Like Theroux's description of reading an author, rather than a book-- I have read a lot of his work, especially his travel writing. This book has some personal details & lots of ruminations about writers he knew. I was thoroughly engrossed in these diverse pieces, culled together for this anthology from so many different works & places. I loved the work & am grateful for his graphomania & readings....more

I read this book on one dank, dark, dreary day and I am glad I peeped into someone else's shelves and life for that day. Like any good book does- this book helped me walk in someone else's shoes for a while.
I think I use my Goodreads page documenting my reading life- the books I've read and the books I am thinking about reading. I enjoy reading books about books coz they are so meta- and picking up this book & reading the first paragraph convinced me that I must read this. I am sure once I'm done I will implore a friend .." you must read this"....more

The book was a saga of all the troubles that Zamperini and his friends and captors underwent and the history of the war. It was a surprising fast paced read. The shocking pictures and descriptions reminded me of both the futility and the overarching cruelty of war....more
