My dissertation, based on my work in a community-based writing project that featured some oral history. Focus: stories. Stories from community members shared in group and individual interviews. Students write stories based on these stories. Teachers tell stories about students telling stpries about neighbor stories. I write a story about all that.

Elyse wrote: "Wow. Wonderful David!!!" Thanks! It's a pretty interesting story. And still in print! It has been used in many different departments in several universities. I'm pretty proud of it still. Sold a few thousand copies. Not bad for an English teacher. :)

Greta wrote: "Too bad. Not available over here." Well, it is more an English teacher's book. It has been used in various disciplines, like Education, English, Anthology, Psych. .. as a kind of model for research as storytelling. It looks at stories and tells a story. I can send you a copy if I can find one here and you message me yr address. But I don't know if you would be interested in the topic. Well, you wrote to me here, so maybe you are! :)
Somehow I didn’t see your answer, David, so sorry for the late response. There are two different descriptions of your book. The one on the paperback edition sounded genuinely interesting. But if it’s more an English teachers’ book, then probably it’s not for me. I would have given it a try though if there was an ebook version. Thanks for your generous offer to send me a copy! I’m afraid that would be really expensive, David. And that for someone who never agrees with you!:) You do have a big heart. And that’s a gift to me already.
It is an English teacher's book, in that it features a summer community-based oral history writing program for middle kids in Detroit in the late eighties, but it is narrative of narratives, too, and features interviews with my fellow teachers and a focus on one struggling girl writer. I don't think it's available in ebook, no.
I thought the focus of the book was more on the incident, the stereotyping and stigmatising, and the different views of the people involved.
Hi, Dave, you don't know me, but I was reading a review of yours and ended up looking at your author page. I have an account w Scribd, do you think they might have it. They seem to have a lot of material like this. I don't know how an author goes about getting their material on the site, but I noticed quite a number of random books that people uploaded as PDF ( I don't know if the term uploaded is correct) there's also sheet music & textbooks available. I'd like to check it out. It sounds intriguing to me- and my mother too - she's visiting me right now, she's a retired Jr high school English/reading/writing teacher. I'm hoping u might respond to this comment w info on how to go about purchasing this feel free to msg me if you'd rather or u can email me at [email protected]
Ugh . I just realized maybe I wasn't clear that it was this book Eating on the Street that we are interested in.
Shaelyn! Sorry for the fact I only saw this right now... I think I have an acct with Scribd, but I have no idea if Eating on the Street is there... though I'd be happy to have it there for anyone to read. I thiunk the book is out of print and as it is a university press book, it is probably not affordable on Amazon. IF I still had a digital version of it, I'd be glad to send it to anyone, but I just don't have it anymore...
