This is a messy review as a result of finishing this book at 3am after a long day. But wow! My mind is in absolute shambles after reading this book, and I honestly have no idea how I’m supposed to focus on anything else. I’m now convinced that everything SJM touches is gold.
First of all, I absolutely loved the level of detail to the world-building. No expenses are spared and it just pays off. She build a wonderful world that you want to explore, and that keeps you intrigued - anytime you think you know something, she pulls the rug out from under you.
Second of all, the characters! I am just a complete sucker for well written characters - give me character over plot any day (or if you’re SJM, just give both). I love when characters are so well written that you laugh with them, cry with them and get angry with them. I had genuinely missed these characters so much since HOEAB because they honestly really felt like friends - and that’s the power of well written characters.
Third of all, the plot! Just wow, honestly. I’ve not read anything like it. SJM just writes such an incredibly twisted plot that keeps you on your tippy toes. I was so intrigued, constantly wanting to know more, and making my own theories as I read (some of them right, most of them wrong). SJM just has a way of writing that gives you small clues and keeps you intrigued but still manages to take you by surprise.
Lastly, that ending! Eqwlefhlfnfa I have no words. Literally. I’m an overthinker by nature, so I tend to think in many different scenarios when I read these kinds of books (especially when I’ve been warned of a crazy ending), but my mind apparently met its limit - I did not see that one coming.
