I cannot for my life figure out what made download this on audio. I usually steer way clear of anything that exudes even a whiff of drugs, cartels and mafia. I'm approximately half way through and with all the shit November is giving me, I simply cannot take a bad book. I have never been so indifferent to how anything ends as with this one. Come on, just go ahead and die everyone already! If I bothered to listen to it to the end, I would probably want to use a hammer on my innocent mp3 player....more

I simply cannot be bothered to read this anymore. I do not care one iota for Stevie (short for Stephanie) or her dead - supposedly murdered - boyfriend Simon. Not even the package Simon left Stevie is enough to keep my interest. The premise is good, the momentum is lacking. Completely. Good luck Stevie, may you not be murdered too....more

I cannot be enticed out the door, even on this beautiful Christmas day, with this on my ears. I have no idea what the point of this book is. I thought it would be something like "Carmilla", but it's just uninteresting drivel. To make it worse, it's told from many different perspectives, which makes the point of the narrative even more difficult to grasp. No thanks, on to something else. ...more

There was some high-flying literary experiments going on here that I did not have the patience to try to understand. So when my boredom reached it's peak at 30%, I left it.
This is not a bad book I suppose - so don't let me deter you from reading it, if you fancy to do so - it just was not to my taste. Wrong book at the wrong time....more

I just couldn't take it anymore. There was something about the fragmented story line, the unnecessary cliff hangers at every chapter's end, and the third person present tense narration that annoyed me beyond belief. I am stunned, because I don't recall being irritated by little things when reading other works by this author.
I couldn't get a grip of Jack Caffrey in this book. He was just unpleasant and slippery as an eel. The other story line, that of a family in an isolated house, was gawd-awful. As soon as I read that they had a dog I was pretty sure I wouldn't finish, knowing full well what must come. I find descriptions of animal torture incredibly distasteful. The perpetrators had only just begun on the dog when I decided I'd had enough, so I can't be entirely sure of its demise, but I do not care to find out.
I'll go nurse the wounds resulting from being disappointed by one of my favorite current authors now. There is a slight possibility I'll return to this book and the author one day, but I wouldn't count on it. ...more

This is the type of book I would like for me to enjoy. I've always thought of myself as someone interested in science. I have also learned valuable details of how quickly DNA disintegrates and how difficult it is to extract ancient DNA without contaminating it. That's what most of the book that I've read was about. That and a few details of the author's life.
This is not a bad book. It just isn't what I need right now. I want some mind-numbing blood splatter to cool of my frazzled nerves. Not dusty Neandthertal bones. I want something which is easy to digest and which requires just enough brain cells to keep my mind off work - but not so many they exhaust my already depleted energy resources. Maybe I'll get back to this one day. More likely not. ...more

I did intend to start reading it again, but I simply cannot bring myself to do so. What Snowden revealed to us from the depths of the NSA is extremely important and highly relevant. The NSA can tap any phone and collects metadata from millions of internet communication. That's not very nice, to put it lightly. Snowden himself though, as portrayed by the book, was also deeply unsympathetic. That's probably one of the reasons I'm giving up just when the chase for him is about to begin - I don't really care what happens. ...more

Two vacations later, I realize, that I'm never going to finish. The book in itself is absolutely readable and my failure to finish is not its fault.
I even remember something interesting from it: mitochondria has only been incorporated into cells once during life's existence on earth. Some cells don't have mitochondria, that's true, but that's because they've lost them. Since mitochondria are the cells' powerhouse, multicellular organisms cannot develop without (at least not as far as we know). Thus, it might be that multi-cellular, intelligent beings, is far rarer than would be statistically extrapolated from number of solar systems, stars and universes. If you wan't more fun tidbits of similar nature, read the book. ...more
