| This book was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review ! MARK DOWN AS: Boys in books who seriously need to pipe the fuck down UNHI This book was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review ! MARK DOWN AS: Boys in books who seriously need to pipe the fuck down UNHINGED incorporates and twists Greek mythology. It's a little bit Hades/Persephone retelling, but it's got big enough changes to not 'really' be one. Unhinged follows Spencer Perry (which to me sounds a bit like Persephone and I don't think it's a coincidence) a girl who's boyfriend Micah has recently died but is still hanging around as a ghost. Determined to bring him back to the land of the living as a fully functioning, living human she travels to the underworld in order to strike up a deal with Hades to get Micah back. PLEASE NOTE: I was really, really excited to start this book 1: Greek mythology !! 2: Hades/Persephone !! 3: ..... okay. I was just really excited about the Greek mythology elements I ENDED UP BEING REALLY DISAPPOINTED (tragic !!!!) --------------------------------------------------- LISTEN! The stuff I came here for (ie. mythology stuff) was actually really, really well done and I liked it. Unhinged adds alot of "twists" to the typical mythology story. For example, the Greeks got heaps of stuff fucking wrong. Hades' is actually called Hadrian, and he's not even related to Zeus or Poseidon at all. Chiron is actually called Charlie. Cerberus is a good pupper. (view spoiler)[ Persephone is a mad bitch (hide spoiler)] I LOVED the new take on mythology. Mythology has been done and done ALOT (and thoroughly by popular authors like Rick Riordan ) so I feel authors need to give it a new twist to really carry it. And I felt Chani Lynn Feener did that. The twists and changes to the mythology kept this feeling fresh and fun and also meant it wasn't too predictable. UNFORTUNATELY THATS KINDA THE ONLY THING I LIKED :/ --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- REASONS ME AND THIS BOOK HAD ISSUES → It was boring. Nothing happened, and I felt there was way too many reveals and things thrown in at the end and nothing in the middle. LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED !!!! It was just a lot of walking around and touring the underworld and it was boring. It didn't feel like things were moving along, and it also felt like the plot was a bit confused. I wasn't sure what we were actually reading toward, which made it frustrating. I didn't even know we were nearing a climax until it was randomly thrown in my face. Aka, plot structure was a little off. → Was not a huge fan of the characters. I found the main girl, so annoying and whiny. LIKE !!!! Tries to justify her wanting her boyf back with "it's not fair he's dead" smhhh okay good one. Anyway, did not see why everyone was pining over her because she was soo annoying. I did think she was kinda fiery in some parts, and I liked her stubbornness being incorporated as a flaw I just couldn't get into her. As for Hadrian ........ no. Just no. I didn't find him "swoon worthy" at all. I foujd him creepy. And obsessive. (view spoiler)[ and honestly the way he lied to and manipulated Spencer was abusive imo (hide spoiler)] → WHEN WILL LOVE TRIANGLES BURN IN HELL !!!! hell, we actually HAD boys telling girls to cheat/dump their boyfriends in favour of them. I hated the love triangle, and I hated how so much of this book was just this girl dealing with so many boys pining over her urgghghghhghghgh I hate that in books so much → Also, insta-love. Insta love AND love triangles you can see why I was bound to not enjoy this. → I thought the villains were weak, and were explained a little poorly. They randomly appeared and got a brief description and that was it. I needed more. → I didn't really understand the ending, which may actually be my fault because I was skim reading but still. URGH. Also, the love triangle survived the story and I want to die ((( they are just SO ANNOYING why do authors do it !?!? ))) → This book included the "let me show you how to do this thing" trope which I fucking hate. I cringe everytime. Stop. Letting. People. Teach. Other. People. Things. In. A. Way. Too. Emotionally/Romantically. Charged. Angsty. Way DESPITE THIS → Really, really liked the friendship between Sydney, Quinn and Spencer. Love to see good, strong female friendships. Loved that Sydney was the popular, blonde cheerleader but wasn't mean or a bitch but instead fun and well liked !! super cool !! I think this is a book other people may definitely like. I feel the love interest is very up some people's alley (Just not mine) which may make this more bearable. Personally I just found it a little bit too boring to get into, and there weren't really any characters I enjoyed or rooted for. GIVING THIS A 1.5* RATING. ...more |

I've rece I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review! [image] When I was approved to read this book I was so excited. I've recently been to Japan and safe to say I LOVE IT and I want to get back there A.S.A.P I was SO KEEN to read a book set entirely in Japan, featuring an all Japanese cast of characters which heavily incorporates Japanese culture and traditions. Like ... I was SO READY for this book which is why I'm so annoyed it was really *clenches fist* .. disappointing in the end I REALLY WANTED TO LOVE THIS BOOK trust me I did but I had so many issues *cries* [image] THE PLOT So what is this book actually about?. Aisuru is the story of a girl named Sakura, who due to an incident in her past is now terminally ill. After the passing of her guardian, she lives alone and friendless in Hakodate Japan. Kazuki, meanwhile, is a Yokai and crown prince of the kindgom Throklana. Some troubles force him to seek shelter from an old friend, the man who used to be Sakura's guardian. Instead of meeting Ito Hiro, he meets Sakura and his life and hers begin to intertwine At first the plot began really nicely, chapter one and two set it all up quite nicely. Kazuki is nearly murdered by his brother Yuji and must flee thus meeting Sakura. I really liked thing but then ..... but then LOOK ALL THIS BAD SHIT IS GOING ON IN THROKLANA AND NOTHING HAPPENS WITH IT UNTIL LIKE THE LAST FEW CHAPTERS ?? Like supposedly the kingdom is in turmoil, the king is missing, the princes are fighting, the people are in uproar and it literally gets mentioned at the start and then not again until the end like wtf PLEASE don't tell me ur kingdom is on the edge of actual war and/or uprising then leave me hanging ? Also, I found the plot twists a little bit predictable, and I guessed most of them very early into the book which was a bit :// PLUSSES on the plot though, I liked the ending! I liked it was not too cliche, was a bit realistic and left everything a bit open ended GOOD SHIT But basically, this book is boring. NOTHING HAPPENS. And while that would have been fine if the characters could carry the story .. they just weren't interesting enough to do so thus leading me to THE CHARACTERS I just .. I just didn't like them. No wait, fall back. Let me explain. I liked them, but I hated they had such little development and were not very complex characters. Sakura I liked more then Kazuki, but I felt Sakura had 1: Hazel Grace Syndrome 2: Was sterotypical anime'ish But overrall she was okay. I liked her tone for describing the events, and I liked she was quite no fuss, I didn't even mind how weepy she was. I just found her kind of boring, she wasn't particularly complex or flawed and she was just a little bit too sweet, too perfect Kazuki was .... he was ... so annoying he's the kind of character alot of people like he's very Dorian from Tog Or Nikolai from Grisha (I cannot w/ those types) ((Ok I can with Nikolai my bb)) ANYWAY he just annoyed me so much, and I found him a tad bit creepy. He just irritated me like holy shit fam leave Sakura alone AND GO DEAL WITH YOUR BROTHER AND YOUR KINGDOM WHICH IS LITERALLY FALLING TO PIECES !!! Like sheesh !!!! I can understand why the people are gettin a bit salty at their rulers tBH I liked Karasu though !! I wish he had more story and backstory because I liked him as a character much more and I felt he had the most character development I also liked Akari and Hina as friends to Sakuru, and I loved the friendship between these girls. It was cute and nice and I love to see girl friendships blossoming in books! ps. did not mean to use the term blossom in this book review full of cherry blossoms but now I see I did it and I'll take it. THE WORLDBUILDING wooo hooooo !! Now I get to talk the good stuff. I LOVED THE WORLD I loved the development of Sakura's area of Hakodate, and all the explorations of that area. I felt that the images of Japan were really vivid, and even though I was never fortunate enough to go to Hakodate myself, I feel I could easily picture and undertand what it looks like. I also loved how so much authentic Japanese culture and tradition was involved, and I loved that the book utilised the traditional patterns of Japanese speech. It made it seem much more authentic and I really appreciated that All throughout there are links to see translations and explanations for the use of the traditional Japanese terms and I loved that. I am really so glad the author kept in so much cultural elements in the story. I was super disappointed with the worldbuilding of the fantasy Throklana though, but that sort of been covered in plot. I just felt the magic system didn't make sense and the entire situation was ignored. Also, there was a bit where even the character was saying they didn't know how their magic worked like whaaaat !!?? ROMANCE openly weeps. I hated it IT CAME OUTTA NOWHERE. Like, ok they were crushing, but the next second they were 100% in love and doing da nasty. It was fuckin too much esp since 1: Kazuki is like Sakaura's dads bffl 2: Kazuki is hundreds of years old 3: and Sakura is like 17 which is gross 3: IT CAME OUTTA NOWHERE Also there was a sex scene AND IT WAS GROSS like I just didn't like it sorry ( I think others may) ?? I am not a huge erotica fan so I was like nope nope nope NOPE at least there was no love triangle [image] IN CONCLUSION Despite everything the cover is still bomb af I LOVE IT The writing was fine, if not a bit simple at times I don't really have much to say there THE BOOK IS GORGEOUS ON THE INSIDE. The use of the cherry blossom headers is top notch 10/10 approve I am just so ... [image] why couldn't it have been better thoooo OVERRALL 1.5* FOR AISURU ...more |

| "You have very pretty eyes" he said softly. "They look like diamonds" This book .... THIS BOOK. I truly, truly don't know how I feel about it. Do "You have very pretty eyes" he said softly. "They look like diamonds" This book .... THIS BOOK. I truly, truly don't know how I feel about it. Do I love it, do I hate it? I just do not know (Which, btw is a pretty shit opener for a review. Hello, today I will be reviewing a book I both loved and hated) I just ... I just don't know. THERE WERE BITS AND PIECES I REALLY LOVED and then there were bits that literally made my eyes roll into the back of my goddam skull due to how cliche they were. This book is definitely one for fans of The Mortal Instruments ! It follows much the same premise. A young girl is thrown into a magical world hidden from the eyes of regular people, whilst finding out she is unknowingly one of these magical people. THINGS I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK ✦ it was free on amazon. Yeah, whatever. I'm a cheapskate, and I'm broke. Free books are good books ✦ The set up of the magical world. I liked that the centre/origin of the world was in The Czech Republic and that the characters traditionally spoke Czech. It just felt like it was something new and refreshing in an area that has been really overdone and explored. ✦ Ilyan. I loved his characters, he was my favourite. However, I do think he could have used some further development tbh ✦ I liked that bad shit happened because I feel it raised the stakes and generally made the story more intense ✦ I also really liked Wyn as a character - and Ovailia ✦ I feel like it set up the series well, and I am genuinely excited about where this goes even if the first book by itself wasn't my favourite, I feel the series as a whole has great potential [image] THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE AS MUCH ✦ I'm sorryyy but I just hated the main character so much. She was so whiny, and just ... urgh! she was so frustrating. 1: Has intense guilt about something that obviously isn't her fault. 2: Is a beautiful girl but thinks she's ugly 3: She's such an amateur but acts like she's a master and I'm like GIRL pls respect your elders ✦ There is a lowkey love triangle and I am NOT DOWN ✦ It was really tropey and cliche. I didn't like the romance much, it was just too much at times and idk how to feel about it. I went from really liking Ryland to literally cringing about him every few minutes and it was frankly exhuasting ✦ Mean Girl Trope™ I hate it. Its the worst freakin trope. I SINCERELY HOPE OVAILIA GETS JUSTICE PLS MAKE HER MORE THEN JUST A MEAN GIRL PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ✦ The baddies were too much. They were just too over the top evil for me to take seriously. I didn't feel like they were complex villians, they were more the insane, murderous, sterotypical hitler style villians. They were just too over the top for me to engage with u know? ✦ Found the writing style a tad too simplistic sometimes [image] TRULY this book is a conundrum. Maybe it's because I went in with low expectations that were definitely surpassed - but I don't know how to feel. I think it's one of those books you just can't take too seriously, it's sort of fun and fluffy but not really well developed in any aspect. It felt like characters, world building, plot were all good and yet they needed something to make them better I think I will continue with this series, because it seems to be set up really well to have good potential. I'm hoping that there will be lots of character development, since I think that was lacking lots in this book. Overall, I give this a 3.5*. It was much better then I expected going in, and for a debut novel I really enjoyed it. I will be continuing this series ! ...more |

Within the gaseous folds slept clusters of unborn s There was a nebula there, an explosion of dust and light, the fiery corpse of an ancient giant. Within the gaseous folds slept clusters of unborn stars, shining softly. THIS BOOK this stunning, beautiful, complex piece of sci-fi. I love you. I love you and you have me so shook. THIS is what my universe looks like, THIS is what I see when I imagine what the universe which if filled with over 60 tillion planets could look like, this is the voice and the direction I yearn to see more science fiction taking THIS IS SPACE like you've never seen it before [image] There's no doubt The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is absurdly charming. I mean, just that title is bizarre, yet delightful. This whole book is like that. It's ODD, maybe a bit much for some people, but oh my god it's delightful. Becky Chambers creates a space story that's unlike any I've read before. The sheer magnitude and complexity of the universe system, and the species that fill it is outstanding on it's own. This is a truly creative and breathtaking novel -- and one which looks at our world today and offers a universe where all we see WORKS, or at least tries to. This is an incredibly progressive book and I love it THIS REVIEW IS MAKING NO SENSE THOUGH Maybe I should start with what it's about. It's the future. Humans fucked up. Earth is dead, we had to leave. We enter space, live on Mars .... aliens are so fucking real. The planet is filled with them .. all different species. There's one's with scales and feathers, some that communicate through swirling colours on their cheeks, some that come in pairs and are non-binary. There's aliens that start as female and become males. There's aliens with power, aliens without power, aliens who's species are going extinct, aliens who are warring with themselves. And humans are a blip. Just another species, a new member to the Galactic Commons (Kind of a space European Union) But this book isn't about humans - talking about humans, how very speciescentric of me This is about a ship. It's about a group of friends, lovers, enemies. This is about the crew aboard the Wayfarer, a multi-species tunneling ship who's job it is is to create wormholes in space that essentially act as space highways. The crew of the Wayfarer: You got your humans, Rosemary, Kizzy, Jenks, Corbin and Ashby. You got an Aandrisk, Sissix, A Grum, Dr Chef. And a Sianiat, Ohan. And their AI, Lovey. This crew is hired to create a new tunnel to the new members of the GC, the Toremi. But it's not even about that. It's about all the stuff in the middle, about what happens on the long way to that small, angry planet. And it's amazing, it's incredible. It's complex. It's actually such a joyous read. [image] HONESTLY, this review is sucking. So here's what I'm gonna do This book is underrated, and it's amazing. And I think everyone needs to read it, because it's so fucking clever. So here is TEN REASONS YOU (YES YOU) SHOULD READ THE LONG WAY TO A SMALL, ANGRY PLANET 1: The title is a fucking delight. Like, I know thats maybe not gonna instantly sell you on the book but seriously the title is so good and I love it. It's absurdly catchy. 2: The cover is pretty (don't even TELL ME you've never judged books by their covers smhhh) 3: The world building is detailed and complex. Do not think this book is simple, it is not. The universe is expansive, and it's features so many different species of aliens. All with their own cultures, behaviours, politics, and features. These are aliens who's beliefs so fundamentally challenged mine as a human, and not only that THE FACT EVERYONE IS SO DIFFERENT IS SO OFTEN ADDRESSED. This is a system where aliens actively try to understand and comprehend eachother, but often end up doing things that are insensitive on accident. This is a universe where things are not the binary ideas us humans cling to. There are aliens who have no gender and so use they/them pronouns !! there are aliens who are cold-blooded !! there are aliens who cannot speak !! there are aliens who lay eggs !! there are aliens who have multiple family systems and aliens who suffer from specific alien viruses and aliens of all different shape, colour, type, culture. It's amazing, and the intricate way the humans/aliens try to relate to eachother, and be compassionate of eachother despite fundamental differences in their morality/beliefs/culture is amazing. 4: It's a new take on science fiction. This book felt really new to me in a genre that's been written in ALOT. For a start, its got a distinctly feminine voice. Men dominate science fiction, and having a book that felt feminine, that felt a little more empathetic (?) in some ways then science fiction which is often straightforward and factual was refreshing. I loved that. I also loved the complexity of the aliens (Because I hate that in alot of sci-fi aliens are like humans). Overrall, it just felt new. It's felt refreshing. 5: It's accessible to non-sci fi readers If you don't read Sci-fi alot, I think you can still really really like this. It also does away with the complex terminology and space mumbo jumbo that often pervades science fiction and instead is just about people - who happen to be in space. And while it's still got many sci-fi elements, it's not cold or withdrawn like some sci-fi. This lets you get involved, lets you immerse yourselves in the characters lives and in their world and feels much more friendly and welcoming then some science fiction on the market. 6: It is incredibly diverse. The aliens aside, it features LGBT+ and non-binary characters, an lgbt couple, as well as people of varying race/culture and religion. It includes a main character with dwarfism (which does not dominate his character) and all these issues are ..... well they're not issues. That's the amazing thing. These are not stories ABOUT people being gay or having physical disabilities. These are just characters, and some of them happen to be gay ect and it's okay. It's all okay, and it's amazing. I also love, like LOVE the humans didn't speak English. I love that it's moved beyond thinking of our world so narrowly and has so incredibly expanded the horizons. I love that some of the aliens use xe pronouns, or some don't have any gender, some change gender to male or female or neither. I love that even amongst humans there are different pieces of history that have effected human nature and that the diversity is treated so complexly it's honestly mindblowing and you need to read it to understand 7: It's character driven This may be a turning away point for some people, but if you, like me, love stories which revolve around characters you'll love this. This is very much about the crew on board the ship, and develops them and their relationships thoroughly. It's also just about people in general trying to understand and relate to each other, and if you're a fan of that I PROMISE YOU WILL LOVE THIS. The characters are incredibly well constructed, and I genuinely fell in love with every single one. They are all different, and all multi-layered people but each is so special and I love them all. Every character was incredibly well constructed right down to their fears, beliefs and morality being incorporated into the book and they drove this story amazingly. It also focusses on so many different types of relationships, found families, platonic and romantic relationships, between different species, between humans and AI's. Between all sorts. It's the best. Incredible female characters !! Including female mechanics (don't see often !!) and just kick ass girls in general. Also the male characters are great friends and lovers (some of them) but are not tropey and gross and I just LOVE the characters so much 8: AI THAT MAKES YOU FEEL. In this world, AI are a big deal and there are full committee's dedicated to AI rights. And the AI in this is so ... so lovely and will tear your heart out 9: It's progressive, thoughtful, and offers a little bit of a metaphor for our world now. This world, this beautiful universe where people attempt really hard to understand despite obvious differences could be us. It looks at alot of social issues and implements them into the world in a positive way. It also touches up on some ways we can be more tolerant. For example, I loved how Rosemary is always reminding herself to be less "human-centric" (ie. judge other cultures by human standards). I thought it was a good metaphor for trying not to be eurocentric. I love that this world offers legitimiate solutions and ideas as to how we can overcome cultural barriers to make living and working alongside people we may not understand completely easier, and it's a book which preaches so much respect and love of neighbour. It's also a bit philosophical and thoughtful, looks alot into human nature and the human condition, and some of the things we do as people which are kind of crazy. 10: It's a bit of fun Despite everything, it's an incredibly fun book. A wild ride through unfamiliar space, with a crew thats both wacky and wonderful. The characters are insane, and some of the things they do are just odd. Meeting the new species, experiencing cultures which are crazily bizarre is fun, and getting to picture and imagine all these new species with their outlandish appearances and behaviours was honestly a bit of an imagination workout -- which I LOVE. It's just a feel good book, in a feel good world where everything seems a little less bad and so it was nice to inhibit for a while. A BOOK FOR FANS OF: Illuminae (for alot of reasons), The Raven Cycle (if you like how it's abt characters you'll like this too), Enders Game, Star Wars, and dozens of others. I really think this is a book alot of people could enjoy. “All you can do, Rosemary – all any of us can do – is work to be something positive instead. That is a choice that every sapient must make every day of their life. The universe is what we make of it. It’s up to you to decide what part you will play.” ACTUAL RATING: 4.5* ! ...more |

| “Three dark queens “Three dark queens haha this book ? I AM ETERNALLY CONFLICTED A thorough guide of what I was thinking while reading this book start: "Oh, actually this is super interesting. love the set up of the world and the queens" 100 pages in: "Okay. This is a bit boring, and there are so many characters I am a little confused. I'll keep reading" 200 pages in: No. This is not good I'm not enjoying it. The plot is too jumpy and inconsistent, and I hate the characters. I will give this 1 freakin star mark my words. I HATE THIS WITH SO MUCH PASSION 300 pages in: actually, I take it back. this isn't so bad. It's getting closer to Beltane now. I still hate some characters, but it's getting much more interesting. finishing it: HOLY SHIT. I can't believe Arsinoe !!!! and OMG Peityr DID THAT. That bear !! THAT FREAKIN BEAR. ohmygod Mirabella & Arsinoe !! Katherine !! THIS IS CRAZY me later on: But despite the ending, I still hate the characters and lets be real the middle was awful. I still don't know who some characters are. I don't know how to feel about this book [image] Honestly straight up what I think this book has is a marketing issue. When this book was pitched across booktube (and I'm pretty sure those reviews were sponsored) I was hearing about this being a massive, fight to the death battle between three sisters so one could be queen. I was expecting it to be like The Hunger Games: Queen Edition. And I know I was NOT the only one with that assumption. This is DEFINITELY not the Hunger Games, there's not even a battle to the death so if you're waiting for that ... don't hold your breath. I put this book down for a long, long time Like, a few months. And when I picked it up again with my expectations reset I enjoyed it alot more. If you're going into this you NEED to have your expectations straight. It's a very political book, with the fighting between the sisters done is a much more subtle way. It's not bloody, gory and dramatic like the Hunger Games this is a completely different thing. WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE • THERE IS AN ABSURD AMOUNT OF CHARACTERS. !!!!. And it's so confusing. Who the fuck am I reading about now, I'm sorry ? Who's mother's brother is this ?? Is that his cousin or his sister ?!!. It's just way too much, and they're not explained well at all so I was just incredibly lost and confused except for the main characters • WRITING STYLE. This is written in present tense, which I wasn't a huge fan of and it jumps around alot. Every chapter is about a different character, but that wasn't too bad for me. What I didn't like is how the plot kinda meandered and randomly changed directions. It wasn't always cohesive and that had me a little ..... what is going on • JOSEPH !!!! WHAT A FUCKBOY I HATED HIM SO MUCH. On a scale of 1 to 10 for despicableness of a character Joseph is a solid fucking 11. He's just a terrible person !! and his actions are inexcusable !! and I literally don't care what u say I hate him for all time • and while we're talking about SHIT boy characters Pietyr was also a terrible fucking person and sooo creepy and I highkey hate him • Lack of representation. I LOVED that it was a matriarchal society, but in terms of rep this fell really short. There was no lgbt rep, and no characters who were poc and everyone was able bodied. So, yeah. LAME. • It was boring in parts. While I think it was a political book and so wasn't going to be the fastest, there were parts where characters would just be talking and it was SLOW. Or when an event would be repeated just from a different characters point of view • The characters were okay but not the best in terms of depth and complexity. I'm kinda gonna give it a get out of jail free card here because it IS the first book in the series, but STILL I think the characters were not the best. While they each had a unique voice which I liked, they weren't all /that/ complex which was kind of disappointing WHAT I ACTUALLY DID LIKE • Political intrigue. Yes bitch I'm all ABOUT THAT. I loved the subtlety of this book with it's political themes, and the way the differing political structures are vying for power. I loved that the governing systems were ambiguous in their morality and none of them seemed to be a great options, and I loved there was so much questioning of the traditions and also structures like the temple and the priestesses. • AMAZING female friendships ! There were soo many solid friendships between female characters and it was great ! I also liked there was good male/female friendships and that they were incorporated into the story so naturally. • The matriarchal society/ worldbuilding in general. In this world, the Queens have three triplets and then they must leave. A council rules for the queens while they grow up, and then the queens fight eachother and whoever wins becomes the queen - becoming Queen also gives their families lots of political influence and power and so it's as much about the Queens friends as it is about them. The worldbuilding was AMAZING, really detailed and a super interesting society. I could not fault this book here it was really well thought out, and connected to the political aspects of the plot so perfectly. I also loved that the society was matriarchal, just because it was interesting af. • sympathetic characters. !! I liked that none of the queens were antagonised so you actually were rooting for all of them. It made it much more interesting because you didn't want any of them to kill eachother at all • The ending. SupER set up the next book and actually left me on a really excited note. I am not maly brainstorming the next books in the series tbh (view spoiler)[ listen. Jules is actually the naturalist queen. The priestesses wanted to gain power through Mirabella so they mixed the triplets up. Katherine has no power, she is powerless and was supposed to expose and humiliate the Arron's. Because they have too much power. Arsinoe is the poisoner queen and actually the Arron. (hide spoiler)] IN CONCLUSION Not the best book ever but not the worst. I wish I'd gone into this knowing it was a political intrigue book instead of thinking it was gonna be battle royale because I think I would have liked it more. I am actually kind of looking forward to the sequel though ! Even if it's not most highly anticipated. ...more |

I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as The Carrie Diaries. I was pretty disappointed, to be honest. Carrie was really annoying in this one. In THE CARRIE DIARIES, I felt she was flawed but still entertaining. In SUMMER AND THE CITY, I couldn't stand her. I just found her to be really annoying, obnoxious and kind of ridiculous. I'm not sure if she was meant to be, but it ended up really annoying me. Her arrogance was totally unfounded, and I just was going shuut uppp for so much of it. And I found the romance really kind of creepy, I didn't like the relationship between Bernard and Carrie and even though things "resolved themselves" at the end it was still weird. I just didn't like so much of the relationships between the characters. Samantha and Miranda were okay, much better than Carrie was but still they couldn't save the story. They didn't capture my interest in the same way Maggie, Walt and Mouse did in the first book. I ended up skim reading at least half of this, I was just ready to have it over and done with by the end. I don't know, I was quite charmed with the first book -- true, it wasn't remarkable but it was cute and fun and easy reading. I just found this one to be alot more tedious, and the "messages" were kind of force fed down my throat and I noticed. The subtlety of the first installment was lost here. Overall, disappointed in this one. It was a 1.5* for me. ...more |

Look, The Carrie Diaries is never going to win any literary awards for being a valuable exploration of teen culture, but it was a fun book. And I enjoyed reading it for it's entertainment value. I've never seen one episode of Sex and the City ?? And I have only seen one or two of The Carrie Diaries but it didn't really matter. This stands alone without those other influences. It basically follows Carrie Bradshaw, a school senior who's dealing with typical teenage drama - boyfriends, school prom, mean friends, dysfunctional families and the looming, uncertain future. When she starts school, a blast from the past in the form of Sebastian Kydd ( the HOTTEST boy in senior year ) turns up to ruin her life, and that's basically the story One thing I think really stood out is that, even though the drama was ridiculous and cliche, the dynamics and the aesthetic of the school and how the people and the groups interacted felt realistic. I liked that it transcended typical teenage / highschool stereotypes generally portrayed within books such as these and insisted upon the integrity and value of each person - it did not victimise or vilify one group or clique, but rather highlighted the hypocrisy and flaws of each. I liked that the faults of the protagonist and her friends were pointed out, alongside those of the "popular girls". I often find it disappointing how contemporary books dehumanise and vilify "pretty girls" generally because they are. Actually, that same concept was analysed and critiqued in The Carrie Diaries and for that I'm appreciative. The book had a unique voice and well-rounded host of characters which I felt really fleshed it out and made it more than just a contemporary high-school romance. Carrie's voice was domineering, but she was not flawless. I liked that she was challenged by both friend and foe for her behaviours and that she was not presented as being ultimately errorless. It was really refreshing, especially in this genre which I think typically has bland protagonists who possess little or no faults. The plot was fast moving, and it was easy reading - but not absorbing. The problems of the characters were really, really trivial. The characters issues were very white, fairly wealthy teenage which was fine, but not particularly engaging. It did deal with the topics it tackled well, though I felt it left the lgbt storyline hanging a bit which was disappointing - I would have liked to see it go alot more places. But other stories, including feminism, the repression of female sexuality and slut-shaming and the challenge between femininity and agency were well written. It was clear Candace Bushell places a great importance on writing gender politics and explorations and I suppose it is what she did best here. It's a shame the writing is basic and bland, because if it'd been a bit more exciting, maybe a little more rich this book would have been better. I also which the characters had been fleshed out alot more, especially some of the central supporting characters. (view spoiler)[ ALSO ! On a side note I was so happy Sebastian didn't end up with Carrie and he wasn't glorified because he was so shitty !! and I was so scared he'd get forgiven and have a cute romance w/ her and I was like NO (hide spoiler)] Overall, this was a really fun read and I liked it, but it wasn't outstanding. I think for a contemporary romance though, it was really well done. Contemp. romance is a genre I usually actively avoid so that I liked this at all is amazing. [image] ANYWAY ! I'm guessing the show and the book are reaaally different. Because everyone who watches the show LOVES Sebastian, but in the book he's ? not nice and he's not portrayed to be a good person sooo. ...more |

WOW ! this is a book I went into because h y p e I didn't know much about it (except it was in a funky format) but it ended up being SO MUCH better then expected. (But I don't know if I love it as much as some people .. it didn't completely live up to the hype) Illuminae is about the exodus of a planet colony, Kerenza on three ships, Alexender, Hypatia and Copernicus after their planet it attacked by a corporation called BeiTech. The people from Kerenza are being followed by their attackers -- and meanwhile things are happening ON the ship that is making their escape even harder. The story of the attack and the escape is told through files, audio recordings, chat logs and video feeds. The way the information is presented really does give the story a interesting twist - it's like a fresh of breath air in this genre which I think can be overdone. This plot is one I've seen many times but the format made it that little bit less exhausting. It's one of those books you get absolutely absorbed in. For me, the format helped me become absolutely engrossed. I turned the pages and admired the pictures and traced the words as they swirled on the page and it made the whole experience so much better. [image] I thought this cool format would come at the sacrifice of character development and atmospheric writing, but surprisingly the characters and the feel of the story doesn't suffer at all. I really LOVED the characters. Ezra is my son he had my laughing so much and I loved the way he talked and acted (view spoiler)[ when I thought he was dead I WAS SO MAD LIKE WHAT THE FUCK (hide spoiler)]. Kady is the coolest !! person !! everything about her is so precious, she's passionate, determined and brave and her determination to tell the truth about what happened on Kerenza got me shook. I love her. (Also, highkey the fancast its done and it's Fernandy Ly ok) AIDEN is weird to me - I won't say I "like him" but I will give that he (it?) is an interesting character, and that the perspective on the events is also interesting. While I thought the characters were well done, I do think they could have been better There characterisation is by no means BAD, but I just think they could have been deeper, more complex characters then what we were originally shown. [image] (^ she's Kady ok. It's done) ooh boy! and let me say plot wise this is ACTION PACKED because of the way things are written, you feel like you're flying through it. I thought the first 150 pages were kind of slow, but around 150 things really started to speed up. The last 200 pages were absolutely MAD and there was so much happening. Action wise, this will keep your flipping those pages insanely fast. It was gripping. I finished the whole thing insanely fast, partly because the format and partly because of the action. One thing I liked it that it was so twisty turny you had NO IDEA what was going on. Sometimes you thought you had it sorted in your head only for a massive curveball to be thrown in and change things. I liked the plot twists and things at the end and thought that the suspense this book hit me with was off the charts ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ ~ ☄ ~ There is so much hype around these books, and it's easy to see why. The fresh new format, mixed with the interesting characters and fast-moving plot make it stand out from other ya and other ya science fiction. Even the romance was well done and none too sappy or annoying or distracting and I am so glad. Really excited to read Gemina now, and really glad I liked this ! ...more |

She also felt like maybe she was a condescending brat. She wanted her bike. She wanted her friends, who were also one-thousand-year-old condescending brats. She wanted to live in a world where she was surrounded by one-thousand-year-old condescending brats.” ACTUAL. 4.5* I can't believe it's over already. This series is so important to me. Something about it is so truly captivating and magical and thrilling. I've read alot of books, and alot of series. And this is one of the few that has really captured me, that has really pulled me into it's world. I dreamed about these book. I spent long days thinking about when I could get home to finish these books. I told people who don't read about these books because they are SO GOOD. I love it. I love the characters, the prose, the plot. The complications, the friendship and relationships. I love the magic and the joy of life and the emotional current that floods this book. The Raven Cycle should win an award for, worst premised book of all time. Like, seriously. The blurb does NOT do this series justice. This is so, so much better than that tiny description we get. For the last time I'm going to describe what these books are about, and I'm going to try do to it well. Because if you haven't read trc yet, YOU SHOULD. I hope I can convince you. Because these are amazing and people deserve it in their lives.
It's about magic. It's about the power of friendship. It's about late night adventuring. It's about first kisses and first loves and first experiences. It's about the breathlessness of discovery, the wonder of the world. It's that feeling when you drive late at night in the car, with the windows down screaming your favourite song as the stars flash overhead. It's the feeling of being alive, of being vibrant. It's the fear that comes with being alive, and the wonderfulness of being alive too. This is about finding yourself: finding yourself in Gansey's anxiety, Blue's wonder, Adam's resilience, Noah's strength, Ronan's boldness. It's about looking at the world and seeing more, about appreciating the magic - in the ordinary and the extraordinary. It's about growing with people, through people and into people. It's about so, so much more than it's shitty little premise. “It was just that there was something newly powerful about this assembled family in the car. They were all growing up and into each other like trees striving together for the sun.” Talking about this book specifically, I found it just as enjoyable and thrilling as the others. I was immediately sucked back into this world, even after leaving a gap between reading this one and the last, Blue Lily, Lily Blue I enjoyed the plot enormously, and I would count some scenes (eg. the "going away party", the Toga Party, the epilogue, THE BIT WHEN RONAN GOES ON A THREE PAGE RANT ABOUT SCHOOL AND THEN GETS OVER IT WHEN ADAM FLIRTS W/ HIM LIKE THE TINIEST BIT) as some of my favorites in the series. I loved the bigger role Henry played, and I found his character to be interesting, add a new dynamic to the group and I liked that he offered a challenge to the group. I like that he was so much more than he seemed, and that he was so much more than he could ever portray. I found him to be complex and dynamic, and his personality being such a stark contrast to the boys we've grown so used to made his presence so noticeable and refreshing. Beside Henry, other characters again stole my heart. Blue owns this ass well and truly for all time. And despite earlier grievances of mine toward Adam, he's now probably become my favourite. Ronan will always be my favourite asshole, and his dialogue here was the most funny it's ever been. There were a few things I didn't like as much: I still don't really understand the end (view spoiler)[like ?? what happened with Noah and Gansey like what (hide spoiler)] and the end felt rushed and not properly ended. Also some of the things said about Henry was kinda :// (alot of people called Racism on it and I tend to agree in some respects and yeah) I mean, this was not perfect at all, there were some flaws and yet I think there was more good then bad. “No homework. I got suspended,” Blue replied. like omg I love him. “To think you could have been dreaming the cure for cancer," Blue said. "Look, Sargent," Ronan retorted, "I was gonna dream you some eye cream last night since clearly modern medicine's doing jack shit for you, but I nearly had my ass handed to me by a death snake from the fourth circle of dream hell, so you're welcome." CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW THE BLUENON BROMANCE FLOURISHED IN THE RAVEN KING Gansey got me in this one. I felt like he well and truly took centre stage and I felt for him so much. I have so much love for Dick III (view spoiler)[THANK THE LORD JESUS HE SURVIVED (hide spoiler)] I wish Noah had been in it more. That's my one complain. Noah needed to be in it more. He's so important and even though he ultimately played the most important role, I still missed his presence in here. Once again, Maggie Steifvater's prose shines. She is able to imbue so much magic into her writing. She is able to make it feel so vibrant and moving and interesting without being overly flowery. I like that she delivered that feeling of wonder at the mundane through her words. Her prose is truly, truly amazing and adds so much to this book and this series overrall. The plot was much faster moving in this one. While it doesn't trump The Dream Thieves plot, I think it was my second favourite. The 'villian' was well explored, and I liked that the book offered insight into even the smallest of characters. I liked that Stiefvater acknowledged all her characters and gave them each a place in The Raven King. SPEAKING OF PLOT. What about !!! the ships !!!! Pynch HAS MY HEART I mean lets just “When Adam kissed him, it was every mile per hour Ronan had ever gone over the speed limit. It was every window-down, goose-bumps-on-skin, teeth-chattering-cold night drive. It was Adam’s ribs under Ronan’s hands and Adam’s mouth on his mouth, again and again and again. It was stubble on his lips and Ronan having to stop, to get his breath, to restart his heart. They were both hungry animals, but Adam had been starving for far longer.” Like, they kill me. I also really loved Blue and Gansey in this one. They are so cute and I love them so much and I love their relationship so much. “It was this: Gansey starting down the stairs to the kitchen, Blue starting up, meeting in the middle. It was Gansey stepping aside to let her pass, but changing his mind. He caught her arm and then the rest of her. She was warm, alive, vibrant beneath the thin cotton; he was warm, alive, vibrant beneath his. Blue slid her hand over his bare shoulder and then on to his chest, her palm spread out flat on his breastbone, her fingers pressed curiously into his skin. Look, I'm not doing a good job at this. I'm just GUSHING. But that's all I'm capable of doing. These books have literally rendered me speechless and that's no easy task. I just want everyone to know this series is magical. Like, plot wise and how-it-makes-you-feel wise. Every character is unique, each is complex. Each makes you emotionally attached. The friendship is perfect and meaningful. The plots are intricate and well constructed. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. It will make you feel everything. [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] I love the raven boys so much. I'm going to miss them so much. They deserve the world. I'll literally never stop thinking about them, like, they are so real to me. I hope they're doing ok. I love them so much. I love this series so much. I will never let the raven boys (and blue!) leave my heart <3 The head is too wise, the heart is all fire raven boys review || the dream thieves review || blue lily, lily blue review ...more |

He's such a clever and well constructed villian and I find him to be one of the most cunning and intriguing characters because his motivations and aims are never 100% clear and I like that. Some iconic lines though "beware of jealousy, for it is the green eyed monster" I mean it's classic Shakespeare. Also I feel so sorry for Cassio bc he honestly just came out here to have a good time and then he gets attacked outta nowhere by Iago and peer pressured into drinking too much like it's not really not a great time for Michael Cassio Also Iago is such a drama queen lmao I mean "I am not what I am" pls you're so pretentious don't quote the bible to me But yeah don't love it, definitely don't hate it. whAT A GOOD DAY TO THINK ABOUT ANDREIL AND HOW THEY ARE THE GREATEST THING TO HAPPEN EVER IN LITERARY HISTORY ANOTHER EDIT: You know how I'm always ta whAT A GOOD DAY TO THINK ABOUT ANDREIL AND HOW THEY ARE THE GREATEST THING TO HAPPEN EVER IN LITERARY HISTORY ANOTHER EDIT: You know how I'm always talking about how Andrew is my favourite character ever but I can never decently explain why I found this on tumblr and it puts words down okay Do you ever just hurt when you think about all the times Andrew must’ve taken beatings from his mother in Aaron’s stead? And how he almost killed a bunch of guys for being homophobic towards his cousin? How Andrew would literally stab anyone if he saw a mere scratch on Kevin, if Kevin gets a simple paper cut, if a single hair on Kevin’s head is ruffled, but would voluntarily split his own knuckles open without a second thought? It hurts when I think about Andrew’s hands around Kevin’s neck, how he almost blinded himself in pursuit of Neil after he was taken away. His disregard for the terrible, terrible act that had been committed against him, the violation of his own body; while he stared deeply into his brother’s eyes, afraid of the blood he wore that wasn’t even his own. Andrew’s fiercely protective streak could be seen to be just as human as it is perceived to be inhuman because that is how he shows his concern and the warped sense of love and family that he feels towards these people. Andrew Minyard was a victim of brutal abuse and instead of victimizing himself he was only ever so stronger for it. He looked at himself and saw something that was already far beyond saving but he would do anything to keep his inner circle from a similar fate, he would take a thousand beatings if it meant that this makeshift little family he’d found himself a part of didn’t get hurt. He literally never does anything without a reason and his crap sense of morality reflects the sort of awful environment he grew up in. He has killed to protect someone that he loves and I have no doubt that he would do it again. To him, the end justified the means. It’s not a healthy or acceptable way of thinking but for Andrew it was the only way. Yes, there’s no denying he’s messed up. No, he isn’t a good person, not in the basic sense, but he’s good where it counts. And that is just one of 2036372883 reasons why he will forever be a character so very dear to my heart Anyway ... it's not everything I would like to say about Andrew and how proud of him I am and how he makes me cry everyday but it's something --------------------- Better then that bright future was what he already had. A court that would always be his home, a family who'd never give up on him, and Andrew, who for once hadn't wasted their time denying that this thing between them might actually mean something to both of them. NOTES ON THE REREAD: - NEIL JOSTEN IS MY BABY !!! I love him so much. I mean y'all I have NEVER seen a character verbally drag someone on the same level Neil Josten drags like HE DRAGGED RIKO STRAIGHT TO HELL FIVE TIMES IN THIS BOOK EVEN WHEN HE WAS DYING ON THE FLOOR HE COULD CALL RIKO A PIECE OF SHIT. anyway I love him so much and he deserves all the happiness in the world - I finaLLY understand Andrew I mean I DID the first time by the end but I understand it so much more and everything makes so much sense and I will FIGHT anyone who shit talks Andrew Minyard because he has dealt with ENOUGH already w/o that and he's just I love him so much he's doing his best I'm so proud of him. But no shit Andrew is such a well written, complex character and I love that Nora Sakavic didn't sacrifice his character and wrote him honestly and he's just such a good, good character I love him - Kevin 'I've never been skiing' Day my son tbh he owns Exy so much and like he's just such a fucking dweeb when they go on holiday but he stays inside and reads history books #NERD. But anyway his whole drag and the way he OWNS the court literally daddy (ok when he comes in w/ the new tattoo and he goes out playing left handed MY FAV FIGHT THEM KEVIN FIGHT THEM) - Wymack is like the single least problematic person in the world he's such a good dad 2 them all and he's just such a great person how does he do it anyway tbh none of them deserve him but anyway - DAN AND MATT ARE SO CUTE !!!! FAVE HET SHIP !!!!! THEY ARE SO GOOD IM GONNA SCREAM - Allison: I aint getting sex. Nicky: Maybe if you ask Kevin very nicely "Kevin made a noise that was not human" omfg - tbh literally just Kevin's reaction to everything. constant sigh @ the team. constant irritation @ Neil. Trying to keep tiny irresponsible children in line whilst drinking vodka like its water HONESTLY Kevin is my third fav behind Neil and Andrew but tied with Dan I love him so much - Allison is such a queen and tbh be my irl friend - Aaron is a piece of shit he can go die tbh the bit when he's like "ur sleeping with Andrew bc he's 'easy pray'" kys Aaron TBH if you're one of those people who hasn't read this trilogy yet you probably should because these book fucked me up long time !!!!!! like wyd !!!!! it's so good everything about it from the plot to the characters (mostly the characters) but serious this trilogy is easily all time fave I even rate it above the raven cycle (shocking!) its just SOO GOOD. ORIGINAL REVIEW ------------------------------------------------ "All my love to you: to the person holding this book, who took a chance on Neil and the Foxes and Exy. Thankyou for believing in something crazy with me" [image] I don't know why but I loved the authors note at the end. Maybe because I can't believe I managed to get so attached to this. I mean, a sport book?? That I'm now invested in for life ?? I can't believe I've fell in love with this much crazy I binged read these all in like, a week, and now I'm so sad to see it all go so soon ( why don't I read slower, dammit! ) Anyway, I guess I should talk about the actual book. ------- The King's Men picks up right where The Raven King left off. This is something I really like about these books - they don't have that annoying 3 chapter long reintroduction to the story at the beginning of each book that's basically filler chapters. It jumps straight back into the narrative and I love that so much. In the third and final book of the series, things between ( literally everyone ) are heating up. I felt like the pacing here was so good. There was never a dull moment I felt like so many things were packed into these 370 pages - without it being overwhelming. The pacing in every book is fantastic, but this one managed to pack in so much genuinely good plot points, character development and fun things like games and sniping conversations between the Foxes. I want to absolutely commend Sakavic for the movement of the plot here. All the necessary revelations and outcomes and things we wanted plot wise were finally given to us. It was so much plot and story moving, without ever dragging down the fun of the series which has always been the characters and the Exy. There is so much suspense, so many high tension scenes and so much grit. I love that these books are so dark and gritty and awful - but also fun and lights and hopeful. I love that these characters so through so many terrible, terrible ordeals and trials and tribulations but they still get up and keep going and we get to share both sides of that with them. Everything - the characters, the games, the overarching plots and the side plots blend so seamlessly I love it that so much is going on, without it ever being overwhelming. Everything we were waiting for happened, and it was glorious The series continued to be incredibly emotive to me. These are scenes and characters you really feel and who break your heart and make you cry and laugh and get angry. Ah, the characters. They are truly all assholes but I say that with the absolute height of fondness in my tone. There was so much character development here for Neil, Andrew, Allison, Dan but ESPECIALLY Kevin. I loved that so much. The characters are so central and driving in this story, if their plot points and development and dynamics weren't up to scratch you'd definitely notice. But in The Kings Men they shone and I'm so glad. Over 3 books I've come to know and care for all of them so much, and I'm really going to have a hard time letting them go. These books are just outstanding, exceptional. In the way they deal with trauma, in the way they show character development both great and small (yet touching, important, monuments in it's smallness ) The writing really has impact and I felt like I was totally immersed in the story. You know when you completely forget you're lying in your bed grasping a book because really you're right there with the characters, experiencing what they do, feeling as they do, as if you're standing right beside them?? That's me with these books. I'm going to miss these kids so much. I'm going to miss Dan fiercely objecting to anyone messing with her team. I'm going to miss Renee's quiet determination. I'm going to miss Allison's ridiculous splurge spending. I'm going to miss Matt's on-court fights. I'm going to miss Aaron's grouchiness and perpetual bad mood. I'm going to miss Nicky's loud mouth and endearing lact of tact. I'm going to miss Kevin's callous comments about no one being good enough and exasperated sighs everytime Andrew or Neil instigates a fight. I'm going to miss Wymack telling everyone to shut up. I'm going to miss Andrew's deadpan rebuffs and Neil's total inability to stop himself starting a fight. I'm going to miss Exy games and Kevin fangirling over UCR Trojans and Bee's cocoa and Sweetie's ice-cream and Roland's sly comments and the never ending bus rides. I seriously encourage everyone to read this or at least think about it. It's hard to explain what it is exactly but trust me this is the most heartbreaking sports team you'll ever come across and everyone needs to acquaint themselves with the Palmetto State Foxes. Never, not in a long time have I come to truly care so much for so many fictional characters. So long, my Foxes. I will miss you all! (Until the next inevitable reread anyway) (Thank god Nora Sakavic has a blog where she's published SO MUCH extra content I need more Foxes ASAP. ) my official foxhole court playlist bc I'm lame [image] ...more |

"He was their family. They were his. They were worth every cut and bruise and scream" ---------------------------------------------------------------- "He was their family. They were his. They were worth every cut and bruise and scream" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am honestly incapable of proper speech. This was AMAZING. This deserves ten stars. This deserves to be heralded. These books are S O G O O D This is me right about now: [image] MY EMOTIONS ARE NOT IN CHECK !! I AM DEAD. !!!! RIP MY SOUL. Okay. I'm going to try to keep it together so here's a little summary of this series. The Foxhole Court is about alot of things. It follows Neil Josten, the son of a famous crime boss who's running from his past and his father. While hiding in a small town known as Millport, he is asked by Kevin Day to play Exy for the Palmetto Foxes. Kevin is the assistant coach of The Foxes, a renowned Exy player and also someone from Neil's past he'd very much rather avoid. I thought this book was definitely better than the last one. It had literally no slump at all, but picked up exactly where the first finished. There was NO point in this book which was more boring than anything else. Like I'd get to a section and be like "oh sigh this is going to be boring " and then NOO bOOOOOM it was one of the best bits in the book I CANNOT BELIEVE how fast paced it was. Even though it's a book which is character driven, at NO POINT is it slow. Many of the issues I had with the first book, such as it being confusing with all the new characters/terms were resolved here simply by merit that it was the second book and I knew what was going on. I feel like I need to address the characters since they are literally THE highlight of this whole thing. There was SO MUCH character development. I mean, I thought these characters were pretty well developed in book 1 and then Sakavic just goes and doubles, triples, QUADRUPLES the amount of character development we had. I was so, so happy to finally hear Renee's story. Renee is such an intriguing character to me and I really love her alot. I love that she took a bigger role in this one and I liked that Neil and her finally had a proper conversation. She's such an angel. "I'm a bad person, trying very hard to be a good person. But I would not be trying at all if it were not for the outside interventions in my life. I love Renee because she doesn't try to pretend to be anything she's not. I love that she recognises her past and tries to move forward from there. Nicky calls her an angel and I agree. I appreciate that her character is not undermined or "weakened" because she is nice. I love Renee alot, and I feel she's a character we don't see much, especially in ya and especially in sport centric books. Dan and Matt were so much better in this one. Dan especially had me cackling and she's so fierce and strong. I love her & admire her alot. It was nice to see her take a more prominent role in Neil's life and to see her history and backstory. I also loved that Matt was more involved with the team as a whole and that his past was also explored. I LOVED THAT HE INVITED THE MONSTERS TO CHRISTMAS. AARON. A A R O N. SOO much development. So so much backstory and history and explanation to his shitty behaviour. He just made such an impact in this book & WHEN NEIL HIGHTAILED IT THE FCUK UP TO HIM TO SORT HIM OUT fucking #bless I was so glad. But on a serious note Aaron was sort of a mysterious and weird character who groused from the sidelines and I'm glad that much more development was invested into him. His dynamic with Andrew is so incredibly heartbreaking and he's just so important to the boy and vice versa and I really need him and Andrew to sort things out. Nicky was Nicky. He and Kevin took more of a backseat in this one but I thought it was ok. I feel they were both so involved in the first book it was nice to set them aside and hear from others. However, where they did come into play I really really enjoyed their chapters. Anything involving Erik was good when it cam to Nicky, and everything involving Andrew/the arrangement/Ravens when it came to Kevin was good too. LOVED that Nicky bridged the gap between the monsters & the upperclassmen. Nicky is so important the fact he uprooted his entire life to care for Aaron/Andrew even though they're both asshole I was just .. Nicky is good people NICKY IS SO GOOD. I wish Allison had been in it more. Thats my one character complaint. But I did really love the way she stood up at the games after what happened to Seth and I'm so proud of her she's a queen. Ok welps getting down to the business end of the game I guess bc Andrew and Neil. I'll start with Neil. OKay. Neil. NEIL HAS CHANGED AND GROWN AND DEVELOPED SO SO MUCH IT'S ACTUALLY BREATHTAKING. Neil has just ... it's just spectacular the amount he's grown and developed. I love that he's trusting people, I love that he's taking a prominent role in people's lives. I love that he cares & loves for them. I can't believe how in 181 pages he's given SO MUCH development in a way that wasn't rushed or forced but just worked and flowed sensibly. Neil learning to trust those around him, learning to fall back on them in times of need and learning to even love them is so, so heartwarming. I feel like I've invested so much into his character already and seeing him develop positively is the best pay off it's like he's my actual son. I love that Sakavic can so easily surmount so much development into just little things. Wymack asking him "Are you okay?" And then Neil answering "No. No I'm not Coach" had be REALLY EMOTIONAL because it just showed how he's developed and how he's learning to let people in and admit he's not fine and he's willing to accept help from others it makes me sob like a proud momma. Ok Andrew. Now we need to talk about Andrew. [image] In many ways, this series could be described as a study of "what the fuck is it that makes Andrew Minyard tick". And man. MAN. This book gave it to me. It gave SHOVELS of it to me. (in the most upsetting, heartbreaking, distressing way) Andrew is a constant enigma, but I feel like I finally get it, I finally get him. (At least a little more than before.) And it's so, so saddening to see his story unfold because he is a good person, he really is. It's just that his goodness has been buried under alot of bullshit that happened to him. But urgh. I just feel like Andrew is such a fractured & broken figure, and he really, really makes me love him and hate him and feel for him AND I WILL CRY FOR HIM IF HE DOESN'T CATCH A BREAK SOON. ------ This books just have such a way of grabbing you and drawing your attention and making you care Like I care so much and these are very short books. All of the foxes have captivated me. Their characterisation, the world building, the dialogue, the pacing, literally everything is perfect. This series is a blessing, and everyone should read it. I can't wait to start book #3. I've heard it's not smooth sailing but I'm hoping they can pull through. They HAVE to beat the Edgar Allen Raven because those asshole need to GO DOWN. A few gifs on my emotions in the book: When Neil hightailed it the fuck up the Aarons to sort out the mess w/ Andrew. When Neil promised to protect Kevin & Andrew gave Neil his car keys and they did that gay asf shirt touching thing and Wymack was like lmfao you's are so gay and Neil was like ??? bc he's a dumb dumb (they're my otp omg) [image] When Neil told Coach Wymack he wasn't ok and he did need help [image] WHEN NEIL SHITTALKED RIKO AND THEN PUNCHED HIM DIRECTLY IN THE FACE. . (Also when the Foxes were allowed to play on after losing Andrew) [image] Renee telling her story and also informing him Andrew's gay asf. Nicky getting the monsters to come to Matt's for Christmas. Andrew agreeing to Halloween with the upperclassmen. [image] ME WHEN I FINSIHED THE BOOK: [image] In conclusion I'm blown away by how good this was LOVED IT SO MUCH my official foxhole court playlist bc I'm lame ...more |

| Superman fears nothing because outside a few very specific circumstances where he might encounter some stupid rock, nothing can possibly do him in. Superman fears nothing because outside a few very specific circumstances where he might encounter some stupid rock, nothing can possibly do him in. Batman has the same vulnerabilities as the rest of us, so he has the same fears as us. That’s why he is the most courageous: because he can put those aside and fight on regardless. My point is this: the more you have to lose, the braver you are for standing up There are some books that keep you entertained.. and there are some books that touch your soul. Jasper Jones is a real soul toucher. It's a beautiful book, about growing up and discovering things about ourselves and others. It's a book about good friendships, strong friendships and unconditional friendships. It's about standing up to those who unfairly keep us downtrodden, it's about confronting injustice and small-mindedness and it's about first loves and it's about so much more. It's set in Australia, 1956, small town called Corrigan. It follows our protagonist, Charlie Bucktin, a bookish boy of 13 who's in love with literature, terrified of his mum and eager to leave the small town to head to the city. Enter Jasper Jones: Half Indigenous Australian, the town "delinquent", not as bad as people would have you believe. When Jasper Jones comes to Charlie's window in the middle of the night, to desperately ask him for help Charlie follows, and soon is embroiled in a mystery about the town that's bigger then both him and Jasper. It's hard to explain exactly what this is about without spoiling everything, but it was intriguing to me to the very end, and surprisingly, I actually remained completely clueless until the great reveal, I didn't guess anything that was revealed at the end. The beauty of this story is in alot of things, but one highlight is the characters. The main three characters, Charlie, Jasper and Jeffery Lu are so different to eachother but each has a great dynamic. Charlie serves as an honest and raw protagonist. Jasper is an interesting, dynamic character who's presence immediately lights the book up - he was endlessly interesting. And Jeffery Lu is hilarious, genuinely made me laugh out loud while listening to this more then once. I loved his and Charlie's dialogue and banter - but I loved too that he had real sides to him, hard edges and the way he moved this his space in society due to his race was honest yet saddening. I honestly don't know how to explain this book, except to say I found it honest and raw - I found it did not skate over the icky bits of history, it did not shy away from portraying Australian's as maybe we don't like to be seen. And I'm glad it didn't do the whole "the bush will revive me as a human" thing that all Australian authors seem to do. It was realistic, gritty and awful at times but realistic. And I thought the discussions on race were accurate, and I think the way the characters were treated for their race was an honest discussion that had to be had. The blooming romance between Eliza and Charlie was not overdone or cringey, it was cute, slow-burn and I thought Silvey portrayed that breathless discovery of first love so perfectly. I loved the friendships, I loved how Charlie and Jeffery talked, I loved how Jasper and Charlie talked. Sorry means you feel the pulse of other people’s pain as well as your own, and saying it means you take a share of it. And so it binds us together, makes us trodden and sodden as one another. Sorry is a lot of things. It’s a hole refilled. A debt repaid. Sorry is the wake of misdeed. It’s the crippling ripple of consequence. Sorry is sadness, just as knowing is sadness. Sorry is sometimes self-pity. But Sorry, really, is not about you. It’s theirs to take or leave. Jasper Jones: a beautiful story about friendship and first love. An honest story about small-mindedness, racism and country towns. Funny, sad, disturbing, cute, quirky and honest - I loved the portrayal of Australia and it's people, I loved the mystery, I loved the romance, I loved the characters and the prose and everything in between. A really wonderful Australian novel, genuine and realistic. It's hard to explain exactly what is so captivating, and exactly why it has me reeling and why it's touched me on a profound level, but it has and this is in instant Australian fave. ...more |

WARNING. THIS REVIEW CONTAINS UNTAGGED SPOILERS !! Alright. Oh boy. This book was a DOWNRIGHT MESS. I mean, not only was it a mess, it was also incre WARNING. THIS REVIEW CONTAINS UNTAGGED SPOILERS !! Alright. Oh boy. This book was a DOWNRIGHT MESS. I mean, not only was it a mess, it was also incredibly offensive and poorly written and I just can't believe this is actually a published book I'm gonna just break this down and yeaH. CHARACTERS: Literally every supporting character is a stereotype. First we have Peter, who's African American and GAY. I put gay in capital letters because it's the main thing you actually know about him. All he talks about is being gay, his defining characteristic is that he's gay. He also affirms a dozen gay stereotypes - he always all honey and bitch and basically serves to give the main girl (Donna) his best friend relationship advice which is all (I'd tap that so you should too) yech. Then we have SeeThrough She's Asian, so get this, her name is actually a play on words of Sifu. She's also a martial arts expert !! and really smart !! Obviously, I mean, she's Asian so she has to be !! Also, she gets killed off for no reasons, just for a bit of male angst so the boys can feel all guilty and dishonourable about bringing a girl along. There's nothing quite like using female characters as plot devices!! Then we move into main characters. The main protagonist is a boy called Jefferson (yes, that's his actual name not an adopted Post-Apocalyptic name. His parents actually called him Jefferson, and his brother WASHINGTON) Jefferson was an okay (I say this tentatively) lead. MOST of the time he was pretty straight forward with the facts which was good because honestly I only cared about the plot but man he still managed to piss me the heck off. Jefferson absolutely reeks of male entitlement. Like he just walks about and is all ooh, I'm a nice boy. Why don't girls go for me, it's because girls don't like nice boys. Like not this kid! I know this boy and 99% of the time they are, in fact, not nice! GOD. So in his opening lines we have "Hey! One of the gunners responds when I pat her on the behind. It's that girl, Carolyn, the blonde who used to be kind of a fashionista before What Happened. Whoops. Even after the apocalypse girls still don't like to get slapped on the butt. GOD, JEFFERSON. Is it because getting slapped on the butt is jusT NOT ON man that's my body y'all can't just go touching it whenever personal space my friend, personal space. GEEZ. So next we have a nice little moment where Jefferson declares his undying love for Donna, expecting her to reciprocate or at least just be like thanks, but no thanks but instead she's like ????? because he chooses a moment WHEN THEIR LIVES ARE IN DANGER and she's taken aback so he shoots back with a All she had to say was I love you too. But instead she's starting fights. "Just try, try to love me?" kid, no girl gotta try to do anything just bc you're feeling under loved yikes ! I honestly can't with this bit the way he's so SHOCKED she's not responding as he plans is a joke. DONNA Man, Donna is such a mess she gets her own damn section. This is when we get into the real nitty gritty of the mess of this book. Donna is the alternate viewpoint in this book, and the female voice. But oh my god, she's no problematic!? Honestly, you can just TELL she's been written by a guy because NO GIRLS ACT LIKE THIS. (at least, ones I know anyway) We start off her narration with "The first thing you need to know about me, I'm not beautiful" [image] God! I don't care, Donna! But mostly why this annoys me is that it serves a wider purpose in this book, where all pretty girls are stupid, "sluts", unable to look after themselves and bitchy. Ironic, since Donna has to be one of the most awful, disgusting characters I've ever read. It's basically just serving the purpose to undermine the agency of any girl who might appear beautiful and it's gross. Men, especially, seem to use appearance to characterise females and honestly the way it was done in this book was shocking. Donna was this girl that spent her life pitting herself against other girls. Every girl she met was a bitch -- SeeThrough was skinny so Donna makes some comment about how terrible it is girls still think it's cool to watch their weight (??? it's the apocalypse Donna maybe she's just not eating enough like damn) Kath is immediately dubbed a "hoe bag", bitch and slut by Donna. In fact, Donna is absolutely awful to her, just because 1: Kath kissed Jefferson and 2: because she's a female?? I think ?? Donna is that "I'm not like other girls!!" girl, in which her value comes from the fact she's not like other girls, thus degrading every single "other girl". Sigh. My least favourite thing. (Lmao not to mention sexist. Girls don't need to disassociate themselves from their gender to be valuable) I think this is more of an author fault, but Donna's primary purpose is to talk about boys. Every conversation she has is about her feelings about boys. Every thought she has is about males. I don't think this book passes the Bechdel test even though there are female who communicate with just eachother (3, exactly) times. Each time, all they talk about is boys. There's even a scene where they have a "yes, I guess you've won the fight for the boy" talk. Feckon hell, girls don't like boys jesus!! Girls talk about boys in like 1 in every 100 conversations, probably. ME AND MY GIRL FRIENDS TALK ABOUT GARLIC BREAD MORE THAN WE TALK ABOUT BOYS AND MY FRIENDS HAVE BOYFRIENDS. Like, turns out girls do not constantly fawn over males, despite what they might like to think. The way Donna communicates with people is ridiculous. She speaks almost exclusively in Pop Culture references, uses the word like fifty times a page and says "anyhoo" and describe everything as "big ass". He pulled out his big ass sword, thats a big as lake. Blegh BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, she says things like STFU in dialogue. And not, stuff you, I mean actually says the letters S T F U to communicate stuff you. And it's supposed to be typical of teenagers like Donna is down with the kids™ but instead she kind of just makes me wanna cry because this is so inaccurate. (Now if she'd been saying surely and straight fire and thats so lit I could have believed it) TREATMENT OF RAPE AND USE OF RAPE AS A PLOT DEVICE This book contains, so much rape. Not the actual act of it, but it's a plot device. It's used to make characters dislike other characters. It's used as the reason why the big baddies are the big baddies. (those dudes rape girls, so they all need to die!) The thing is, rape is treated like this trivial thing that has happened to some of the girls but it's fine. Like, it's just swept under the rug, no worries when it gets down to it. Rape mainly serves as a means to give the male characters an opportunity to be honourable and take the moral highground. But when it comes down to it? These characters rescue a long-term (2years+) rape survivor and call her a hoe-bag a SLUT and a bitch. The fact she's a rape survivor is never dealt with, there are no repercussions on the mental and psychological health of the girl (who gets called her real name, Kath, about once and TITS MCGEE, the most degrading name I can think of for the rest of it) The treatment of rape in this honestly shocked me. The fact that is was talked about so novelly was awful and it absolutely was the last straw for me. The rape didn't even serve to develop female characters but instead developed the male characters. It was women being subjected to the rape, but in the end that didn't matter - what mattered was how it effected the boys. I can't even discuss how much this has effected me and how disgusting it is that authors continue to use rape as a meaningless plot device when it's an experience that effects the victim for a life-time But, as Donna would say, whatever. POP CULTURE REFERENCES Okay, at first I thought these were fun. The kids use a pop culture reference, or a hundred, in this book. At first it was cool, but it soon left me lost. Instead of describing a scene, it'd be like "This is just like Resident Evil" of "If you've seen this movie, you'd know what it looks like" Sadly, I haven't seen that movie so I don't know what the heck is going on. Also, the teenagers were weird about Pop Culture. Like, there's one bit where they are worshipping a plate with Edward Cullen's face on. It's just weird, and in my opinion, lazy writing. A pop culture reference can be fun, but using them to replace the task of describing a scene is lazy. You're an author man!! That's what authors DO. THE PLOT I guess this is where positives start? The actual current of events was okay, and the only reason I kept going with it. But then it stuffed it up by having a shitty ending and revelations that didn't make sense so urgh. Overall: [image] I'm just done. This was terrible. Do not recommend. If you're looking for a teen-world post apocalyptic to replace the Michael Grant's, Gone, size hole in your heart -- move along because this is not that book. ...more |

IMAGINE it's the mid 1800's, and Charles Darwin presents his groundbreaking research on the origin of species. But alongside that, he also presents a way to harvest "life thread" DNA from animals, and then fuse them with other animals to create new, hybrid species. Thus, the rise of the Darwinist nations -- countries which create these animal hybrids for war. Flying, whale warships, bats which will attack enemy aeroplanes, lizards which speak with human voices to relay messages. IMAGINE it's 1914, and Archduke of Austro-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand, has just been assassinated, triggering the beginning of The Great War. IMAGINE a world where the great powers of Europe fight not with guns, but instead with something much more advanced. The "Darwinist" nations, Britain, France, Italy -- fight with their animal warships. The "Clanker" nations, Austro-Hungary, Germany, Serbia fight with incredibly advanced and innovative machinery capable of taking down down the "beasties" of the Darwinist nations. ( and I mean, these machines are huge. Think the army of the Fire Nation in Avatar -- or that evil machine in The Incredibles) and IMAGINE a clash between the two, imagine World War One fought not with guns - but with massive mechanical war machines and animal creatures and flying jellyfish hot-air balloons and spider-dogs and a whole host of other things I cannot describe. THIS WORLD is what you get when you pick up Leviathan and I love it ! like, aaah, I can't explain how freaking COOL it is. Like I just don't have any way to explain this world except real freakin' cool. So what's it about? Well it's about two main characters - Aleksander, the son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Deryn, a member of the British Air Force. This book basically picks up on one of the great conspiracies of our time -- ( and debunked not too long ago ) who REALLY killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand? Conspiracy puts the blame on the German's, hungry for a war. So does this book. It opens on the young prince of Austro-Hungary, Aleksander. He's whisked away in the night after loyal members of his royal staff hear of his parents assassination in Serbia. Suddenly, the young prince is on the run - from the German's who killed his family, and from the Serbian's who are no friend to Austrian's. And it also follows Deryn, a young British girl with a passion for the "Darwinist" creations. She's determined to find herself on a Darwinist airship crew, but doing so involves masking her identity and pretending she's a male, since women are not allowed in the army in 1914 -- She's a Joan of Arc type. From there, the two stories grow, intertwine, grow some more. It's a real nice tale of the two characters separately, and by the way ! both are such really interesting characters. I enjoyed both their chapters equally. Aleksander was soo precious! he had a good amount of character development just in this one, and I swear I loved everything about him "As far as my granduncle is concerned, I don't exist Deryn was so feisty! She was absolutely hilarious, really witty and remarkably brave. I loved how she spoke to people and how she acted. She had a "swagger" that really made her stand out and omg she's just so cool like I wanna be her. “She was a soldier, not some girl twisting her skirts at a village dance.” WHAT ELSE WAS REAL FUNKY FRESH ABOUT THIS? Aside from the huge originality of the world building, ( and wow it's really original) there are a tonne of elements I really liked in this. - mix of history and fiction. LISTEN ! so much of this was based in fact. There were stories / characters / events that truly happened, and this was mixed in soo well with the fictional elements of the story. You could tell this was well researched and I am a massive history nerd so it was so cool to see that come across. THE ONLY BAD THING ABOUT IT WAS THAT MY HISTORY KNOWLEDGE SPOILED ME (view spoiler)[ as soon as Nora Barlow popped up I was like ding ding thats my girl Charles Darwin's granddaughter omg (hide spoiler)] - THE. PICTURES holy, moley. The pictures were so neat! I loved having a illustrated representation of the things described. It really helped develop the story in my head - like, they'd describe something and I'd be like hmm say what and then there'd be a picture which would make it so much easier to wrap my mind around the descriptions of the Darwinist creations of the Clankers and just yes. - Incorporation of Urban Legend. Okay, fun fact I'm a conspiracy theory HOE. I love em. Even though I've mentioned this, I love that this story is based around a "what if that conspiracy was real". Also, Aleks adventure gives me hecka lot of "Princess Anastasia survived the Russian Revolution" vibes and I love that. - action. packed. Seriously, the action never let up. It was go, go, go. And it had an element of panic and unrelenting energy which I suppose fits this tumultuous period in 1914. - oh, also did I mention this is really funny? As in, I was laughing out loud at the cheek of some of the characters and how they spoke anD THE LINGO THEY USED (because of course the book has it's own jargon) anyway, it was really hilarious in parts. Anyway, I was so totally blown away by this. I went into it knowing little of what it was about, and I was not expecting to absolutely end up falling in love with it. The characters, the world, the mix of history and futuristic elements, JUST YES ! so much yes. (ps. Aleksander mUST BE PROTECTED and Deryn is so fcking cute I love her so much omg what a bae) (p.p.s (view spoiler)[can't wait for Alek to find out Deryn is a girl and freak ye boi (hide spoiler)] ---------- Anyway, giving this a 4.5*! because it was just so freakin good - and like, I really want the next one right now and that NEVER HAPPENS. Also, this really really makes me wanna read more Steampunk ...more |

| “Do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living “Do you think I am an automaton? — a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! — I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal — as we are!” I don't think there is a whole lot I can say about Jane Eyre that hasn't been said a million times. It's a classic for a reason, and Jane is an iconic figure both as a women and as a character in literature for a reason. This is my first time reading Jane Eyre (though I have seen the movie for it) and I really, really enjoyed it. It is probably my favourite classic I've read. Jane as a character is so interesting, and strong. Being able to follow her story from childhood to adulthood as a reader was really fantastic. I was instantly drawn in by her character, I loved her passion and her strength and her independence. For a character written in the 1800s, she stands remarkably on her own. She struggles almost constantly against the prevailing attitudes toward women at the time, but the way she addresses and deals with them was amazing. I love (but kind of hate?) she's one of the strongest female characters I've read, and she was written so long ago. There was so much to like, aside from the romance. This is about Jane finding happiness in herself and her station and her discovery of family, friends, love and self-acceptance was beautiful. The moment she discovers she's rich and has a family and is so excited made me smile so much because I love her and I was so happy for her. Despite being a classic, lots about this is still really relevant today and I liked that. “I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself.” I really ended up loving this, despite finding the first section a little slow and I understand why so many people call Jane Eyre their favourite character. ...more |

reread 2021: still enjoy the ending of this series a lot, even if that's a super unpopular opinion. Still don't see why people hate Mal that much, another unpopular opinion. I remember the ending of this series being much longer though and it literally happens in one chapter? All up though, still a solid YA series though definitely not as strong as Six of Crows character-wise and King of Scars thematically in my opinion. WHAT A WILD CONCLUSION TO THE TRILOGY I honestlyy think the ending of this book was out of control. It was absolutely action-packed and I was left gaping at all the revelations through this book. The answers to so many questions were finally revealed and I LOVED that things didn't turn out as it seemed they would. This was a truly twisting, winding story that didn't let up for one minute once it got going!! I was HUGELY satisfied with the ending. It just felt right to me, how things ended up -- and I'm really thankful for that. The stresses were real in there for a minute. The world of the Grisha trilogy was so well-developed by the end. (view spoiler)[ the reveal of Morozova and his role in the whole ordeal, as well as that Mal is (kind of) the Darkling's cousin was absolutely stunning and unexpected. It added so much tension and drama to the story and it was really well done (hide spoiler)] How the story dealt with the Darkling was nice (view spoiler)[ I felt he got what he /deserved/. In my opinion, there was no way he could live/be redeemed because he had just, passed that point? But at the same time the way Alina treated his death was really nice and I was happy she wouldn't forget him and that /really/ he was just kind of lost and confused (hide spoiler)] The development for Alina (and Mal) continued throughout this book and I was happy with how it all ended for Alina. I thought her hunger for power was dealt with really nicely! I was really, really happy with this series, really enjoyed it. Thought this one STILL started off a little slow, but in the end I ended up so attatched to Mal, Alina, Nikolai, Adrick, Nadia, Tamar and Tolya, EVEN ZOYA. I can't wait to read Six of Crows now! ...more |
