His mother is dead, and he hasn't returned home to visit his father in the two years since their last disastrous encounter at her funeral. He is also missing visits with his daughter. I didn't think that Malcolm was a particularly admirable person, although he improved over the course of the book.
Then he gets a dreaded call from his brother. Their father hit him with a chair and now Randy is too debilitated to care for him. Randy lives close to their father, and is married. His wife is expecting a child.
Malcolm goes to help out. It soon becomes evident to the brothers that their father can no longer live at home and he needs more supervision than either of them can give. He isn't safe to cook for himself, or to not flood the house, and truly is a danger to himself and others. He is also grieving the loss of his wife and has attempted suicide more than once.
I wanted to read this book because several of my family members have had this heartbreaking disorder and I wanted to get some new insights. I questioned the placement found for his father, where he had his own apartment, and meals were shared communally. It didn't seem to be a good situation for a suicidal man who had fits of violence, and was also not safe for the other residents. The book itself was well written and describes well the challenges that family members and those afflicted with this horrible disease face.

The main character, Roanoke (Ro) is a struggling author who invites five people she met at a diner on a snowy day to have Christmas dinner together, where they tell ghost stories and exchange gifts that must have been stolen. One of the stories told was about a Krampus, which I had never heard of. I looked it up and it is supposed to be a horned creature who punishes children on Christmas night who have been bad. The Krampus in this book was considerably worse. And it wasn't the only villain ...
Years later, when Ro has had some success as a writer, they plan another Christmas dinner where once more they exchange stolen gifts and tell their stories. This is a great book for horror fans. Some books you read and forget - this is not one of them.

I've alreadI heard Joni Mitchell singing 'Woodstock' in my head every time I read the title - there is a line in it about 'going back to the garden'. I've already read this book at least twice. There are just so many fabulous characters, past and present. The setting dominates the book - it is a huge estate with an imposing mansion and incredibly beautiful gardens, one of the few estates like this still in the hands of a family. The story is told in alternating timelines - back in the past when the estate was home to a commune during the 1970's, the time of brotherly love - and in the present, where a death investigation is taking place for a 40+ year old cold case.
There are so many fabulous characters. Raquel Laing, the inspector who came to do the death investigation in the present day. Meadow and Rob, who started the commune at the estate back in the 70's. Gabbo, the artist who created the sculpture for one of the gardens, and later became famous. Rob Gardiner and his brother Fort, who are the two surviving family members responsible for the estate formerly owned by their father (whom both despised). Rob had returned from Vietnam with a desire to avoid contact with most people. Fort had been living in India for a while in an ashram and had come home to visit Rob when the festival was going on.
There was a big rush to get Gabbo's statue erected so that the concrete could set before the crowds arrived. All the stress of the festival and the thousands of people attending turned out to be a breaking point for the commune, particularly for the two people who held it together - Meadow and Rob. After it was over, the residents started leaving, including Meadow. Fort left also. Rob stayed in his cabin high up on the mountain.
In the present day, some work is being done to stabilize Gabbo's statue. The workmen who removed the statue and busted up the concrete found a body underneath it, in a shallow grave. Rachel Laing is called in to investigate and soon develops her own theory, which I will not give away. Rachel is almost a human lie detector - she watches people to determines their 'tells' when she is questioning them. She is also working a separate case in this book, interviewing a dying man in the hopes of finding a serial killer who had killed hitchhiking women - also back in the 1970's. I sincerely hope Laurie King writes more books with this character.

When I first started reading this, I wasn't sure what had made me request it but I was soon completely invested in the story. Most women have fallen for a man who can't or won't love them back and this is one of those stories. My heart ached for Adelaide, and I so wanted her to dump this guy and move on. I am so glad that I read this story, and I urge every young woman - and some not so young - to read it. It was so good to see Adelaide recover and and discover that she already had all that she needed to be strong, and to live a full life - herself, her lifetime friends, and her family - and being strong in herself was the most important part of that.

I had not read other books in the series but didn't have any difficulty in following the story. It mostly takes place on the Holy Island of Lindesfarne in England. I had never heard of the island and it was so interesting - a place where Saint Aiden established a monastery in 635 AD.
One important fact about the island is that it is connected to the mainland by a causeway, which is covered over twice a day by the tides. This means that whoever is on the island when the tide is up is stuck there until it recedes, unless they leave by boat.
In this book, a group of five long-time friends gather every 5 years for a reunion on the island. They have been visiting the island for 50 years, beginning with the first visit when they were young teens in school. Over the years, the group members changed with the addition or subtraction of spouses but the core group remained the same, minus one member who died years before at their first reunion. She tried to leave the island when the tide was covering the road and drowned.
The group members are an Anglican priest (Philip), married couple Ken and Louise (both retired teachers), Rick (a media personality just fired due to consent issues with women) and Annie, who owns half of a very successful deli/bakery. On the very first night, something terrible happens to a member of their group, and the police are called in. DI Vera Stanhope arrives with her two assistants, DS Joe Ashworth and DC Holly Clark.
I found Vera to be brilliant at detecting but also abrasive and obnoxious. I really disliked how she treated the officers under her command - they were kept firmly under her thumb and she seemed to squash any initiative that they showed. She did appear to realize something about that later on. The ending of the book was a shock. I can only hope the next book comes out soon.

The book begins in 1828 when Robin Swift, a young Chinese boy dying of cholera in China, is nursed back to health by Dr. Lowell, who arrives from England just in time.
Dr. Lowell has been Robin's patron since he was born and has long range plans for him. He has paid for his upkeep and schooling in China, with an emphasis on languages. After Robin improves, he brings him to England to continue his education, particularly in linguistics. He plans for Robin to eventually attend Oxford and to study at Babel, a tower on the Oxford campus where the main study is language - every language, including dead ones.
Silver plays a big role in this book. Enchanted silver has many uses, including aiding in deciphering the true meaning of words. Robin slowly realizes that more is at stake then the pure joy of being a scholar. There is a sinister use for this understanding of language - power and domination. The Hermes Society, another Oxford group, opposes Britain imperialism. Robin is also courted by that group.
I learned a lot by reading this book, and began to look at history from a different angle. To the victor goes the spoils, and the victors also write the history books. I had not read any of those books and recommend reading at least a few of them before tackling this one as it is definitely not a standalone book. The plot is complex with many characters, and I kept having to look back in the book and try to figure out what was happening and who the characters were. The prologue in particular was very confusing without some previous background. I thought the book would have benefitted from a short introduction before the prologue to introduce the characters and their relationships and to set the stage for the story.
This book is set sometime after 1815 since Waterloo was mentioned. Beatrice from the previous series has married the Duke of Kesgrave. The main character in this book is Verity Lark, half-sister to the Duke, something that he doesn't know. They have the same mother but had very different upbringings. Verity grew up in an orphanage similar to the one that Jane Eyre grew up in - with little food or heat, no care or affection, and a lot of punishment.
As an adult, Verity works (disguised as a man) as a gossip columnist and publishes under the name of Mr. Twaddle-Thum, a version of the name she created for the awful woman at the orphanage. She discovers that someone has been clumsily impersonating her Twaddle-Thum persona, and has drawn the attention of a dangerous man. She is in danger, and so is the remarkably silly woman who impersonated her. The book opens when Verity has hidden in the woman's bedroom to foil an attack on her. I really liked Verity, who would disguise herself as a man and stroll into a business, take a chair and pretend to work while spying.

The Favor by Nora Murphy is about women in danger in their own homes. It made me uneasy just reading the sample. It is a standalone book.
Outside by Ragnar Jónasson is about a reunion of a four friends who unfortunately decide to go hiking and get lost in a blizzard. They take shelter in a wooden shack. Not everyone will survive... It is a standalone book.
Last Call at the Nightingale by Katharine Schellman is set in 1924 during Prohibition when liquor was illegal. It is a mystery - a young woman who works as a seamstress finds a dead body in the alley behind the speakeasy where she had gone to drink and dance. The writing is so vivid that I felt as if I were in that nightclub listening to that band and watching the dancing. It is the first book in a series.
The Gatekeeper is a thriller with a really interesting main character, Dez Limerick, a kind of homely, laidback fellow who is a musician and mercenary. Be prepared for explosions. It is the first book in a series.
A Rip Through Time is the first book in a new series by Kelley Armstrong, and it is excellent. It is about a modern day policewoman who literally falls back into the past, in Victorian England - when Jack the Ripper was active. The book does not gloss over the difficulties of a modern woman stranded in that time. I can hardly wait for the next book.
The Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier is one of the best books I've read this year. It is unforgettable - both terrifying and heartbreaking. A young girl with a terrible background grows up and escapes ... until something happens many years later that brings her to public attention. It is a standalone book.
Die Around Sundown by Mark Pryor is a murder mystery set in Paris during WWII when it was occupied by the Nazis. It is a very unpleasant occupation by people with grudges who are free to act on them. A French detective is given the (deliberately) impossible task of finding out who killed a German officer with only a list of suspects. He can't visit the crime scene and hasn't much to go on. It is the first book in a series
The Blame Game by Sandie James made me uneasy just reading the sample. The main character is a psychologist who works with domestic abuse victims, both men and women. She takes on a new client, a man, and shortly after some unusual things begin happening - like someone has been in her office. It is a standalone book.

She learned to dress and act so that she went unnoticed - one of her most important assets, along with her courage, always being armed, and on high alert. She is a member of the Hell's Belles, a group of intrepid women who help other women in danger.
Henry, the Duke of Clayborn, shows up when she is 'retrieving' something from her father's office at his headquarters in the slum where he runs his gang of murderers and thieves. Henry is there for the same reason as Adelaide - to recover something that was stolen by her father's gang, something very important to him. Henry is shocked when he recognizes Adelaide - he is more used to seeing her at dinner parties given by titled people - always quiet and unobtrusive. She is a master at blending in and being invisible. Adelaide ends up stealing both items, his and hers, and escapes, but Henry has not given up on retrieving his puzzle box. It holds a secret that he wants to keep sealed away. He also wants to figure out the puzzle that is Adelaide now that he really sees her.
There is a complex plot to this story, but what really thrilled me was the women of the Hell's Belles - women who help other women in the Victorian period, a time when women had about the same legal standing as children. Some of the characters in this series were previously introduced in two other series - the Scandal and Scoundrel series and the Bareknuckle Bastards series. I don't think it is necessary to have read the earlier series to enjoy this one.

While I enjoyed all three stories, my personal favorite was the story by Jodi Thomas. Reading about the quilts and quilting was so enjoyable. I grew up watching my mother making quilts, and have several of hers that I prize. She used embroidery floss to hold the layers together.
In The Secret Wish, ballerina Avery Cleveland has been forced to stop dancing due to an injury, and has come to the town of While-a-Way, Texas, to run or sell the quilting shop started by her great-grandmother. There is also some intrigue: who is the man who enters her shop after it closes and watches the streets? The sheriff suspects her of being an imposter at first, but that is soon cleared up - a good thing, as he also begins to want to know her better. This is a great story with romance, mystery and intrigue.
In Wish Upon a Wedding, quilting comes in when Ellie Winter's sister has planned a quilting bee for her bachelorette party. Ellie is not thrilled by the location - it is at a ranch owned by the man who she had been in love with years before. This couple had to overcome old misunderstandings to find their way back to each other.
The last story by Patience Griffin is about a woman whose job is quilting and teaching quilting. Paige Holiday is not excited to attend an annual quilt festival in Houston but she needs to promote her new designs. The last time she was there, she met a man who led her on and stole her designs. This time, she meets a man staying at her hotel who is with his sister who is also attending the festival - a genuinely nice man who persists in getting to know her.

She finds a lot of cash in her handbag, and when she reaches for her cell phone, she finds a bloody knife. She goes to her work place only to discover that it has a new name and that she had left for a new job several years before. She has words written on her hands - Stay Awake - and she doesn't know what they mean, although it is her writing.
Then she hears on the news that a man has been murdered, and that the police are looking for her - but someone else is also looking for her...Pray he doesn't find her first.

Aja is a young woman who moved to a smaller town - Greenbelt, Carolina - due to her panic attacks. Work is not a problem since her job allows her to work remotely. She knew no one there, so started going once a week to play bingo. Her bingo partner is a lady in her 80's.
Walker could not get out of Greenbelt, South Carolina, fast enough. Nothing could drag him back except for his grandmother, who raised him. When she fell and broke both arms, he moved back to help her until she heals.
He encounters a young woman - Aja - in Piggly Wiggly having a panic attack, and since he also has experience with those, he helps her to get through it. So a few weeks later ... when he takes his grandmother in her casts to help her play bingo, who does he meet there but Aja. I loved their romance.

The romance is between Kee Ildez and Varro Runkow, two characters who were introduced in the first book. They have a mission - to hunt down Commodore Merton, a character also introduced in the first book, who is trying to restart a war.
Kee decides to do research on him in a library located on a space station - and to get away from Varro, who she thinks does not return her feelings. Varro, however, joins her on the space station. I'd recommend reading the first book in the series before reading this one, to become more familiar with the universe and cultures. While I enjoyed reading it, there were a lot of things I didn't fully understand.

I enjoyed reading this book very much. Mattie Zook's family has sent her from Pennsylvania to stay with her Aunt Esther in Colorado. Her aunt has one I enjoyed reading this book very much. Mattie Zook's family has sent her from Pennsylvania to stay with her Aunt Esther in Colorado. Her aunt has one toddler already, and with another baby on the way, she could use the help. However, the main reason her family sent her was to get her out of their Amish community and let the people there cool down. Mattie has a strong instinct for social justice and is also so outspoken that she has disturbed quite a few people there.
Unfortunately for peace in her new community, the local city council decided to ban Amish horse drawn buggies from using most public streets in the community - a law that would require the Amish to travel much longer routes. Mattie's decision to run for city council herself was not popular in her new Amish community.
Meanwhile, her aunt was trying to entertain her by arranging frequent visits from a boy younger than she was (and colorblind) to work together on puzzles. Needless to say, he had a little difficulty with that. Mattie has another interest as well - a handsome local farmer, Freeman Sensenig, who is helping her with her campaign, even though he disapproves.

Her beloved aunt passes away the day after the wedding, and has left a request for Julie, a mystery to solve that involves her haring all over the country following clues.
The book was just okay for me, as I could not understand why she would stay with a man whom she really didn't like. I enjoyed the discoveries she made about her Aunt Edwina's first love, and being reminded of the sacrifices British people made during World War II.

The author is Scottish, and the setting, characters, and language all felt authentic. However, I wasn't tempted to book a vacation there as the usual description included words like cold, damp, crowded and gritty. Occasionally I would have to re-read a sentence to parse the meaning, but that didn't happen often.
The main character is DI Vicky Dodds (detective inspector). I really liked Vicky - she is trying to balance an upcoming marriage, children and her job. Vicki also has a secret that could ruin her if it was ever discovered.
She is assigned to investigate the murder of a man who was killed by having his skull bashed in with a hammer. When she is assigned a partner who also investigates police wrongdoing she is worried that he may be investigating her instead. However, she is not the only officer with secrets and hers are not as serious as some. This is the fifth book in the series, and while I looked back occasionally to refresh my memory about some of the characters, any difficulty I had in following the plot is because that this is a complex story with roots that go back years. I stayed up far too late reading this book and now plan to read this whole series.

I loved this book, could not put it down, and now I'm hoping I never see a rabbit staring at me. Or a pulsing lake. The setting is on the moors in Ruritania (a fictional country somewhere in Europe).
Alex Easton, a soldier, has received word that a childhood friend is dying and travels as fast as he can to the House of Usher. When he arrives, Alex finds that Roderick and Madeline are much changed from the last time they were together. Both are very pale and frail, but Madeline is much worse. They have an American doctor also staying with them, and he is baffled by Madeline's condition. The whole house is unhealthy - damp with fungus growing everywhere, even the carpets. The environment outside is no better. Madeline is also walking and talking in her sleep, but she doesn't sound like herself.
I loved the characters in this book. Alex Easton was born a woman and joined the military in his country of Gallacia as a sworn soldier, which means that he is treated like a man and also dresses like every other soldier. Because of that, I have referred to Alex as he/him because his country's language for gender is complicated. His horse Hob has a mind of his own and his own way of expressing his opinions. Another favorite character is an older English woman staying near the House of Usher who - fortunately for Alex - has a passion for studying molds and fungus.

I had only read one or two books in the series years ago, but had no difficulty in following this story.
Kate Burkholder is the chief of police in Painter's Mill, Ohio, but she grew up Amish in the small town of Belleville, Pennsylvania. She is surprised to receive a visit from Amish elders from her old town. The body of one of their bishops who had disappeared almost twenty years before has been found and it looks suspicious. Another Amish man, Jonas Bowman, is suspected of killing the bishop. They had a public disagreement soon before the bishop disappeared. Jonas remained Amish, and is now married and has children of his own.
Kate was asked to come because of her Amish background, history with the town and because she now works in law enforcement. Remembering the town brings back a lot of painful memories for Kate but she agrees to come and ask a few questions. It is especially difficult because Jonas Bowman was her first boyfriend.
However, someone in the town wants to stop Kate from digging in the past, particularly when she begins to look into the past of the dead man. She is attacked in her hotel room, is run off the road in a dangerous spot, and her car is vandalized. The local police won't help her, and many of the Amish won't talk to her. I did not guess who was behind it all.
I particularly loved the ending of the book, when Kate was back home with her fiancee. Visiting the past had also helped her to heal and she was looking forward.

One was "The Boxing Baroness" by Minerva Spencer. I had to read the sample just to see how the author pulled off something so unlikely - and the answer is she did it very well. Another one was "Where the Sun Rises" by Anna Gomez and Kristoffer Polaha. I winced when she had her accident and then when she dealt with her understandably protective parents. These books are a great resource for any romance lover....more

Family is at the heart of the Hidden Legacy series, and I've re-read every book in this series multiple times. I've already read this book twice. It starts out with humor but it rapidly moves into suspense and then the story takes off like a rocket. This is the third book where Catalina has been the main character.
The fun begins with the family visiting a large estate, since their old home had been destroyed in a previous book. Arabella, Leon and Bern were not happy about it until they turned around and saw the *other* houses on the property - including free-standing towers. Next came a situation about an incredibly expensive and even rarer spider - one of seven in the world - that had gotten free in the Baylor's conference room and hid. Catalina (currently head of the family business) had refused to accept this job and someone on her team went over her head. Oops.
Then things get serious. Catalina gets a call about a murder, and she can't reach Linus - which isn't supposed to happen. The action is non-stop for the rest of the book. While Linus is not available, Catalina as his deputy has to step up in his place, and has to deal with a dangerous conspiracy, one powerful enough to reach even Linus. Arabella also shines in this book but I won't give any more spoilers. It needs to be enjoyed as it happens.
This is a fine addition to the Hidden Legacy series, and I can hardly wait to see what comes next. My thanks to publisher Avon and Harper Voyager and NetGalley for the advance reading copy. These are my own opinions of the book....more
