Maaya’s story is a breathtaking spin on dark, fantasy romance. The world-building is incredible and immersive. We follow Maaya as she falls into the world of Alternity, and must quickly adapt from the life of a struggling college student to a heroine destined to save the world.
I made myself stop to savor this book. It would have been incredibly easy to binge.
There are twists and turns as we follow Maaya’s journey and truly feel her confusion, and later, her heartbreak. Her trauma and inner turmoil are very relatable.
The MMC will steal your heart. He has the best qualities we all love in a morally gray character with shadow powers and a checkered past. I was rooting for him long before the FMC was.
The sentence level writing is beautiful and the plot itself is incredible. If you love fantasy and romance, you simply must add Ascension to your to be read list!

The book follows up with Thea’s revelation and betrayal from the Prince of Crimson at the end of the first book. Still missing many of her memories, Thea finds herself confused and conflicted upon her homecoming to Cerithia.
Throughout this book, we walk alongside Thea’s struggle with both her amnesia (although far from medically-induced) and mental health.
My heart broke for her at every revelation of betrayals and lies she learned along the way. Thea, however, is an incredibly strong character. Nothing keeps her down forever.
The romance was so refreshing and a unique twist. Fantasy books often deal with impossibly stacked odds against star-crossed lovers, but Thea’s struggles are definitely unique. How can you reconcile loving your murderer?
This was such a great book! I forced myself to slow down and savor Shay’s storytelling. It would have been incredibly easy to binge in one sitting.
I cannot wait to continue following Thea’s journey. I highly recommend this book to readers of fantasy romance who are looking for a fast-moving story full of twists and surprises, and a main character you desperately root for.

This fantasy romance book has all the elements of intrigue that readers of the genre are drawn to and love. There’s a mysterious “shadow daddy” with “touch her and die” vibes, and the enemies to lovers trope. There are two goddesses and an ages-long war between the two. Their contention bleeds through into the mortal realm, threatening the very existence of all who hold it dear. The female main character is an unlikely chosen one facing formidable odds. There’s even a dragon.
The sentence-level writing is beautiful and descriptive. I was captivated by the world the words created, a land of sand dunes and bright stars with fearsome creatures lurking. The plot itself keeps moving and is very well done.

This second installment in The Veiled Kingdom series is just as intriguing as the first. The book is fast-paced and ends in a cliffhanger.
If you enjoy morally grey love interests and the intrigue of a fantasy world artfully woven into a romance story, you should definitely read this series! If you enjoy the enemies to lovers trope, "who did this to you," and political rivals' children falling in love, you'll definitely enjoy this book.
