Usually my reviewing style includes a plot synopsis at the beginning, but through experience I’ve come to the realisation that it’s most often a huge advantage when the book actually has a plot.

This was essentially Interlude: the Book. No plot development, no character development, no setting development, no... development. At all. And you don't need to tell me it gets worse. I know.

The chapters written from the viewpoint of the main protagonists are downright boring. Quite the opposite is true for the chapters written from the viewpoint of minor characters, like the Forsaken, the Seanchan and the Black Ajah. But unfortunately, there are so depressingly few of them.

Then we have people being stupid, other people being incomprehensibly stupid, the development of what has the potential to be the worst love plot in fantasy, and Faile being Faile (that’s the worst part).

And the only real redeeming quality of the book is called Cadsuane Melaidhrin.

The only reason this doesn't get two stars is because it's a Wheel of Time book and it allows me to spend more time in this wonderful world. But if I were to be objective, it's definitely closer to two stars than three.

At least I read most of the book in less than twenty-four hours. That must count for something. Though the book was only 672 pages, which is barely even a novella by Robert Jordan’s standards.

Fortunately, I still love the series a lot more than when I was reading the first three books. And this changes nothing.

Quotes Markus Liked

Robert Jordan
“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose above the great mountainous island of Tremalking. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”
Robert Jordan, The Path of Daggers

Lee The disappointment wheel fell off that wagon a few books before this one for me.

Twerking To Beethoven I only read the first book in the series, and that was quite a few years ago. I'm told it gets way better when Sanderson gets the gig.

A shame. It's definitely one of the best fantasy series ever written.

Actually, the improvement starts with Jordan's last book. At least that's what I've heard 683 times.

Lilyan Make that 684 times :P. It will get worse though before it gets better. Book 10 is just... AUUGHHHH

Lee It's definitely one of the best fantasy series ever written.

I don't think it can live up to that at all. You could probably condense those first 8 books into about 3 or 4 and then you'd have a case of it being a pretty good story. Of course, that's in my opinion :)

I found the story tediously long, drawn out and the characters banal. Don't even get me starting on the most powerful women in the world sitting around tugging braids, comparing dresses with flushed breasts.

Pretty sure I've heard that quite a lot more than 684 times :P

In your opinion, yes. And that's okay. But it still is, based on any estimate but the personal opinion of those who disagree.

Tomas Wheel of Time - one of best fantasy series ever written. Agreed. It has its down sides but still overall it is amazing piece of fantasy.

Markus John wrote: ""Only 672 pages..." Jesus. That's epic in most other people's standards."

Indeed. But since the last four were all around 1000 pages, this one was rather short :P

My thoughts exactly.

Richard How did you manage that in about 24hrs? You're a reading machine!

Nice review, you never know too. Those 684 people saying things get worse could be complete bozos and you may be in for a fun time…

Thanks, Richard. I only read 400 pages or so in that time. But I could definitely have read the whole thing. Hah, hopefully they are!

Markus John wrote: "I'm lucky if I manage 30 pages in 24 hours!"

Well, we all read at different paces.

Tomas What is your trick? DO you read in "normal" way only faster or do you use some kind of speed reading? I'm "normal" reader and I don't remember if I ever read more than 100 pages in a day. I never had more than couple hours for reading, though.

Lilly i only read before going to sleep so usually a book will take me a month to finish. It all depends on lifestyle and reading speed i guess but i like to take my tkme reading. I find it also hwlps me remember more about the books i read in the past

David I have some of the same opinions about this series
I wonder why I find myself returning to it sometimes. I do though so I guess that stands for somthing.
