Everything changed in this book.

In my Neverseen review, I compared that book to Prisoner of Azkaban in the Harry Potter series, in an attempt to explain the darker turn the series had started to take. Well... if that was the case then, then we've jumped straight to Order of the Phoenix with this one. We've reached a point where there's just... no turning back now. Everything has changed, and the aftershocks are going to be felt for a long time. We're technically still a middle grade series, sure, but, I mean... are we? Because my poor little broken heart has something to say about that.

I'm not saying that this is in any way graphic or anything like that, but the content has just gotten so much more serious and heavy. We've hit the point of a (view spoiler) and even though I've barely started the next book, I can already tell it's going to have a fundamental impact on Sophie (and her friends, of course, but mostly Sophie).

But that's not the only hard subject matter that this book tackles - we also see assassination attempts, betrayals (or do we?), prison breaks, and so much more. This whole book just felt so emotional from cover to cover. It's straight up 700 pages of emotional conflict on a far deeper level than the previous books have had. Again, not saying that kids can't handle this sort of stuff, but if the last 10% or so of this book had me crying, I can only imagine how much harder it would hit on younger readers. Prepare them with tissues and a quick talk about knowing when to put a book down if it gets to be too much and talking to you about how it makes them feel, that's all.

Anyway... I could probably ramble on in a whole essay about how fantastic this book and this series is, but I feel like I've done that in the last 4 reviews already. All I can do is continue to say that this series surprises me more and more with every book with just how amazing it is. I can only insist that people not sleep on this series and not overlook it because of its middle grade classification. I can only say that it truly is one of my new all-time favorite series (to the point that, even though I had originally bought them all on my kindle, I now have bought gorgeous hardback copies because a) I needed them in my life and b) they'll make great protection if anyone ever breaks into my house because good heavens, they are actual bricks at this point). I'm so invested in this series, and I'm genuinely incredibly excited to see where this magical journey takes me.
