A wizard and an all around a nice kind of guy.

I had no idea I would enjoy this book as much as I did. Butcher created an amazing character and his writing style is smooth and seamless. This book flows from one page to the next.
What really impressed me with Harry Dresden is just how much of an ordinary guy he really is, and just how much a badass he managed to be. There was no stupid posturing, cheesy one liners or testosterone driven Neanderthalism. He even made a back duster seem cool. And considering how far back this book was written just how many clichés involving a black duster there are, that is a feat and a half.
There are not many urban fantasy series out there that take their time in a way like Jim Butcher writes, there are even less involving male main characters. The plot stretches out like a warm summer's night and you still manage to stop and smell the roses on your way to the finish line. Not a single part of it seemed rushed and all the supporting characters had a lived in feel, like they've truly lived all their lives right where they were supposed to be, and we are just simply passing by at the moment being nosey. Although this is only my first book by Jim Butcher, I already know that this is a classic series, a 'don't miss'. And I don't intend to.
It's also quite refreshing to have a guy's perspective when it comes to flirting and romance. Dresden embodies a genuinely nice guy with the odds stacked against him when it comes to women. Although by his train of thought you can clearly see that he is a full blooded male, his actions speak of his insecurities and loneliness. Not many guys out there that write like this. It's like there is some bro code that requires male characters to be limited to a certain pre written book of conduct around women. The end result is always uninspired.
Bob the skull though.... He is the best supporting character I have met in the last couple years for sure. A wiseass, horndog spirit trapped in a skul whose soul purpose (soul purpose hihihi) was to accumulate information because Wizards and tech don't mix. [image]...more

A few years back I was all about the paranormal romance, and I was specific. So specific in fact that not many novels would to. I was full of it at the time and not easily satisfied. I would get a few chapters in, and if the book didn't take me, if it didn't have that something special i would discard it like yesterday's papers. Somewhere in my travels I have stumbled on Elemental Assassin and discarded it.
Now I can say I am more than happy I've tried again. Lately I keep picking up books with whiney, spineless, pathetic heroines who can't seem to get trough a single day in their life without having some kind of mental breakdown, or need help to simply breathe.
Gin was such a breath of fresh air, I loved it. The I-don't-give-a-fuck, take no nonsense kind of girl that went on with her day. Something didn't happen the way it was supposed to? Shit deal, but life moves on.
She did what needed to get done and a focused train of thought was so refreshing. She wasn't second guessing herself every second of every day. She knew who she was and what was she capable of. No vanity, no insecurity, no cattiness. I really, really, REALLY needed this.

You start a book, it seems ok, like it has potential and you are happy. Although this is a YA novel, it's targeted for mature audiences. Just because the main characters are underage doesn't mean that the story is for little kiddies. I hate it when authors try and make a mash up of Disney goes to Hell. It NEVER works.
Either you are writing a kiddie novel, or not. Choose one and stick with it, please. You can't talk about agelessness and cruelty of heart experienced by those who have been enslaved for lifetimes, then have the characters talk and think like they are thirteen.
You can't talk about sexual empowerment and jaded hearts scarred by betrayal, then introduce scenes where holding hands is awkward.
You can't try and create a believably powerful character, then stick them in bloody diapers. It makes the entire story ridiculous. ...more

You know that in any Chinese restaurant they have that one dish that is ridiculously loaded with everything that they have. You got your pork, beef, chicken, prawn and everything in between all on one plate. It makes your stomach queasy just thinking about it. Special is one word to call it. Too much is another.
Relentless is too much when it comes to world building. It started more than ok. It's about a girl that has healing powers and deals with the People – the Fey. But soon enough there were many different types of supernatural creatures kicking about. There were many fey represented, then we have vampires, werewolves and vampire hunters. After all that was introduced we got to know that the vampires are actually demons.
There were far too many paranormal aspects tossed in together without much care where they landed. We have vampires, werewolves and vampire hunters as a batch that is commonly found together. We have the fey and their many castes that are usually defined by elemental magic and if anything, commonly set against or apart of vampires. Then we have demons, as in angels and demons that imply religious beliefs and all that jazz that comes from mysticism from modern religions and Greek and Roman influences throughout time.
Less is more. I would have appreciated the novel more if the author took her time to delay all the introductions to all her supernatural supporting cast. In this way I didn't get a feeling that they are magical at all, in fact I got a feeling like they are a dime a dozen there. They seemed to pop up like mushrooms after rain. Without the necessary build-up and true background of every species I didn't enjoy it as I expected it to.
The second thing and the most annoying one is the Twilightish feel of the whole werewolf clan. The running away to spend some time with his cousin 'hunting' and not including her. The fact that she wasn't liked or supported when she came over, later the shock over the fact that she now knows about them, yadda yadda....yawn. I lost interest........more
Without reading the novel, you know how it's going to end. No fail,- same thing happens every time. One could argue that this is the way she writes her novels, and i would usually say yes, but after fourteen books? You get fed up.
Boy and girl, not from the same species, find each other. Boy wants girl. Girl openly hates, rejects, distrusts boy, while secretly dreams, needs, lusts after boy. Some stuff happens, sometimes bad and that wouldn't be forgiven in normal circumstances, but magical, uber-love that cannot be denied overrides all reason and caution.
Fantastic, mind-blowing, multi-orgasmic sex follows.
Queue some swordplay, and maybe few things blowing up.
Add some more sex....
Finish up with HEA.
I don't know about anybody else, but i would perhaps stretch out a story or divide it in a couple of installments, surprise the reader, and give it a breath o fresh air.
