But I especially enjoyed Honor Tracy's 1950 record of a night out on the town in Cork with a charming Professor. There's also an excellent and somewhat surreal account from a passenger of the Lusitania of how she survived the torpedoing of the liner and was brought to shore in Queenstown (Cobh) - which I might use in a future history course some day....more

You know that piece of advice for aspiring authors: "write what you know." It really does seem to be true that many writers know a lot about drinking - and that stories about booze often bring out the best in their prose....more
