The author personifies this problem in a former employee named Doug, who makes an appearance in almost every chapter to show us what NOT to do. The author sees the Dougs of the world as problems to be rooted out and eliminated, as shown in the author's "Hire slow and Fire fast" philosophy. The lack of empathy for Doug and people like him crashed against the chapter on "Empathy" with a resounding, hypocritic thud.
But don't worry. Doug will eventually find this book and retaliate with his own story about the author, "The Biggest Ego in the Room." Can't wait to read that one.
But if you strip out all the catastrophizing, blaming and ego from the book, you'd end up with a 5-star overview of areas and techniques to help engage and align your security team. Highly accessible writing, and it covers a lot of ground. For those reviewers who weren't able to finish the book, they probably missed how the book is laid out. The first 2/3 of the book regards personal and financial success, and does feel like it's written for used-car salesmen who equate success with money. If you look at Brian Tracy's other books, this shouldn't surprise you. Too bad those reviewers missed the last third of the book on Happiness, Health and Relationships. Chapter 21, Self-Discipline and Peace of Mind is the best part of the book, and something you'll want to reread now and then. I recommend starting with Ch21 first....more

I'm disappointed that the author wasn't able to connect his own thoughts of "living in the now" with Taoism, Zen Buddhism, or Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now. This would have aligned with the writing style better than pop culture references to Mad Men and Breaking Bad. ...more
I've been a fan of Ryan's work for a long time. Bought tickets to meet him once on his book tour. And I'm on his email reading list. Generally good stI've been a fan of Ryan's work for a long time. Bought tickets to meet him once on his book tour. And I'm on his email reading list. Generally good stuff, and his current focus of writing books on the pillars of Stoicism is a great idea. But Courage is Calling reads like it was written during nanowrimo, a bunch of writing experiments to see if he can crank out a 3-5page "chapter" each day and then group them into similar themes. Courage is the coherent theme throughout, but I can't say that reading these collected blog posts is going to make you more courageous, any more than reading People Magazine articles about famous people will make you more famous.
The afterward was interesting, Ryan talked about a personal situation where he had to make a courageous decision in his workplace. For the rest of the book, he's highlighting and commenting on the courage of others. But I found that afterward piece more moving and indicative of Ryan's credibility to write a book like this than the entire rest of the book. I'm not impressed that Ryan knows the courageous stories of a thousand other people, I'd either like to see some science backing the writing up, or personal experience like Ryan's. Too bad it was relegated to the afterward, I'm not sure everyone is going to make it that far before putting this book down. ...more
