Hawk is an angry, jaded, and hurt man. Who is also a good, honest, and caring person. With two "good" MCs to root for, this was an easy read and a fun romance to champion. ...I mean, who doesn't love a good pirate book? ;)
I also loved (loved!) Nethaniel's relationship with his sister. She was wonderful and loving and Nathaniel deserved to be supported by her (view spoiler)[after coming out (hide spoiler)].) Very sweet, and while I'm not normally a May/December stan, this felt natural....more
I didn't like Fable either, so take this for what it is. This is my third Adrienne Young book and I find them all to be tediousSlow -to boring- burn.
I didn't like Fable either, so take this for what it is. This is my third Adrienne Young book and I find them all to be tediously slow. And boring. Not much happens in any of them. (Sorry!)
Wanted to DNF many many times throughout Saint but gave it so (so!) many chances to become what should have promised to be an *incredible* romance between Saint/Elias and Isolde... and it just wasn't. This was the same kind of slow OG introduction story I found Fable to be. *shrug*

Alosa's parents: I liked meeting the sirens and seeing how inhuman they were. (view spoiler)[And obviously Alosa's father was evil & just using her. Both she and Riden had horrible fathers, and Riden's support after the reveal was *lovely.* ...Seeing Alosa's father sink under the waves at the end, was no loss to me. (hide spoiler)]
Riden: As a romance reader, I was 1,000% here for Alosa and Riden, and (view spoiler)[I LOVED that it was love/Riden who grounded Alosa when she was in "siren mode." (hide spoiler)].
Alosa's crew: This book had me falling in love with the crew of the Ava-lee. Mandsy, the supportive ship’s doctor, Niridia, the loyal first mate (view spoiler)[RIP (hide spoiler)], Wallov and his six-year-old daughter, Roslyn, Enwen, the funny superstitious recruit from book 1 (would have loved more of him), Sorinda, the silent assassin, and Kearan, the helmsman who also came along from book 1 (and who got sober in this book! Yay!).
4/4.5 stars for book 2. 4 stars for the duology. <3 ...more

It reminded me of reading/listening to Where the Crawdads Sing... And like Where the Crawdads Sing, there is a bit of a dark (morbid) mystery here to be solved. Poor Franny! Sad childhood story, sad tendencies, sad life. She is just so broken...and honestly, a little unlikable (a lot?), but I was just so with her. Got to love an unreliable narrator!
Rich storytelling, crazy characters, and a good/fitting ending! I gave this 1 and 3/4 thumbs up in my bookclub! ...more

Took me a little bit of time to get into (maybe it was the audiobook narrator?), but once I did I really ended up fascinated by/invested in/rooting for Alosa. It's rare that I end up rooting for the strong and cocky YA female lead (they can sometimes come across as a little too cocky, which reads both a little Mary Sue-ish and abrasive at the same time), but Alosa ends up pulling her weight in this one, and we do (eventually) see all the depth and hardship behind her skill... She has the backstory and the scars to prove she's earned it.
So, while I was a little slow at first to fall in love with this story, there is character development and depth, and some romance :), and I got there, eventually.
Also, the connection between Alosa and Riden was well built up. And while I like a good action plot, I was definitely here for the romance. :) (A whole chunk of the ending was very nerve-wracking!)
Bummer, but I just couldn’t work up any feelings for this book. I went in super excited to fall in love, and then, just, nothing. Fable was super slowBummer, but I just couldn’t work up any feelings for this book. I went in super excited to fall in love, and then, just, nothing. Fable was super slow & super boring. I didn’t feel any chemistry between Fable and West (I guess this is technically “slow burn,” but to me it read only PG “slow” and no burn.), and I honestly don’t care enough about either of them to read Namesake. Maybe I will for the sake of being a completionist, but also, who has time to waste on books that don’t move them? :-/
Sadly, this book was a victim of overhype on Bookstagram. The cover is gorgeous though, I’ll give it that. ...more
Pros: STRONG world-building. A cool magic system. And, a well-done political intrigue plot-line.
Cons: I never realStrong 3.5 rating inflated to a 4.
Pros: STRONG world-building. A cool magic system. And, a well-done political intrigue plot-line.
Cons: I never really cared for Amora so much. I don't know why, but I never got much out of her. I appreciate her strong sense of duty and loyalty, but I honestly (sadly) don't find her so compelling. Same with Bastian. He's a good dude, but I don't really care so much about their romance.
Vataea is a really cool side-character. Same with Ferrick. He was supposed to be an annoying love-triangle player for Amora (more like a barnacle), but he comes out as more than just that at the end. Good for him! (And maybe there will be something between him and Vataea in book 2!)
Will continue to read to see what happens/I'm interested in the politics & magic....more
