I technically finished this FOREVER ago but I just cannot write a review for it. I have tried and tried but it's NOT happening. (I will def re-read this at some point, so hopefully I can do it then???) I REALLY loved this book but I just can't write anything that I feel does this book justice and also dual credit is kicking my behind (I write this in about every review but I swear it's true!) Also, this book made me physically sick, I was so nervous for the ending that I felt nauseous a few times, which was SUPER WEIRD. (I was just super emotionally attached) tldr: FIVE STARSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Anyway, I did make a list of RomanIris songs while I read this, so here you go: RomanIris Taylor Swift Playlist °•*⁀➷ invisible string °•* °•*⁀➷Timeless°•* °•*⁀➷It's Nice to Have a Friend°•* °•*⁀➷Paper Rings°•* °•*⁀➷Enchanted°•* °•*⁀➷Electric Touch°•* °•*⁀➷Sparks Fly°•* °•*⁀➷Message in a Bottle°•*...more

RIGHT NOW This has been a Public Service Announcement, you may continue on with this review!
After seeing almost every single one of my GR friends read this book, I finally hopped on the bandwagon and read it. AND MY ONLY REGRET IS THAT I DID NOT READ IT SOONER! I think that everyone loves when a book lives up to the hype and this one did not disappoint. (It might be my favorite book of all of 2024 and it's literally January 10th. IT'S THAT GOOD! Please do not read this review if you have not read Divine Rivals, I found it best to read this book flying blind and I have included some minor spoilers that are not tagged. Characters: Iris: I love Iris. I want to be Iris. I want to be friends with Iris. She's awesome. I love her subtle strength. She was a beautiful picture of femininity and I loved how she handled things. I would tag this book as 'she-is-so-me' but I am not Iris. I wish I was because she's amazing and wonderful and I cannot say enough good things about her. Roman: *intercom noises* Does anyone know where I can find a Roman C. Kitt for myself? If anyone could be so kind as to direct me to the queue for one, I would be forever grateful. I LOVE ROMAN (view spoiler)[CARVER (hide spoiler)] KITT. He was so sweet and amazing and the PERFECT book husband (notice I said husband, not boyfriend because that man is marriage material ...more

It's been a month since I read it so I'm not going to give it a full review because I can't remember it well enough to do it justice. But I read both books in less than 48 hours.
I’m writing on an iPad, so I must keep this short but I once again thought that tThe covers for these books are FANTASTIC.
Also, Cyrus+Alizeh endgame.
I’m writing on an iPad, so I must keep this short but I once again thought that this was the last book. WRONG
I just need Cyrus endgame, please, I love him ❤️❤️❤️ How am I going to survive waiting for TWO more books??? This one did get kinda spicy, so I am a bit scared for two books, I don’t think I can handle it....more
whatwhatwhatwhat. THIS WAS AMAZING AND I'M DYING AND I'M SO CONFUSED AND HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS WAS BETTER THAN THE FIRST ONE?????????MY DUDES.
whatwhatwhatwhat. THIS WAS AMAZING AND I'M DYING AND I'M SO CONFUSED AND HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS WAS BETTER THAN THE FIRST ONE???????????? M A G I C A L Also, if you haven't read the first book, go read it. Don't waste time on this review and possibly spoil the whole first book for yourself. Characters: Alizeh is such an amazing character. She is really strong but emotional. She was very confident in herself. I was getting sick of female MCs who are scared of themselves. Alizeh knew what she was doing. She was always coming up with a plan. She is smart and fends for herself. She is also super caring. She wanted to take care of everyone. She was constantly finding new information. I just love how complex and different she felt than other MCs. She was prepared to do whatever she needed to do to protect her people. I just loved seeing her interact with people. Also, the bread scene was so cute. It was a sad reminder of her past but it was super adorable. Kamran was okay. I don't think that he was bad, but that I just was so invested in Alizeh that it was annoying to be taken away from her story. I think that his story was still interesting, he was just super wrong all of the time. He didn't experience that much growth. I am ready to see him in the next book but I'm also kinda scared. (view spoiler)[ I don't want him to come and mess up Alizeh and Cyrus. I'm also super afraid that he's going to die for her. Alizeh needs 5 people to sacrifice to gain her magic. Currently, 5 people are flying to her. I have a feeling that they are all going to die. (hide spoiler)] Hazan: I was kinda annoyed by him in the first book. But in this book, he really had his time to shine. He was super sarcastic and I loved it. He literally had no cares anymore and it made him hilarious. His entire exchange with Kamran in the dungeon was so funny. (I don't like the use of language but there was one line where it was pretty amusing.) (view spoiler)[ I love the fact that he's a Jinn. It made everything better, especially when he just started ripping down doors. Classic. (hide spoiler)] Well, well, well. I save the best for last. Cyrus. I think we've established that I have a special place in my heart for tortured boys who wear all black. Don't ask me why. I also love that his people love him. He's not a villain to everyone and he is actually good in some instances. I don't know the exact terms of his deal with Iblees but I bet that it's for good. He was forced to take the deal and no one knows why. His words were so poetic but not in an annoying way. "It's excruciating to be in your presence." *screaming* (view spoiler)[ When they were in his secret room and he was telling her how he's seen her for eight months in his dreams... AMAZING. He told her that she was like an angel and she was even better in person. I can't handle it. Alizeh, marry this man before I do. (hide spoiler)] Romance: This section contains majorish spoilers. Read at your own risk! So when I started this book, I was team Kamran 99%. I was thinking, "They are the two POVs. They can't not get together, right? There's absolutely no way that I'll ship her with Cyrus. (Even though I already kinda liked him.)" BUT I WAS WRONG. I am 1000000000000% Team Cyrus now. The flower scene... I. WAS. DYING. (I was also blushing so hard that I had to keep taking breaks because it felt like my head was going to explode.) I thought that the kiss scene from book 1 was the most magical thing ever. It was totally magical but the chemistry in this book is off the charts. I can't really recall a time when a second love interest was introduced and I actually switched ships. It doesn't happen. Once I commit, I'm all in. But that's how amazing Cyrus is. The banter between the two of them was amazing. When Alizeh called him beautiful, I thought that I was going to pass out. Worldbuilding:I am literally so obsessed with the world, it's insane. She keeps bringing up all of these amazing details. The imagery is so beautiful. I'm typically tempted to skip the setting descriptions but I was hanging onto every word. It is so beautiful that it's insane. The amount of creativity that went into making this is incomprehensible. Plot It was a bit slow but that's okay. It was the second book. It was to build up the third book. It's crazy to think that both of these books take place over a couple of days but they do. So they are fast-paced in that regard. For book 3: To Mrs. Mafi: Literally just keep doing what you're doing. I'm so obsessed with your writing, your characters, everything. Predictions for Book 3 (view spoiler)[ I think that the 5 people may not die but are going to be the 'sacrifices' for Alizeh to get her magic. We are going to learn the real reason why Cyrus made a deal with the devil and it's not bad. Maybe he was saving someone. We are going to see a sibling of his (maybe his father killed his sibling?). Alizeh and Cyrus should get together and rule an empire. Period. (hide spoiler)] Anyway, I just love this book. ...more

Some minor spoilers below, especially for the first book. Read at your own risk! Characters: I loved the complexity of all of these characters. It was a bit difficult to keep up with all of the characters because the cast was a bit large but it didn't really matter. I loved seeing certain relationships (no spoilers) and not all of them were romance related. Kazi I loved seeing Kazi's growth in this book. She found her place and her family. It was so cute to see. We got to see this change in her and this inner strength. She's just an amazing character overall. She was willing to do whatever it took to protect those she loves and it was great! Jase I felt like we didn't see that much of Jase in this book. He was still a great character but I felt like he needed a bit more development on his own. It was fun to see his protective side and how he interacted with different characters in this book. The Ballinger Fam I should probably stop lumping these people together but oh, well. This family was so cool. I loved seeing the different dynamics, especially later in the book. They were messy and crazy but so authentic. Wren and Synove I really want to see more of them. I felt like they were so complex and fun to see. Maybe there will be a novella or a book dedicated to each of them and their futures?? The Villains There were too many villains to keep track of. I felt like some of them needed to be consolidated. But they all gave me the creeps. Especially Zane... *shudders* Plot: I really loved all of the twists here. I loved all of the little secrets that were revealed. I was shocked several times. I also really loved the epilogue. We got so many answers and it wrapped up the duology so well. I am really glad that this wasn't a trilogy because these books encompassed everything that they needed to without going overboard, as most trilogies tend to. Overall Thoughts I also loved how clean this book was. There wasn't anything explicit romance-wise. I don't remember many curse words but I typically block those out unless there is a heavy amount. But there were either very few or none. This was one of the cleanest YA books I've read in forever. I really want another spin-off, maybe with Mason and Synove. Anyway, I'm off to read The Kiss of Deception which I should've read first and is somewhat spoiled for me ...more

But if that was a cliffhanger for a third Crows book, I better have all of the Crows(except maybe Nina, she's got other things going on) team up again or there will be blood. Also I love how Leigh's not-romance is better than pages of pages of actual romance. Also, how cool that this is my 100th book read this year! Also, it was the best I've read this year. ...more

So to preface, I've been in a bit of a book slump. Not much but enough to aggravate me. So basically, every book that I have read lately just hasn't felt good enough. But this book was amazing. I came in with HIGH expectations. I put off reading this book for a while because the cover makes it look like a middle grade novel to me. IDK why, it just does. But I loved The Shadows Between Us (which you should also read) so I decided to give this book a try. This book had a lot in common with Fable by Adrienne Young (which I also absolutely adore) and I love the red-haired strong female pirate with a secret trope. I won't say too much because a lot of this book review could easily become spoilers but I just love everything about this book. It's going on my highly coveted OTP shelf, if that tells you anything......more

I adored Six of Crows so I was a bit wary when people were comparing the two books. The first 50 pages, I have to admit, I didn't really like Fie. She was just hard to connect with. Plus the book is very dark, so it was a bit hard to understand. But then I really dug deep and enjoyed the book. When I saw the romance starting to bloom, I was upset because I thought that it was going to be forced and awkward. But it was so great at the end. ...more

I was confused during the entire book but it was a good confused. The romance was to die for. There was no insta-love. The characters were so deep. Even the side characters were well written. I was shocked by this book. I thought that I wasn't going to like it. But I was so wrong. And that ending... I'm still trying to get over it. I also was really happy with how the author handled the sensitive topics. I think that it really helped develop the book overall. I felt like those topics were hard but needed to be talked about. It developed the characters and created 'gray' villains. While some characters did hard things, they all had motives that were easy to see and understand. The writing is very poetic and beautiful. The descriptions of colors and scenes are so detailed but not boring. The worldbuilding is great. This is one of my top two books series ever and it's just amazing. I would super recommend it to serious readers. I have now read it twice and it is just as beautiful the second time. Some books, especially those that have major surprises in them, aren't as good after the first read. But not this one....more

The worldbuilding was ON POINT. I am super excited for the second book. I was shocked at the ending. I saw it coming but it still knocked me over mentally and emotionally. Review 2023: I can't believe that I read this for the first time two years ago. I remember so much of these books. This duology is one of my favorite series ever. Easily top 3. Characters: Kaz- Kaz is my favorite male character from this book. He might be awful and terrible but I love him. He's so broken but he holds himself together. He has such a sad backstory that it hurts but it made him into the crazy demon that he is. He also has the best lines. He tries to act like he doesn't care but he really loves his friends. (You can't convince me that he doesn't ship his friends together- he sends them on missions alone together. Kaz is the real Cupid here) He's such a mastermind that it blows my mind. (Even though his romance skills are TRASH) He's so dramatic and sarcastic that it makes me laugh. Inej Inej is indescribable. She is so strong. She learned how to survive. She is so silent that no one can tell that she is next to you. She was just an amazing image of silent strength. She knew what she wanted and she would go after it. (Also, I want Tante Heleen dead) She is this silent force that you can't help but love. Jesper I really liked Jesper as well. I didn't like the whole relationship thing but I liked his lines. He's pretty funny and keeps everything aloof. Wylan Wylan is super cute. I liked his scientific side and how he broke things down. He found his own strengths and grew with the Crows. I'm looking forward to his development in the next book. Nina I liked Nina but I don't love her. She's cool and very powerful but I want something more from her. Matthias He is my least favorite. He is just this soldier who is begrudgingly going along with everything. All of the characters in this book are so complex. I can't give good explanations for them. I just love them. I want to take them all far away from Ketterdam, where they can be safe. Relationships Kanej- I can't decide who I love more, Kaz or Inej. So their ship is clearly my favorite. And there's nothing anyone can do to change my mind. I just basically love everything about this series and I can't write a review that can do it justice. So just read it. You're welcome. ...more
