Fantastic weaving of socio-biological-historical-environmental facets of life in Singapore. Although it probably has more meaning for anyone who has lived there I’d recommend it to anyone - and encourage the authors out there to research & create their own versions for their own environments. For those in education - great for TOK & environmental studies ...more

As always impeccably illustrated with just enough information to keep your interest and provide an overview on the topic.
A new feature is the "scan me" for some of the stories which leads to a downloadable "Rebel Girls" app with snippets of the stories - in order to get the full stories you need to pay which is a little deceptive.

Young Ooonga only wants to see a performance of Sitaharan but through his journey we learn more of the culture and struggles of his people. The writing, in particular the visual language in this is quite incredible- without seeing the movie I can picture the whole story unfolding in front of me. It is firmly in YA territory & the rape / stones / brutality would mean I’d put a trigger warning on it....more

I must admit it took a little time to get into it - there's something about script dialog that it seems artificial and unrealistic initially - you hear it and can just see the person on the stage with the spotlight on them - versus how it really would be in reality. However the story grows on you as it evolves and particularly the bits about the cover up, the dropping of survivors, the signing of disclaimers and the health problems of the people cleaning up the mess....more

It all is extremely plausible and I can see how some people would put this in realistic, while others in dystopian. Bit remind me of the (superior) "Blindness" of Saramago. The ending was where it all fell down for me. Seriously? It's all wrapped up and tied up in bows in a couple of weeks, both sets of parents survive and the worst that happens is a divorce and some deaths? Oh and a mention of PTSD. You see I don't see how a bit of martial law and mandating that the river is no longer diverted is going to fix what is essentially a huge long term problem. But then again it's a YA book so I guess we need to have hope. ...more
