I refuse to put myself in a position where the likelihood of myself being triggered is high. I don't think the "kill marks" which feature in this book are okay. My friend Cait talks more about how they these marks can be connected to self harm. I was curious about this book but after hearing several quotes which feature in the book about these marks I am physically sick and disgusted. It honestly saddens me. I wonder how such a thing passed by so many ARC readers though.

The cover itself is a representation of self harm. Something that people also need to be aware of. It is not simply a wall with gold paint.

Please proceed with caution if you choose to read this book despite the triggers present. Stay safe. As soon as you feel even slightly triggered, put the book down. Your mental health and physical well being is more important than this story. Please be careful, you're all too important.

On top of all this, there are racist stereotypes and ableist attitudes all throughout this book. Something which shouldn't be supported at all, in my opinion.

Also, to tell people their opinion about the racism, ableism and triggers which feature in this book is invalid or wrong is highly ignorant behaviour . You are allowed to enjoy this book, but stay away of the problems that do feature and stay open to others opinions, especially those who have been harmed by this novel.

For more information on the ableism, which is primarily about chronic pain because described as a gift, read Emer's review. She suffers from chronic pain and talks about her views on the topic.

Caitlin Thank you

Lör K. This book has also been proven to focus on racial stereotypes and also has some ableist tones as well. I wasn't aware of the self harm though, and I will be updating my review shortly after reading this. Thank you very much, Amber!

Jiana I love this. Thank you for shedding light on how problematic this book is.

I completely forgot about the racial sterotypes and ableist tones, I was so focused on the self harm. Obviously that's highly naive of me so I'll definitely be adding those to my review! So, thank you as well!

It's important to stay aware and support the community.

Lör K. @Amber

It's not a problem whatsoever! I didn't know if you or the people reading this comment section were aware so I just wanted to do my bit and help out! I've loved Roth since Divergent and it's so upsetting to see her do this, and then try to actually defend the racial stereotyping. I'm disgusted, and I might sell the Divergent series so I don't have them in my collection anymore.

No problem at all! I'm glad I could shed some light. I've heard the topic of chronic pain is dealt with poorly in this book, so if you're represented in a poor way I am truly sorry. Your illness is one I will never be able to truly grasp, so I will be interested to read your thoughts once done with the book!

I can understand why! I enjoyed the Divergent series as well, and I was quite excited for this book. However, I'm just so disappointed in how she's attempted to defend everything. It is quite a piss poor effort, if I do say so myself. But, you can always still enjoy Divergent! Don't let this ruin a series you loved :)

Aisha Okay, in all honesty and in my opinion, this book isn't problematic .
Veronica Roth is addressing issues that we are experiencing in our current day society. The self-harm isn't exactly promoting people to cut themselves. I think of the carving as more battle/war rituals than anything really.
I also wouldn't say that a person can be mentally triggered by this book. That's taking it to the extreme...
We have to be more open to new themes and ideas presented in novels, not just dog them down immediately without taking the story into context.
Veronica Roth is trying to present these ideas, so we should at least give her a chance.

Hmm definitely true! I might give it a reread at some point and hope I don't pick up on major issues!

I would like to just address the "I also wouldn't say that a person can be mentally triggered by this book. That's taking it to the extreme..."

As someone with a lot of mental health issues, I can be triggered very easily. Now, Carve the Mark may not trigger me, but as someone with an eating disorder, I can be triggered at the mere mention of nausea within a book. Someone may be this sensitive to the issues mentioned and described in this book. Of course, this is my opinion and I am trying to keep this civil so I fully apologise if any of this comes across as passive aggressive, that is not my intention at all.

Hi Aisha. I'm glad you enjoyed this book. However, it's important to stay aware of other people's opinions. If you don't want to believe in the self harm which is present in this book, which it is, I believe the racist stereotypes and ableist tones are also a large problem within this story.

To say that someone can't be mentally triggered by this book is highly naive as well. I'm glad that you haven't been triggered by this book nor any book it seems, but many of us have. I don't think it's taking it to the extreme.

I will also not read a book, or give it a chance, if I think my personal health is in danger.

Again, I'm glad you enjoyed this book, but it's important to recognise that there are issues present.

Caitlin @Aisha Personally, this book is triggering for me. I find the mention of kill marks up the characters "wrist to shoulder" something very triggering. I don't believe that the author is encouraging self harm in anyway but I personally feel that it is a form of glorification of it as it is considered beautiful by the characters. This is just my opinion and I completely respect yours.

No, you're right. I shouldn't have worded it that way at all. I'm just trying to say that I think a lot of hate is being thrown at this book when Veronica is just trying to address issues present in our society today.
I apologize for what I said and @Syo, I didn't really think about it the way you said.
Thank you for giving me another point of view to look at this discussion from :)

Lör K. @Aisha

It's alright! We all word things that makes them come across in a way we don't mean them sometimes! A simple mistake, nothing to be sorry about!

I do admit that she has tried to do that, but in my opinion I think she did too much too fast, and people were just thrown in at the deep end, from what I've read. She did attempt to do this well, but also, I don't think she achieved it. I think it would have been better to slowly go into it throughout the series so that people were expecting it more and also knew what to expect rather than just throwing everyone in and just sort of expecting everyone to go on with it.

Again, no need to apologise, it was your own opinion! And you are more than welcome for giving you another point of view!

I will admit she did kind of throw in too short of a rope with the carving of the marks and other issues raised, but I try to be as open minded as I can when reading and so it didn't really affect me. Now that I've spoken with you bookish friends, I've realised that it not effecting me personally doesn't mean it didn't have an effect on anyone else. And, haha, that I'm not as open minded as I thought.
Again, apologies if I offended or hurt anyone.
I personally enjoyed the book, plot, concepts, themes, ideas and the everything in between the lines. Let's just hope Veronica can take this constructive criticism and apply it in her next book which I am already looking forward to :)

message 18: by Lör (new)

Lör K. @Aisha

I wish I could be a bit more open minded when reading but things like this, especially because my boyfriend is biracial, I try not to read anything that even hints at racism and such because I like to keep any form of racism, even just very minor stereotypes. I'm quite close minded on that, but I am open to seeing other people's views on it! And that's fine! It doesn't affect you personally so until it's explained, you might not realise how it actually affects other people and that's completely okay! But you listened and you learned a little bit and that's also really great!
You did not offend or upset me at all so there's no bad blood there!

I admit I have been considering giving it a read but I'm very hesitant seeing people with some of the same issues with me being triggered by it. It's a bit of a toss up but I'm willing to at least give it a try, so thank you for explaining things a little to me and helping me be a little bit more open minded myself!

I had always heard about the racist remarks and stuff regarding this book, but then I read it wanting to see for myself. And I couldn't believe no one was talking about the whole self harm thing! That was such an unexpected turn and was seriously baffled that no one spoke about it.
