Dnfed at 28%. The writing is lovely and the main character very likeable but the book is soooo boring. I usually don’t mind a slow burn when it comes to world and character building but I didn’t have the patience for the pacing in this which seems to be predominantly about how an abandoned and abused young man copes with the responsibility and life changing effects of being thrust into court as an emperor. Lots of court politics and traditions but not enough plot line to hold my interest. I’m a little shocked to find myself dnffing my second book of the year in the same week as the first. Am I in a mood or just getting hard to please? I now have that slightly hollow feeling a reader gets when they have no idea what to read next…

Sherry Lol. I was pretty disappointed (and salty) about the other one. You might like them both. The other had a YA vibe and you know how I am with that. I think if you read expecting it to be as amazing as The Bear and the Nightingale or Spinning Silver you might be disappointed because other than a sort of very loose location there’s not a lot in common. I didn’t rate this one because I only paid a couple of bucks for it and I didn’t have a false expectation of it being any particular thing (which when the book fails to deliver I do get cranky about) I was liking it at first because the main character is a rather sweet and gentle soul thrown into an unexpected situation of being made Emperor which he finds completely overwhelming and yet has a great intuition and sense of right in coping with the various issues that spring up but the pacing was incredibly slow, the issues got to be a bore and from the reviews I read it doesn’t really improve. As it progressed I just couldn’t get engaged. Maybe you will fare better and be able to encourage me to hang in there and soldier on. Though not on the other. That one’s ass is grass as far as I’m concerned.
