It was beautifully written - the prose was wonderfully lyrical with a sense of yearning throughout. I loved the concept, a sci-fi The Little Mermaid 'retelling', although I will say that it's not really what I would classify as a retelling, as it takes place after the events of The Little Mermaid (albeit a different version of those events). And because of that, I struggled to care about the characters or the stakes - the story was too short for me to get to know them. Which kind of takes us to the crux of the issue - I think this story was too short in general. I understand the concept of a short story/novella, but this length didn't allow us to get to know the characters enough to care about the stakes, and didn't allow the author to adequately explore the themes, or even really the world that had been created (which, quite frankly, I want to know more about because it was so interesting), and it feels like a disservice to a story that could've easily been a 5 star read.
Like I said, the writing was beautiful, so I'm interested to see what else the author comes out with, but unfortunately I think this novella fell short of what it could've been. ...more
