⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The amount of reading notes I’ve written down while reading this… it's overwhelming. This review is going to take me forever to write but I have to get all my thoughts and emotions out, so I guess spoiler warnings?

Before reading:

I read the description after continuously seeing it being hyped up on social media, and realized one of the main characters were Norwegian??? Uhm, I could not for the life of me not read his lines with a Norwegian accent. (If you didn’t know, I’m Norwegian and was officially shocked). I was starstruck as I’ve never even come across the type of books I enjoy where one of the main characters are Norwegian. This was so weird to me, I thought it would never happen but here we are.

Reading notes in timeline:

I was so confused when Rune called his mom and dad “Mamma” and “Pappa” while speaking English. Coincidentally, I lived in Georgia when I was 3 and called my parents mom and dad so expected he would as well. But I guess not.

Not me crying in the first chapter, that was a first. And dauym that boy do be possessive.

When he moves back, and Poppy describes his accent like heavily Norwegian- NO. I’m crying because this is so, so bad. If you don’t understand please go look up “Norwenglish”. It haunts me every day that some Norwegians actually talks like that.

The writing style was kind of weird, I don’t know how to explain it, but I got used to it anyway. The pacing of the book was honestly perfection though.

What really separates this book from other books I’ve read is that with topics of illnesses, we are usually informed from the start that the main character suffers from an illness. Therefore, you can already expect the ending and what the book is going to be about. This book on the other hand presents the topic later on, using it as a tool to flip the plot and make the story so much more different than what you expected. But you need to keep reading because you are already attached to the characters, which made this book so much more devastating.

Norwegian slander (because I can, and I want to):

*cracking knuckles in preparation…*

Some sentences are grammatically correct, but not necessarily something anyone would say- Please, have you heard of slang? No person speaks that formally unless it's a job interview or something. When he spoke Norwegian I was just cracking up and it ruined the whole mood…

The name choice I’m cryinggg- Rune Erik Kristiansen? STOP IT'’S GIVING ME MIDDLE-AGED WHITE MAN VIBES. That’s probably because I’ve had a teacher with graying hair who was white and- You get the picture. I’ve never met a person my age called Rune, that name is reserved for the older generations.

Not the Viking talk, it's like the only major thing “outsiders” know about our culture. It's literary the bare minimum.

Why does Rune have blonde hair and blue eyes?? THE FU**ING STEREOTYPE I- But I guess it's only fair because a lot of them DO be having blue eyes and blonde hair over here. And please, not the long hair- If you have that hair, you would literary get bullied. I’m imagining short hair and no stubble thanks now move along.

“Poppymin” doesn’t really mean “My Poppy” buuut… I’ll let it pass as the nickname is lowkey cute.

But not the literal description of Poppy being; She’s quirky, she’s a different breed, she’s not like other girls. We get it okay, what happened with showing not telling?

“My Norwegian bad boy” girl… sorry to break it to you but there are no bad boys hanging around here except “rånere” which I would strongly advice you to stay away from.

But all in all, I’m very happy with the whole Norwegian part because if he was Danish or Swedish, then no thanks…

After effects:

I DONT EVEN REMEMBER HOW MANY TIMES I CRIED BUT WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT IT WAS TOO MUCH

IT MATTERS NOT WHAT YOUV’E DONE BUT WHAT YOU DO WITH WHAT YOU’VE DONE FOR OTHERS-

I wasn’t even halfway through when I KNEW this book was going to kill me. I’m deceased, I’m numb, I’ve disintegrated, I’M DEAD ON THE FU**ING INSIDE!
But to the real question, how do I explain myself when I’m sitting in class bawling my eyes out over fictional characters? I’ll be expecting answers in 3-5 business days and no less thanks.

This book is the definition of heartbreak and beauty, plus fu**ing amazing!! It thought me a life lesson; appreciate the small things that you overlook in life because you never know how much time you have left.

It still gave me trust issues for life though-

Now let me rest in peace while I try to recover from dying.
