1/17/23: Sometimes you just have to come back to an old comfort read to get you through a tough time. Anna & Charles have routinely been that for me, because it is so easy to find yourself caught up in the force of Charles's personality, the Marrok's quiet and cold enforcer who is deep down, buried under the weight of his duty, a good man with the heart of a born protector. Anna is traumatized after being brutalized by her pack, but she has an equally, unequivocally fierce and radiant soul. Seeing them click together by pure happenstance into this titanium-thick bond -- but newborn-foal-esque! New and surprising and endearing and with so much potential! -- is a never-ending delight to me. Their introduction is emotional, and serious, and a completely different tone than the main Mercy books in this universe. It's a testament to how clear and crisp their perfect harmony is that has made this series a success from minute one. I'll never get tired of reading their story and seeing it all blossom from this tiny, fragile moment into something timeless, beautiful and strong....more

This collection of fable & storybook retellings was no different, but those stories I did love truly stood out from the pack. Big shoutout to my therapist Ashley for recommending this to me to get me out of a particularly bad reading slump. I can't wait to check out the rest of this series to find more soul-bearing retellings of classic stories to fall in love with all over again. ...more

This book reminded me of feeling I got the first time I watched Interstellar, which is my husband's favorite movie, a film he has seen 13 times as of my writing this review. It made me feel so small but also a part of something so much bigger than myself in an overwhelming, humbling, desperate, beautiful way. Space is all-encompassing that way. The way that Becky Chambers describes people, just people, in space, is similarly all-encompassing and yet so powerfully, passionately human. It brings me to tears and blows my mind wide open. I'll never not love her books for that, and this one joins her previous novels in the special place in my heart carved out for this universe in the sky beyond my reach. Thank you for bringing a taste of it home to me....more
