society, with a dash of steampunk (there are rudimentary airships, and later steam technology gets developed). The Emperor is law, everybody's below him, those who voice out their criticism tend to be silenced forever very quickly. Sons and daughters are expected to uphold the family's honour, and if they don't, they often get cast away or at least partly shunned. While I confess not knowing much to Chinese history, customs and mores, the story managed to make me feel its influences, in a good way. I had no trouble imagining the complex sitting and greeting etiquette, or to picture schools with ancient men dispensing the teachings of sages of old (obviously modelled on Confucius or Sun Tzu, but whether this is plagiarism or homage didn't matter much to me, since I liked the world depicted here).
And even though the world of Dara isn't perfect, even though the Emperor is a tyrant and his son a naïve, sheltered teenager, there aren't only bad sides to the “tyranny”: as Mapidéré displaces noble families to prevent them from rallying supporters in their original lands, trade develops (because, simply enough, people sent to other islands long for their home's cooking and clothing, and so on). There's a vision gone wrong in all this... but a vision nonetheless.
On the downside, the writing style, while beautiful in some places, often felt dry and too descriptive—too much telling, not enough showing, making the action read as if it was being told by a remote observer. This in turn impeded the characters' development, as often, too, we're told of their merits and flaws, of how they evolve... instead of being shown. I still found myself rooting alternatively for Kuni, for Mata, for Gin and a few others; nevertheless, I would've liked them even more had their potential complexity really shone through, rather than being recounted. And they really had such potential, considering the nest of opportunities and treasons they went through. So many scenes that could have been between Jia and Risana, for instance, but were told in too few, too short paragraphs.
Also, I must admit I didn't really care for the part played by the gods. So they shouldn't interfere directly... but some did it indirectly... but was it really so indirect... but wait, in the end it's still the mere mortals making history anyway... I sort of get this message, however the way it was handed felt like a series of devices meant to advance the plot, and nothing more.
Conclusion: mostly I liked this story, and may check the second volume later. It had potential for something bigger, though, something grander, especially when the characters were concerned—and in the end, it wasn't so much....more

Good ideas in terms of world building, although in general, I found the novel a little confusing.
Lots of concepts introduced here, with references to our world: Prytennia is obviously Britain, the Roman Empire and Egypt speak for themselves, and so it was very easy to picture the setting, geographically speaking. There's still royalty in "Britain": check. Lutèce is Paris: check (shall I admit to knowing quite a few cities' old Roman names thanks to "Asterix"?). Various deities associated to various cults, like Cernunnos or Lakshmi: check. At first, it may look like a mish-mash, but it makes a lot of sense in a context where, many centuries ago, the Gods "Answered" people's prayers and actually descended on the world, or made themselves incarnate in other ways. The Egyptian "gods", for instance, who gave birth to several strains of vampirism, each with its own powers (the Shu control winds, the Thoth-den use their blood to heal people, the Ma'at can tell who's lying...). Or Sulis (who in our world used to be worshipped at Bath), who manifests herself through three women, the Suleviae. For someone who knows a little about mythology, or even knows the very basics and wants to learn more, this book gives a few tracks to follow.
However, I didn't get the same feeling here I got from the blurb. Prytennia's climate seems to be warm (I immediately imagined cities close to the desert, with people wearing "skirts" instead of trousers), but I didn't feel the urgency of being "under attack from the wind itself". The political intrigues from the Swedes, through their representative Gustav, seemed to be more of an afterthought than something that would really affect Prytennia. The "selling oneself to a vampire" part didn't seem that bad: more a contract for a decade or so, without aging, and I guess there are so many worse ways to indenture oneself. I don't know if this came from the plot itself (Arianne and her nieces and nephew investigating to know what happened to the dead parents) or from the narrative, the way it was woven. Maybe I was expecting something else.
I also couldn't push myself to really care for the characters. Arianne's calm take on basically everything dampened the predicament she was in (potentially turning into a vampire against her will—that's not a spoiler, you know about it in the very first chapters). The romantic interests came a little out of nowhere, and I'm not sure if they were exactly important when pitched against the backdrop of "who dunnit" and "there's a secret behind what our parents were working on". When some characters disappeared, I wasn't so invested, because I hadn't gotten to know them more beforehand, and they were more sidenotes for me than people. Mostly I felt that the characters were removed from themselves, dispassionately looking at their own lives from afar, and so in turn I looked at them from afar, too.
Still, I liked the world developed here. Perhaps a bit too much was shoved in the reader's face from the beginning (any book that needs a glossary tends to be of that kind), but some more careful reading on my part allowed me to quickly grab what it was all about. And it's definitely a good thing that a lot of the characters are women, and they do Important Things, and it's completely normal because women in this world get to do Important Things all the time anyway, and it's not only the men's turf. (The Queen is part of a goddess incarnate and gets to mingle with dragons, one of the princesses commands a very special kind of guard/spies, girls get to study engineering and can land apprenticeships in workshops, or even have workshops of their own, without society making them feel "improper"... Etc.)
I may decide to grab the second volume at some point. I don't know yet. I'm hovering around the 2.5 stars mark here, in between some parts I found "OK" and others that made me think "this is a good idea, I like it". (Vampires especially: they aren't emo creatures, they become like that due to a symbiotic relationship with specific strains living in their blood, they have souls, they believe in an Egyptian-like Otherworld where they have to strengthen their ba before being able to carry on.) If the next book can get past the somewhat-confusing approach to this world, and focuses more on the characters in a way that would make me feel involved, then I'll be interested....more

I read the first book not long ago, and a lot of what I posted in my review at the time is valid again in here. The heist(s), with several levels of deception, double-crossing the opponent, thwarted plans, having to do with a situation turned for the worst... And with twists that aren't always planned by all members of the team, ending in somewhat hilarious moments that nicely counterbalance the overall "they're a bit too ready for absolutely everything" feeling one may get. Because something's bound to give, to turn sour in a heist, otherwise there wouldn't be as much interest in reading such adventures—at least not for me.
The characters are mostly the same, with some changes reflecting darker turns of events from the first book. Kail is still his old I-give-a-name-to-everything lockpick and pickpocket, and his skill in wielding "mom jokes" remains the same (also he's contaminated Icy); however, his brush with mind-bending magic left him a bit more somber, but more decided than ever to fight this. Desidora has returned to her duties, yet is now questioning her role within the team, as she feels she is less useful. (I quite liked the conversations between these two, as their predicaments were somewhat related.) Ululenia and Dairy... well, let's just say things didn't exactly go as planned (not to mention that the unicorn had to make a choice whose consequences wouldn't be so light). Loch is trying to work on the side of a law that doesn't exactly make things easy for her in that regard. Hessler has broadened his magic, with somewhat dangerous results that however leave room to humorous dialogues: a welcome thing, considering that the tone of the novel is a bit darker and that this time, wounds aren't only superficial.
We are given a bit more of a view of other parts of the world here: the Empire, the dwarves, the elves, as well as the Ancients themselves. A welcome addition, too. At first sight, it doesn't stray too far from clichés (Elves had tree-ships and prefer to live far from humans, dwarves are often miners...); however, read just a little longer and the differences become obvious. I especially liked how the dwarves were so polite and orderly, while the elf dignitary was at the same time badass and insufferable (in a funny way). While the rules of magic in this world remain fuzzy, the relationship between magic and elves (through the crustals embedded in the latter) was interesting nonetheless.
This novel may have been slightly less humorous than the first one, because its stakes were higher from the beginning—not just a heist to steal a book and earn tons of money, but preventing a war, and trying not to become the sacrificial lamb in the middle of all this. Oddly or not, I liked it even better for this reason, and for another one: this time, knowing the characters, I could also better anticipate on what their moves might or might not be, and this made it more "logical", so to speak, when something happened that I would've otherwise deemed a deus ex machina. Predictable? In a way. Yet the kind of predictable I like, that I *want* to see happen, and then, when it happens, I strike the air with my fist and I'm all "Yesss!"
4.5 stars. I'll keep recommending this series, and hope book 3 is on the same level....more

I'm definitely not a fan of present tense 3rd person narration, so it took me a while to finally get to this book. However, once I was immersed into the story, its plot unfurled and flew by quite fast, keeping me interested.
There's corporate warfare, and strange politics based on contracts voluntarily built on loopholes to allow a way out. There are trials fought to death in gruesome duels, in a society full of glitz and glamour, of parties and fancy clothes, of heaps of money pitched against the utter poverty of those whose shallowest breath is still counted and charged, driving them more and more into depth. An exquisite blend of blinding limelights obfuscating ugly shadows, and of soft shadows trying to stand against a destructive light.
Quite a few characters evolve in this first part of the “Luna” duology. The list at the beginning kind of made me fear I wouldn't find my way through them—and so, exerting the full strength of my usual spirit of contradiction, I decided not to read this list, to see if I could sort it out myself. Answer: yes, I could. Even though the language of this “new moon society” is full of terms borrowed from many cultures, the story still flowed in a way that let me understand who was who, who was married to whom, and who was doing what.
This same society is tremendously complex, old-fashioned and open at the same time. Alliances are drawn through arranged marriages, sometimes even between teenagers and adults fifteen years older than them (and wrapping one's mind around that is quite a feat); those same alliances, though, don't rest the least bit on traditional conventions. Men marry men if they like; some live in codified polyamory relationships; some decide to assume an identity based on neither femininity nor masculinity; some even go with pronouns related not to their gender but to their deeper self (especially the “wolves”: people influenced by the waxing and waning of the Earth). It's good to see relationships going in varied ways, and I thought it fitted a future society whose defining norms were in part similar to those we know, and in part so different.
It's, frankly, an overwhelming world, a microcosm full of its own self-aggrandised perception, dependent on Earth for some things, keeping Earth in a tight vise for others (Corta Hélio “lights Earth every day” through its helium-3 exports); as much open to it (“Jo Moonbeams” leave the blue planet on a very regular basis to come and work on the moon) as it is closed (moon people have basically two years before their bones become too brittle, and after that time, either they have to go back to Earth or decide to stay in space forever, since gravity would literally crush them). In a way, one novel—or two—isn't enough to explore all this, and it was a bit frustrating: inwardly, I was screaming for more.
The cast of characters reflect this society. They are ruthless, they are fighters each in their own way: Ariel in the courts, Lucas through his schemes, Carlinhos with his bikers and his knives, Marina with her Earthian strength and will to find a job to support her family... Even Lucasinho, through his little teenage rebellion that however allows him to understand what finding allies truly means. They dance in their own world, wary of the other families yet drawn to them out of necessity, to play the game of alliances, of betrayal, of selling and getting information, of trying to reconcile their real feelings to the fact they cannot afford to show anything, lest they be seen as weak. And the intrigue: a slash here, a blow there, events piling up on each other now and then, until the finale. All under the failing eye of Adriana Corta, the Founder, the Matriarch, fearing her children would fight for the remains of House Corta, and trying to remain as hard as she used to be when, as a young woman, she set out to found her own dynasty, the Fifth Dragon.
(I like Adriana. I first discovered her in a short story, which made me jump on the novel when it was on NetGalley. Her own narrative, her confession, highlighted the story of the Cortas, of how they rose to power, of their allies... and of the enemies they made along the way.)
On the downside, I wasn't too sold on the “reverse werewolf” idea: while interesting, it seemed to come out of nowhere (I was more interested in the other part of Wagner's story, to be honest). But maybe it'll play another part in the upcoming volume. There's also a soap opera side to all these relationships and backstabbing and guessing who's preparing what against whom, that was perhaps a bit “too much”. This said, since I still found myself rooting for some of the characters, and entrenched within the story, I am not going to complain: sometimes, “too much” is highly entertaining no matter what.
Conclusion: a few elements that I wasn't convinced by, but a world and a plot I definitely want to see through in the second book....more

I'm not sure how to rate this book, so I'll go with 3 stars for now.
It's not a bad book, definitely not. It's actually pretty interesting, with a setting that for once isn't the typical "European medieval fantasy" one, and is closer to a kind of 1001 Nights world. A city in the desert, a little world of culture and trade with tribes from the outside, powerful and rife with intrigue, slum dwellers, thieves, pit fights, all under the watchful eyes of twelve immortal lords (the Kings) and their specially trained guard, the Maidens of the Blade (who are actual daughters of those kings, recruited and trained to serve their fathers, then train their sisters/cousins later). The Maidens have their own rituals, their own strifes, their special brand of loyalty to the Kings, who in turn also have *their* rituals: on the night of Beht Zha’ir, every six weeks, people close their doors and tremble in their homes, for the mysterious and dreadful asirim, servants of the Kings, walk the streets to take away those who have been "chosen". And, of course, the chosen are never to be seen again.
In the middle of this setting, Çedamihn and her friend/heart brother, Emre, wade a world of intrigue: both as runners for Osman, and Çeda as fighter in the pits under the mask of the "White Wolf". When Emre is attacked carrying the second half of a mysterious package, Çeda starts investigating, and soon discovers that she may have to dive at last in yet another world, of magic and legends, of gods and immortal beings: the one where her mother was killed by the Kings, the one where she is meant to avenge her, the one where she lets the adichara petals melt under her tongue to sharpen her sense, and sneaks in the desert at night to witness strange happenings in the sacred gardens full of blooms only the Kings and Maidens are allowed to harvest.
The author also plays on other points of view than Çeda's, and also uses "flashback chapters" to bring in parts of her and Emre's history. I know such techniques aren't always well-liked, but as far as I was concerned, I thought them welcome. The flashbacks are inserted precisely where they matter, highlighting the main plot, and the secondary POVs were useful to grasp other sides of the world, when it wouldn't have made sense for Çeda to live such moments.
In other words: intrigue and enchantment for me.
And yet, I don't really know why, I spent quite some time poising between "want to keep reading" and "let's read something else". Maybe because this wasn't a good period for me to read long fantasy books—in which case, by all means, don't let this prevent you from giving a try at this first volume of the series. (For what it's worth, at the moment, I really don't feel like reading ASoIaF either.) Or maybe because, in some parts, the story moved a bit too slowly, with the plot being fairly obvious for the reader? (Çeda's secret was too easy to guess for me, so by the time she discovered it herself, I had already moved on.)
Basically, the first and last chapters felt exciting. Same with others towards the middle. And then there were lulls.
However, by the end of the book, the setting is, well, ready for more, and different threads are woven. The Moonless Host. Çeda's and Emre's diverging paths, that may yet still bring them together in more than one way. The Kings and the Maidens, and Çeda's involvment in their plots. The strange Meryam and her blood magic, as well as the lord travelling with her—their paths, too, aren't as straightforward as they first appear...
This could definitely lead to something interesting, so I'm likely to keep an eye on this series to see how those plots unfurl....more

I'd say that things are a little similar here, but that knowing the works that the author plays with (Romeo & Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, Othello...) helps in guessing a few things... and being misled when it comes to others, in a good way. I could both anticipate and still be surprised in the end.
This novel is more intricate than the first one, since it weaves the stories of the three Montecchi sisters along with those of the Shadow Master and Vincenzo, a young scribe with a strange power of making events happen differently by (re)writing them, a really powerful ability in its own right. These retellings from Shakespeare's plays—and from the tales that inspired them—were fairly interesting: close enough, yet also subtly different, with a dash of humour as well. Mostly it worked for me, although there were a few instances in which the dialogues were, oddly enough, "too" Shakespearian, and clashed slightly with the way the characters spoke in general.
The city itself felt very present, much like in the first book. The atmosphere was more magical and poetic this time, through the depiction of a Venice-like city kept afloat by the powers of four couple of mages called the Seers, facing strange creatures in its waters, a plague, the looming threat of the Ottomans (Othmen), and a shady group of assassins taking down the Council members one by one. This is mostly where things felt confusing sometimes, because a lot was at stake, and the explanation at the end behind those events was too hasty, too convenient, perhaps. This is also where I would've liked the novel to be longer, to expand more on the Seers, on how their magic worked (pretty shady as well in its own way!), and on some of the "background characters", so to speak.
However, paradoxically, the events surrounding the Shadow Master and Vincenzo, as confusing as they may seem, started shedding some light on events and characters from the first novel—especially when a certain couple was concerned. Though I may be mistaken, I have a gut feeling that the author is building something here, something far bigger than I had suspected at first: a sort of network of plots meant to collide at the very end, with the Shadow Master acting both as a hero/assassin and a storyteller, gifted with abilities that go deeper than suspected at first. I cannot deny, too, that the Shadow Master sometimes had a Fool's flavour to him (as in a Shakespearian Fool), which I don't doubt was totally on purpose. If only for that, combined to how I enjoyed the story, I shall make it a 3.5 stars, bumped to 4. I definitely hope my hunches are correct.

It's definitely of the "show, don't tell" variety, which I tend to prefer in fantasy (no prologue barely hiding a history and geography lesson!), and while it may seem a harsh way of taking the reader and throwing her into it, I didn't find it that difficult to understand the concepts (the ones around magic, for instance). I also feel like we have barely touched upon the world-building, and that there's sturdy ground for a lot of developments.
On the downside, this first volume also felt a little rough around the edges, with events piling upon each other without a real sense of a clear plot. It sort of mirrors events/life in general, but in a novel, it's a bit weird (all the more because the characters converged towards each other as if manipulated, and this didn't sit too well with the "random" side of things).
Overall it's more a "I like it" book, and I'll probably give a shot at volume 2 at some point, to see if the world and looming plots keep being developed. I just hope this next book will be at least slightly more structured....more

I liked the premise, I really did—not to mention that theme of the broken, rotting throne at night against the backdrop of a ruined Paris. There's something both sick and magical to such a city. The Seine river blackened and polluted by magic turned sour, horrors lurking in its waters. Gangs scrapping remnants in order to survive, Fallen angels being their favourite preys, preys that end stripped up of blood and bone and basically everything, for the power those organs can bring. Houses full of mages, Fallens and their dependents, vying for domination, yet also teetering on the brink of destruction, for the last large-scale conflict among them ended up being the 1914 war, the Great War nobody nor any place in the world seems to have recovered even 60 years later...
Yes. Definitely enchanting, in a morbid way. I couldn't help but be fascinated by this charred landscape, by the sheer hopelessness permeating eveything and everyone, despite the pseudo-grandeur some of the characters tried to keep as their facade. Descriptions here worked pretty well for me, making it easy to create this picture of Paris in my mind, all the more because I've walked those places, the parvis of Notre-Dame, the Halles, and so on. The atmosphere was somewhat old-fashioned, in that people in the story clung to a world long gone by (far away colonies entangled in the War, displays from fashion stores back when everything was still gilded...), and a lot of names were really traditional French names (Ninon, Madeleine, Isabelle, Philippe...). Although, as a native French speaker, it was also somewhat weird to see those names associated to English ones like Silverspires or Morningstar; that's a matter of language on my part, though, and not any fault of the book.
And no romance. There was no room for that here. The only "links" were of blood and curses and magic and slavery of sorts. No "souls destined to be together". The relationship between Philippe and Isabelle definitely wasn't born under the brightest star, so to speak.
The reason why I'm not rating this novel higher is because... I wanted more. The mystery, the curse, those were intriguing, but the balance between unveiling them, developing the characters and showing the world around them was regularly a bit off. I would have wanted to see more interaction between Philippe, Isabelle and Madeleine; see more about how they evolved, or rather, could have evolved as people. I expected to see more of House politics, of the complex webbing of alliances and betrayal and various other ways of pecking at each other. More about Philippe's origins and what his presence in Paris meant, more questioning about immortality and fallen angels, perhaps? At times, I felt that all that was more akin to beating around the bush, and that a while elapsed with nothing really happening, neither in terms of events nor of character growth. That while would've been the perfect place to inject... well, "more".
I was also not too convinced by some of the secondary characters, more specifically Selene. I expected more cunning on her part, as someone who had been playing the game of House politics for decades. As a Head of House, she wasn't "older" than Asmodeus, yet the latter and his schemes hooked me much more, seemed more ruthless and thus believable. I got it, nobody could have equalled Morningstar, but...
All in all, this is still an "I liked it" book. Just not the "I'm in awe" story I had hoped for....more

Let's not dwell for too long on the cover, which is definitely a reminder of older SF books design, but didn't do much for me. (To be faire, I got my share of gorgeous covers hiding stupid novels, though. So I assumed that the contrary might be true as well.)
I must also say that I never read any of the Honor Harrington novels; as a result, I can't say if it's true to the Honorverse or not, and can't compare it to other similar works by those authors. I went into this one not even knowing what I was going into, except that "it seems to be military sci-fi, and I kind of feel like reading this genre at the moment." Especially since the blurb depicted a somewhat decadent Navy, and that such settings are always ripe for a lot of themes I tend to appreciate.
Travis Long is a young man, even a teenager, whose family doesn't pay much attention to: his half-brother Gavin is a Lord, and his mother is busy with her work. On a whim, he decides to join the Royal Manticoran Navy, both craving for a discipline he was never subjected to and for a place to be after a stunt that almost went wrong for him. To be honest, I'm still not sure about his motivations: I would've liked to see his family problems depicted a little more deeply, perhaps, or to be given more details, because as it is, it seemed just a little "woe is me". Fortunately, this doesn't last for long, and Travis doesn't dwell on it for the whole novel; we only get a little reminder a couple of times. The character tends to be a rule-stickler, which fits as an echo of what he craved. On the other hand, it holds good potential for inner conflict: he sticks to rules, but has a natural tendency to think outside the box, and while the latter helps in tense situations, at some point, I can envision both aspects of his personality getting pitched against each other. Although Travis isn't a terribly likeable young man in the beginning, there's definitely room for development here. He didn't strike me as a character who would forever remain the same.
The novel focuses on two major themes: Travis's life in the Navy (as well as the problems that it has to face later—not going to spoil), and the game of politics that runs behind the scenes. The Manticore system is an interesting enough setting: a kingdom actually born from what used to be a corporation, Manticore Ltd. (I have no idea how the Board ever came to decide going monarchical was a good idea, but why not. This is also one of those aspects I would've want to learn more about. However, as I said, I don't know the Honorverse, and perhaps this is explained in another book. I still wish there had been more of an explanation here, for readers like me.) In a way, it reminded me a little of parliamentarian monarchies like the UK's, with a king—and even a former ruler named "Queen Elizabeth"—who holds decisional power... but not so much that he can afford to disregard Parliament's pressures.
In the novel, the political intrigue runs mostly around the conundrum of "what to do with a Navy that has never known a war, and whose last round of battles was against some pirates, one century ago?" Gavin Winterfall, Travis's half-brother, plays a minor role in this, but one that might expand in the next novel, perhaps, because he turned out to be more intrigue-savvy than his own allies thought at first. As for the RMN itself, its own people sometimes question their place, wondering if what they do is so useful, and if they'll be ready the day a real war looms.
The story itself was quite entertaining, though a little heavy-handed on technical and military terms; I could adapt to those, and I enjoyed the atmosphere they created, but they might be a problem for readers who're not keen on them. The dialogues made me feel like I was really on a spaceship, with operations going on following a given protocol. I also enjoyed how Travis manages to play an important part, thanks to his ideas, yet isn't the one who completely saves the day all the time (he's only enlisted, not a captain or another officer, and his being THE saviour who does everything wouldn't have fit in my opinion). Even the way he gets rewarded reflects how Navy personnel has to traipse around potential political mishaps.
I'm not exactly fond of the ending, though. It seemed kind of... predictable to me.
The novel has its flaws, and I wouldn't consider it as excellent, but as a beginning to a series, I think it sets the stage for a lot of potentially interesting developments, and I certainly wouldn't mind reading the next installment. 3.5 stars....more

I'll admit I'm not quite sure yet what to make of this book, so for once, I'm going to make up my mind as I write my review.
The story's set in an alternate Renaissance setting, in which the Medici and Lorraine families compete within the Walled City for the monopoly on a spice able to keep the plague out. While in other parts of the country, plague-infected people are dying by dozens, those in the city worry more about the political schemes of the two families, carried by the inventions of Galileo and Leonardo. The one controls time through clever devices; the other controls weather and has developed a science of metamorphosis. Amidst the tensions, Lucia Lorraine, the Duke's daughter, and Lorenzo, apprenticed to Galileo and ward of the Medici, just want to be free to let their young love blossom, all too conscious that it could never happen unless they eloped or found another way.
There are lots of hints to well-known plots and historical events and people here. Renaissance Italy, the great inventors, Shakespeare's plays (Romeo and Juliet comes to mind, of course, and the Duchess definitely has something of Lady Macbeth to her)... Mostly they're easy to catch, though missing them would mean missing on some finer aspects of the novel. It didn't lack a touch of humour either, and I found myself smiling more than once, because it was just the right amount for me, without derailing the story. The part with the cook's assistant and the pie later delivered made me laugh, for its sheer "what the hell" aspect. The inventions were brilliant, and I liked that this strange science, poised between our own and sorcery, had drawbacks, such as making people grow older, faster, or turning them to stone. No such power should ever be totally free to wield.
The novel's more plot-driven than character-driven. It worked for me, due to the context, the many winks to history and plays, and the city setting (I much prefer fantasy within enclosed spaces, than "travel fantasy"); on the other hand, a reader won't find deep psychological profiles here.
I found the writing style efficient, able to carry vivid descriptions—the Walled City felt like a character itself, and I had no problem when it came to imagining it. However, the book could do with a last round of proof reading. There were a few typos and missing words now and then, noticeable enough that I couldn't help but make a mental note about those. (This being an ARC copy, those typos may be fixed once the official publishing date rolls in.)
While the first part of the story was really entertaining, I thought the second one was a little confusing, in that I was left with more than just a couple of questions about who was who and what exactly happened. If those answers were hidden somewhere, then I'm afraid I missed them. What about the Medici and the Lorraine at the end? Was a new order meant to happen, or not? Who exactly were the Nameless One and the Shadow Master? (view spoiler)[At some point, I had that theory that the Master was part of Lorenzo's mind only, that he didn't really exist and was a way for the young man to find his place in the world, but it seems I was wrong. I also wondered if the Nameless One's wife wasn't Cosimo's mother, but no father was ever mentioned, so I guess I was wrong again. (hide spoiler)] I'm not positive I fully "got it". It may be intentional, in order to leave the readers come up with their own conclusions and interpretations, but in this case, it was a little too vague to my liking.
